June 2007 - The 4 seasons of gardening - Season 3 - Summer
Look at all these bedding plants that have to be planted
out in tubs, baskets and the garden. A lot of work, I think. |
First, the big pot. This needs a plant saucer to hold any
excess water during the summer months. |
Then I have filled it with potting compost and vermiculite,
which also helps retain water. |
Then, Hey Presto, filled with lovely flowers which will grow
and fill the entire pot. |
Next this rabbit basket. To stop water running straight through,
a plant saucer is used as before. |
Now
look at it. This Scaevola will be a mass of trailing flowers
when I come back in August – hopefully!. |
Now for the allotment. Hope you noticed my nice green wellies
this time. |
Wow! Look
at the size of these now. Clem and Arthur will be very pleased,
as you can see…. |
A little extra before supper! |
Look at these lovely purple flowers on the French beans.
I wonder if the bean will be purple. |
A week later, and look they are green. I wonder
if anyone would notice if I had a nibble. Gardening is hard work. |
Look
at these broad beans that I planted last time. I wonder if
the flowers have a scent. No, but look at the size of the pods…… |
I wonder if rabbits like eating them. |
Punch drunk on carrot tops! |
Look
what I have found in the lettuce patch! Someone missed weeding
this. Good job! I love groundsel.…… |
This
has seeded from next door’s allotment.
And look at it in a week’s time……… |
What a picture! Even though it is right in the
middle of the leek bed. |
Finally, I need to transfer these cucumbers into
the bed in the greenhouse. |
Then these Marigolds that I sowed last time are to
be used as companion plants. These will attract the hoverflies,
and they will eat all the nasty aphids. |
