Good Morning Graham, I was surfing the
internet last evening looking for old haunts of my youth, when I came across
the Staines Boat Club website. In my distant past! I rowed for Staines Boat
Club in the days just after the fire when we were trying very hard to stay
afloat as a club (no pun intended). I would be interested to learn if any
of the old members are still members of the club, the last one I knew of
as being a member is Brian Griffin. That was some years ago. Also
members during my time were Dickey Heart, Derek Holden. Mike Smith
to mention a few our coach during this time was Mr Russell Bates. I
believe that George Smith and his wife did attended to most of
the day to day running of the club. I would imagine that George and his
wife together with Russell Bates have long passed on. However if any of
the old members are still members, I would like to know as I will likely
be in England starting in February of 2006 and would like to be able to
get back to see some of the competitive rowing later on in the year. I
have not been back to England for many years as my home in British Columbia.
However I am pleased to see that the club is going along very
well, and would like to visit it if and when I return for a any reason.
As a matter of interest, I was a member of the eight that made rowing history
with all the dead heats in the final of the Junior eights many years ago. I
cannot even remember the regatta, but believe it was Twickenham ad I believe
that we had either two or three dead heats in the final before we were
beaten. The crew comprised of: John Newey, Dickey Heart, Mike Smith (stroke),
Bobby Briggs (bow), Derek Holden, (possibly Bob McIntyre), and myself (#2),
the other names slip my mind at this moment, although I can clearly
see their faces. Please update the regatta dates as soon as possible on
your web site so that people like me can be advised. Please convey my best
wishes for the success of the club and the oarsmen and women who now row
there and carry the torch. Regards, David M White.

Have
lots of happy memories, and a whole bunch of B&W photos
from that era. Does anyone recall we came about 70th in the
head of the river in 59? Photos still clear.
Now bowl with an old rower of that time locally.
Can anyone recall the rowing club that had a piano tossed from
its upstairs balcony about that time. I reckon it was at Twickenham,
and my friend Hugh Lewis reckons it was Molesey. We both took
place in that incident but the actual club is a bit hazy!!!!!!!!!
My brother was a bit keen to set fire to the evidence, but our
coach at that time got him to put the can of petrol away.

Well
after some 23 years involved in rowing Staines still has a special
place in my heart. Am currently finishing off my season as head
womens coach at Thames. In the last three years (since a back
injury forced me to give up) I have coached at Home Countries
and Commonwealth regattas and picked up a couple of Womens Henley
medals. It was seeing Mark Donnison up here that got me off my
arse, I coxed Mark in a coxed pair in 1983. I would be interetsed
in catching up with him and other people from that era again.
Smithy and Ted are the people who I owe most to at Staines. Good
luck for the future to everyone at SBC... |

Hi
a touch of nostalgia led me to write on here, so many names and
faces and some still alive. Been thinking about Staines BC a lot
these past few years and now thinking about getting back in a
boat. Is Roger Pailes still alive? I pulled him to many wins.
Still good friends with Rob Dauncey. Since I left rowing I've
been Sprint Kayaking and coaching at 2 clubs to International
standard, visiting many places that I visited when I rowed for
Staines and the pull is getting stronger. Now married again with
a daughter, time is getting on. So if I don't do it now I may
be too old. May see you soon. All the best to you all. |

Jo. Where have you all gone? No photos of you lot on the wall

I
joined Staines BC in 1977 as a way of keeping myself out of the
pub in the evenings, but somehow ended up in a four. We were better
in the bar than on the water, but we went to some great regattas.
Once we went to France (Chalon-sur-Marne?), where on the first
evening the host club laid on a colossal party. At 8:30 the next
morning we had the world's worst race draw - the oppo were internationals,
we were novices with hangovers! I remember Janet Wilkinson calling
for half pressure after about a minute - we must have been a long
way ahead...(photo from Dragon Boat race - August 2001) |

15 years - 3 boys - 14, 12, 8 years old. Didn't row for about
15 years, then was talked into getting in a boat again for a 'gentle'
row with other 'ex'rowers!! Laid up for 2 weeks! Would be good
to have a reunion with anyone from the past. Loads of people you'd
remember are still active in the club, (some do still row and
have won a fair few pots in the last 2/3 years). Do get in touch
and we'll organise something. |

| Seminal rowing moment: New Year's
Day, 1980something. Sub zero temperatures. Mother of all hangovers.
Turned up for training despite all this. Ordered to do 'extra'
10 mins work. Mutiny. Sadistic coach with camper van asks: "Caroline
are you interested in winning a gold medal, or getting
drunk and getting off with boys?' Didn't realise the two were
mutually exclusive. Gave up rowing shortly after and went to art
college. Dara, Anja, Sam - how's tricks? |
