October 2006 - Rhubarb and Alison Watson visit Venice

I told Rhubarb that superstitious Venetians will not pass through the Gateway to Venice, marked by the columns of St Mark and St Theodore because it marks the spot where many criminals were executed. Rhubarb passed through fearlessly but soon began to wonder if he had made the right decision when he was nearly wiped out by a passing pigeon!

From the top of the Basilica, Rhubarb admires the view of St Mark’s Square.

From Ponte della Paglia, Rhubarb wonders why the Bridge of Sighs is so small, so I tell him about the prisoners who sighed when passing over the bridge and taking their last look at the beautiful city of Venice before being locked away.

Rhubarb is amazed by the Rialto Bridge, which is over 400 years old, spans 48 metres and houses two rows of shops.

Rhubarb admires the view of the Grand Canal. He doesn’t want to leave Venice as there is still so much to explore.

But all good things come to an end and so Rhubarb watches from the plane window as Venice disappears into the distance. How blue the sky looks at 30,000 feet!
