Walton Small Boats Head 4th December 2004 Rob Oades reports on the junior entrants ----- The Juniors raced four doubles today at the Walton Small Boats Head. Rebecca Corless and Rachel Edwards came 6th in the WJ16 2x category, clocking a time of 13.00. Rob Oades and Nick Pollen came 3rd in the MJ15 2x event in a time of 11.24. Charlotte Morrison and Emma Parks came 2nd in the WJ15 2x - missing the pot by 4 seconds (12.24). But the junior result of the day goes to the MJ12 crew of Andrew Frost and Thomas Oades who came 1st in an impressive time of 13.24, over 30 seconds ahead of the second placed crew. This time would have also won the MJ13 catagory. Well done to all crew's and thanks to Ted, Smiffy, Jeremy, Bob the Dog and all supporting parents.
Ian Grant adds the following regarding the men's squad ----- Some good racing results from Walton on Saturday from the some of the mens squad. In the Novice sculls, Ian G 8th/37 in 11:53, Max S 14th/37 in 12:01, Mark AW 23rd/37 in 12:12 and Fikret O finished 26th/37 in 12:17. At S4 Helge finished 12/13 12:24. Phil AW finished 3/3 in 13:18 at MVE and 3/3 in 13:29 in MVD. In the coxless Pairs Dean C/Terry M finished 4/8 in 11:33 and Nick H/Dom S finished 8/8 in 13:00 at MS4. At MS2 Nick H/Robin D finished 26/29 in 11:44. In the double sculls Steve B/Ian G finished 2/16 in 10:47 at MN, Tom G/Helge N finished 6/9 in 11:06, Robb W/Julian B finished 8/10 in 11:43. Veteran's Head of the River Fours 7th November 2004 Clare Wood reports ----- The results are finally up! Vet D 4- Roland, Richard, Mike and Andy W Finished 45th in a time of 22:28 (5th of 10). They had a good strong row, and Andy steered them well down the course! They were a bit disappointed at having to drop to light pressure at one point as they got caught in a bottle neck. Vet B 4+ Alan, Andy M, Andy S and James coxed by Clare finished 46th in a time of 22:30 (4th of 7). They also had a good steady row but thought they lacked there usual ‘spark’. Overall a good day – Well done everyone

Weybridge Silver Sculls 16th October 2004 Rob Oades reports ----- The Junior Squad acquitted themselves well at this weekends Weybridge Silver Sculls. All crews were very competitive against strong opposition. Charlotte Morrison competing at J15 1x was the only single sculler competing for the Juniors, coming 5th out of 13 in a time of 18:49. All other crews were double sculls. Rachel Edwards and Rebecca Corless came 3rd out of 5 in a time of 17:18 in the WJ16 2x. Jenny Goldswain and Emma Corless did very well also coming 3rd in their WJ 14 2x category (out of 13) in a time of 17:33. In the men's racing, James Kell and Russell Vinson came 7th out of 7 in the difficult Junior Maiden Category in a time of 16:04. Rob Oades and Nick Pollen came 5th out of 23 in the large J15 2x field. Their time was 15:29. But the result of the day goes too Tom Oades and Andrew Frost who came 2nd out of 7, rowing a year up in the J13 2x event. Their time was a very good 18:43 considering it was their first long distance event. Well done to all crews and thanks to Ted, Smiffy, Roy, Jeremy and many parents for their support on the day.
Liz Bernard adds this report for SWPS ----- Sir William Perkins's entered 6 crews; all of whom made a tremendous effort, but I think some crews hadn't realized just how far they had to row! However, we had some very competitive performances for our first Head Race of the season. Ingrid and Heather were 8/13 in the WJ14 2x, with Bethan and Emma coming 2nd in the same event, in a time of 17:10. They were certainly the star performers of the doubles, beating the times of x6 WJ15 crews and x3 WJ16 crews! Emily and Lucie in the WJ15 2x were 7/9. Charlotte was our only WJ14 single, who gave a very spirited row in her first head race in a scull, coming 6/7. Sarah-Jane and Rachel both entered the WJ15 1x event and unfortunately clashed with each other twice on the way down the course. Sarah-Jane was placed 7/13, in a time of 19:11, and Rachel 2nd, in a time of 18:32. This time was faster than all the WJ16's and faster than 2 of the 3 WJ singles. A great performance. We are now looking forward to racing at Pangbourne Junior Sculls in November.
Ian Grant reports on the mens squad's performance ----- There were 9 boats entered from the senior men and all up against some tough competition. Robin D and Stuart S went off in a S3 double, but word of their entry must have got out as they didn't have any opposition. In the singles, many people found the course tricky to steer, Stuart S and Mark A-W finished 6th (15:50) and 8th (16:06) out of 10 in the S3 category, In the S4 group, Robin D, Helge N and Paul S finished 19th (16:03), 24th (16:53), and 25th (18:06), with Robin suffering a small collision with a returning single on the other side of the river. In the Novice category, Ian G and Fikret O (in his first every race in a single) finished 8th (15:37) and 25th (17:19). Finally Phil A-W, in the Vet E group finished 3rd in a time of 18:07. Some good racing experiences had by all in the first head race of the season and I would just like to say better luck next time to Stuart and Robin, I hear they're a bit annoyed.

Boston Marathon 19th September 2004 Ali Lake reports ----- The Boston Marathon took place yesterday and we had 2 entries; Phil Ansley-Watson in a Scull and the infamous Octuple. The Octuple managed to pull themselves 31miles / 50KM from Lincoln to Boston in 4 hrs and 20 minutes and Phil managed a heroic 4hrs and 38 minutes. The Octuple as many of you know was collecting money for two very good causes, The Macmillan Trust and Staines Boat Club. We managed to raise a total of £1,500, that means £750 for SBC and £750 for Macmillan. We would like to thank everyone who sponsored us and let you know that now is the time to hand over that money!! Please pass on your sponsorship to anyone of the Boston Girls. Our Acknowledgements sounds like an Oscar speech but is very necessary! We would like to add a few very special thanks to all the people who made the Boston Marathon Possible. They are, in no particular order, Jackie Hawkins (who raised an impressive £121.00 at the Pubs & Clubs Regatta by handing round the Boston Marathon Bucket!), Steve Ballantine, Sarah Sweeney and the SWPS team for the use of their equipment, BA for the use of their equipment, Chris Plastow and all the various subs we borrowed through the training period. We would also like to extend extra special thanks to Mike Piper who organised the mini bus, ferried us around on the day and offered his support along the course, Bob Slade who invested much of his time in coaching us, our 'Super Subs' Gayle and Sally who drove all the way to Boston to support us and finally Eugene Broderick of Blaze Construction who loaned us the minibus, installed a tow bar and paid for the petrol - a huge thank you to him. Splash and Dash Regatta 18th September 2004 Liz Bernard and Rob Oades report ----- Staines Juniors, SWPS, Men's Vet crew, parents and families had a great day out at Swindon Splash and Dash Regatta held at Coate Water Country Park, Swindon. Despite the very windy conditions in the morning, and then a downpour, all crews put up a very good performance. Six gold medals were won by the Staines Juniors in great style to bring the seasons victory total to 38. The first victory of the day came in the J15 1x with Rob Oades an easy winner. This was soon followed by Emma Corless and Jenny Goldswain in the WJ13 2x. A third straight victory was denied by a canvas as Rebecca Corless and Steve Brett came second in the Mixed Junior 2x. However, this was soon followed by victory in the WJ15 2x by Charlotte Morrison and Emma Parkes, beating the two SWPS crews in the process. The J12 1x final saw all three Staines crews, Tom Oades, Andrew Frost and Michael Lusty, through to the final. Victory went to Tom Oades, his first single sculls victory. Andrew Frost did not have long to wait for a gold medal as he then teamed up with Emma Corless to win the Mixed J13 2x. James Kell came a close second in his J14 1x final. The final victory of the day, came in the final race of the Regatta when the "Love Boat" of Rob Oades and Rachel Edwards won the Mixed J16 2x, again in an all Staines final against Charlotte Morrison and James Kell and Nick Pollen and Emma Parks. All the mixed crews did fantastically well, having only had one practise outing each. We must not forget the brave performance of Jeremy Pollen and his son Nick in the Fam 2x event. They reached the semi-final, but Nick could no longer pull his dad along. The St John's Ambulance staff were not needed for Jeremy thank goodness. Thanks again to all Mum's and Dad's for their support and to the coach's Peter Smith, Ted Dyos and Jeremy Pollen. Thanks also to SWPS parents for help with the boats and with towing. The Juniors had the honour today of rowing with the Veterans Squad. Three victories were gained here. The Vet D coxed four started things off with a victory followed by Carol Goldswain in the Womens Vet Novice 1x. Carol then teamed up with a rather surprised Sarah Sweeney to win the Womens Vet Novice 2x. The victory went to Staines despite Sarah having to borrow a Molesey all in one !! All in all a fantastic days racing. Thanks goodness for a rest - but oh no - not the heads !!!!!!! Rob Oades (a very tired parent). Liz adds ---- The SWPS crews had some good heat wins and some very near misses in the finals, but the gold medal winners of the day were the WJ14 4x+. The crew consisted of Emma Townshend, Bethan Roberts, Charlotte Jackson, Ingrid Barnsley and coxed by Heather Stevenson. The Vet Junior Mxd Quad rowed extremely well especially considering that the very first stroke they had ever taken together as a crew, was the one off the start!! Sara Sweeney and Carol Goldswain won gold in the WVET NV 2x, despite taking the scenic route on the way down the course! An excellent day's racing and well done to all the crews. Cambridge Autumn Regatta 12th September 2004 Rob Oades reports ----- Today saw the excellent form shown by the Junior Squad at Evesham last weekend, continue at the Cambridge Autumn Regatta. Six finals were contested with 3 pots won (unusual all glass tankards). Rob Oades (J15 1x) gained the first victory of the day, bringing the total Junior wins for the season to 30. This was the target set by the Squad at the beginning of the season and is a fantastic achievement. More pots were gained by Charlotte Morrison in the WJ15 1x and by Jenny Goldswain and Emma Corless in the J13 2x. Total for the season so far therefore is 32. It could, with a little luck, have been six out of six. Rachel Edwards and Rebecca Corless lost the J15 2x final by a canvas and Thomas Oades was level in his J12 1x final when a loose slider brought an end to his chances. The unluckiest pair were Rob Oades and Nick Pollen in the J15 2x final. They were leading by half a length and pulling away when the race had to be stopped because of a cruiser ignoring all calls not to enter the racing course. The re-run saw Rob and Nick piped to the post by the Tideway Scullers pair by half a length. Many thanks again to all parents for fantastic support and to Peter Smith, Ted Dyos and Jeremy Pollen for their hard work during the day. Roll on the Splash and Dash Regatta next week. Evesham Regattas 4-5th September 2004 Rob Oades emails ----- What a glorious week-end of weather was enjoyed by the Junior Squad at the Evesham Regatta (4th September - 1000m course) and the following days Evesham Sprint Regatta (500m). The glories did not stop with the weather as the squad won eight pots over the two days. Over the 1000m course on the Saturday 7 finals were contested resulting in five victories - Jenny Goldswain and Emma Corless in the WJ14 2x, Rob Oades in the J15 1x and Steve Brett in the J18 1x. These were followed by wins in the WJ15 1x by Charlotte Morrison and in the WJ16 2x by Rachel Edwards & Becky Corless. Finals were also contested in the J14 1x by James Kell and Emma Parks and Charlotte Morrison in the J15 2x.
Could this fantastic success be repeated over the Sprint course on the Sunday? Not quite. Nine finals were reached, with 3 victories for Emma Parks in the WJ15 1x, Emma PArks and Charlotte Morrison in the WJ15 2x and Tom Oades and Andrew Frost in the J12 2x.
There could easily have been 3 more wins close defeats in the J15 2x Final (Rob Oades and James Kell - 3 foot), WY 14 2x Final (Jenny Goldswain and Emma Corless - 2 foot) and the WJ16 2x Final (Becky Corless & Rachel Edwards - 2 foot). Andrew Frost was also a losing finalist in the J12 1x and Russel Vinson in the S4 1x sculls. So a great weekend of racing brings the seasons total victories for the Junior squad to 29. Many thanks to Ted Dyos, Peter Smith and Jeramy Pollen for there hard work over the weekend. Also thanks to all the Junior parents for their great support and help. We certainly were a noisy bunch on the riverside.
In recognition of Staines Boat Clubs Ted Dyos and Peter Smith's support for the Evesham Regatta over many, many (and in Ted's case many) years, both coaches were given Honorary Life Membership of Evesham Rowing Club. These were presented to Ted and Peter before the main trophy presentations on the Sunday evening. What a great way to finish a great weekend. Rob Oades. Full results here.

World Masters Regatta - Hamburg 2-5th September 2004 The Staines Veteran D Four returned from the World Masters Regatta in Hamburg this afternoon. Murray Litvak writes ----- The veteran boat beat a star studded field including ex Olympians and strokemen from both Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race crews but missed out on a gold medal by finishing second to the German crew from Bernburger Ruderclub by 1.8 seconds. The rest of the field included crews from the USA, France and Great Britain but the German and Staines crews were the only ones in contention. Rating 44 off the start, the Staines crew pulled back half a length from the Germans who had taken an early lead. At one point Staines were down by one foot and and with 250 metres to go it was a close duel between the two crews. With the rating never below 38 the crew of Paul Goldswain, Paul Hopkins, John Lusty, Graham Carey and coxswain, Murray Litvak fought hard to the end. So the record is Belgium 2000 a 4th place, Prague 2002 3rd and now Hamburg 2nd then Glasgow 2005, maybe - just maybe!!! Full results are available here. Also see Photographs Page.

Oxford City Royal and Sprint Regattas 21st-22nd August 2004 Luc Wilson writes ----- Oxford City took place this weekend with several Staines crews competing and such was the confidence that one member was heard to say, "If our eight entries win we could win the Victor Ludorum again" Confidence is an awful thing. As the majority of the top men and women's squads were missing it was left to the Sprint squad to do their best over the extra long distance. The day started promisingly enough with a first round win for Ian Grant in his novice sculls over last years finalist Philiby of Reading RC. Things soon took a dive with every other crew failing to progress over the challenging 1000m course. There were however some encouraging signs with the MS2- of Adam Gill and Mark Rolt coming within one foot of beating a very strong City Of Oxford crew who had reached quarter final level at Henley this year in the fours. The Men's Novice four also made their debut but were somewhat hampered by an 82kg Cox and first race nerves losing by under a length to a very strong crew. Other crews competing on Saturday included Women's S4 Coxed four (sorry didn't catch your race), Helge in sculls, Nick and myself in S2 pairs and some vet competition. Sorry to any others competing. It can however be said that the majority of the Staines contingent was in the pub by 1.30pm.
Sunday started with raging hangovers for many of the Staines boys and girls, this did not however stop the Men's S4 coxed four (Nick, Julian, Tom and Dave) from taking some notable scalps early in the day allowing them to progress to the semi finals of a hugely subscribed event. The other men's racing occurring was a men's S3 eight. This consisted of (from bow to stern Dave Dimes, Tom B, Ian Grant (changed sides) Julian B, Nick H, Dom S, Adam G, Luc W. Cox Leanne J. Considering that we had only a few outings to prepare the performance was good. In the semi final we faced University College, Dublin. Just the mention of these giants of rowing was enough to put us off, however after spotting several of these students in the bar it became clear that it was actually an alumni crew and many had done little rowing for a few years. The Staines crew started well and then settled well at 40 pulling ahead at around the 250m mark to put us a length clear at the finish post. Next up was Wallingford in the final. Alas we were unable to repeat our previous performance and lost to a very professional crew by around a length and a half. Although there were no victories this year I'm sure a good time was had by all. Thanks must also go to the "Staines roar" on both days, which was very encouraging and lifted our racing crews time and again. Please keep it up it makes a tremendous difference. Luc Perhaps someone else would like to comment on the vets and women's racing crews, I know the vet four raced twice on Sunday with Adrian Tollet also racing in a scull, as well as a women's four on Sunday. Apologies for any I have missed out.

Katy Burke and Diane Gill send their report from Oxford ----- The Women's S4 crew on Saturday consisted of Dom Foley (cox), Katy Burke, Anna Behrendt, Bonny Howes and Jackie Hawkins. In the first round they were drawn against Reading. Despite having a clean start and a good row the Reading crew proved to be very strong, pulling away from us gradually down the course. The final verdict was win for Reading by approx. 2 lengths. With subs being drafted in from Kent and Birmingham for the second day of racing, the Women's S4 crew on Sunday consisted of Caroline Gill (cox), Di Gill, Anna Behrendt, Bonny Howes and Jackie Hawkins. With a bye through the first round, the crew gave a good account of themselves in the semi final against Barnes Bridge Ladies, but lack of practice together saw them about two lengths down by the finish. One suspects that the late night disco dancing might also have had something to do with it! On the bank, spectators were kept amused on an extremely busy stretch of river with suspiciously few marshals and lots of near misses. The bend seemed to catch a lot of crews out and there was an impressive collision between a women's eight and a launch (which was tied to the bank at the time). At one point racing stopped to allow a bow girl to rescue a dog that had gone for a quick dip between races. Those about to race didn't miss out, as even the start tent ended up in the river. Despite the lack of pots, a fun weekend was had by all.

David Dimes adds his report ----- "The Staines Men's squad managed to send a somewhat depleted squad to race at Oxford at the weekend. Saturday saw racing over a 1000m which discouraged the "Sprint Squad" from entering in force but saw some small boat entries from the more adventurous Senior squad members and a Novice 4+ entry The Pair of Mark and Adam were unlucky not to progress beyond the first round after 'running foul of the twisty course' while Luc and Nick suffered a similar experience while losing to the eventual winners. The scullers (Helge and Ian) and Novice four had mixed fortunes and early exits so Staines were out of luck and rowers by early afternoon. On the plus side the racing squad (and supporters) were all able to pace themselves nicely for the evenings entertainment which saw the squad enjoying the City of Oxford hospitality (beer and cheesy disco) and a red hot Dutch floorshow from some Continental friends! Just ask Beefy, Smiler, Tank, Pieman, Numpty or Cheeky Boy for details!..... Sunday saw large hangovers but slightly more success (build that into your training plans Robin!) The 500m course held greater appeal and we managed to enter a couple of bigger boats. The S4 4+ of Julian, Nick, Dom and Dave rowed well together (despite race 1 being their first outing as a crew) winning through a couple of early rounds until coming unstuck in the semis to Hertford. The S3 8+ (Luc, Adam, Nick, Julian, Dom, Ian, Tom B and Dave) won through to the final but lost out narrowly to a strong Wallingford crew. A big thankyou must go to Leanne for agreeing to Cox and she steered brilliantly throughout the day after a minor "bush interface" in an early (winning) round."

Maidenhead Regatta 7th August 2004 Steve Tassell sends this report from Maidenhead Regatta ----- Staines Ladies carried on their purple patch at Maidenhead today winning Senior 3 eights. The crew consisted of Dom Foley (cox), Katy Burke, Sarah Tassell, Jules Reichel, Suzanne Reng, Alison Rolt, Lucy Duncombe, Dianne Gill and Jackie Hawkins. In the first round we came up against Putney Town. With a confident start we were up to a half length lead by the end of our stride. This was further increased as the rating dropped to 34 crossing the line 1½ lengths up. In the final we raced Sons of The Thames. Again gaining a lead off the start the ladies stayed in front all the way to the line crossing a length up in the end. This was the only ladies crew racing this weekend due to Maidenhead not giving ‘Winner from Previous regatta’ slots so unfortunately due to the wins at Henley T&V last weekend we couldn’t race the other combinations we had entered due to their status change. Rumour has it though with the combined successes of the men and juniors we managed to pick up the Victor Ludorum for the most successful club! Well done everyone.
Ian Grant sends this report on behalf of the men's squad ----- Helge N, Mark S, Ian G and Terry all lost out in their singles in some tough racing. The S3 4+ of Luc W, Nick H, Dom S, Dave D and coxed by Penny won their final comfortably. The S1 8 just lost to Marlow in the final after being neck and neck all the way down the course. The S3 8 had a rematch against Putney Town in the first round, but putney suffered steering problems after 10 strokes causing both eights to come together resulting in Putney's disqualification. The final, at 19:30 against the home team Maidenhead, was another close race with both crews level all the way but unfortunately Maidenhead came through to win it by a 1/4 of a length. The S3 8, although disapointed, were pleased to find out that they were only 2 seconds off the time of the S1 8. I can also report that Staines won the 'Victor Ludorum' for the most successful visiting club and received a prize of £250.
Rob Oades emails his report on behalf of the juniors ----- The Junior squad had 3 wins at the Maidenhead Regatta, helping Staines win the Victor Ludorum Cup. These were Jenny Goldswain in the WJ13 1x, Becky Corless and Lisa in the WJ16 2x (Becky rowing 2 years above her age) and Rob Oades and Nick Pollen in the J14 2x. Congratulations to all. Henley Town and Vistors Regatta 31st July 2004 Steve Tassell sends this report ----- Our second trip to Henley this year proved just as successful as the first but the quality of racing and the improvement made by so many individuals in the squad was what was so impressive to see. We entered two crews on the women's side. First up was the Senior 2 4+ which raced Thames, the crew consisting of Dom Foley (cox), Jules Reichel, Jen Page, Sarah Fudge and Sarah Tassell. Staines went off strong from the start gaining an early canvas lead. They then settled into a strong 34 and pulled out a 1/4 length lead. Thames then put in a big push to come back to level, Staines duly responded by putting in their own push gaining a 1/4 length lead again. From here they never looked back winning by 3/4 length at the finish. Impressive stuff this was their second outing together yet they rowed like they'd been together for months! The final was drawn against Eton Excelsior. Staines took a half length lead off the start and sat a length and a half up all the way down. Eton put in a push at the end to come back to 3/4 length but Staines remained calm to take the win. In the Senior 3 eights we had Dom Foley (cox), Katy Burke, Jen Page, Jules Reichel, Sarah Fudge, Cath Burke, Suzanne Reng, Dianne Gill and Sarah Tassell. We were drawn against HSBC in the first round and again the form from the four carried through to the eight gaining a strong start and getting half a length up by the 150m mark. This lead gradually built to 1 1/2 lengths in the end. The race itself was a bit nervy so we had to work on this for the final against Vesta. Vesta were employing a similar amount of mixing up of squads, whereby they had three Henley medal winners from their Senior eight the rest of the crew were made up from their senior and novice squads. Staines got off the start slightly up but Vesta were quick to respond pushing through to a canvas lead. Staines impressively took the rate down to row back through Vesta to gain back a canvas lead. From here they gradually lengthened out rowing powerfully to the finish. With Vesta never sitting more than half a length down this was impressive rowing under pressure. Staines hung on to a very well deserved win. There were three novices in the crew, Katy Burke, Cath Burke and Dianne Gill as this was a qualifying event this was their novice pot and what a way to win it! It's also worth noting that Suzanne Reng, Jules Reichel and Sarah Tassell who were also novices at the start of the season are now Senior 3 rowers and have notched up some 6 wins! Well done everyone! Burway Veteran and Junior Regatta 25th July 2004 Burway Veteran and Junior Regatta took place today with some fine wins for Staines and Sir William Perkins's School crews.
Rob sends this report on behalf of the Staines Juniors----- "After the successes of the junior boys at the Staines Regatta on Saturday (3 pots), it was the turn of the girls to bring back the silverware the following day at the Burway Junior and Veterans Regatta. Another glorious day saw Staines competing in 9 events against some of the top junior squads in the country. The squad were very competitive and reached the semi-finals in 8 events and 4 finals. Losing semi-finalists were Rob Oades (J14 1x), James Kell (J13 1x), Andrew Frost (MxdJ11 1x) and Becky Corless (WJ14 1x). Rob Oades and James Kell, rowing together for the first time in a regatta, reached the final of the J14 2x event but lost to a fresher Walton crew. Charlotte Morrison and Emma Parks lost the WJ14 2x final by a canvas !! However Charlotte had already given the squad their first victory of the day, winning the WJ14 1x. The second pot of the day was won by Emma Corless and Jenny Goldswain in the Mxd J12 2x. In typical Emma C fashion she kept the Staines supporters on tenter-hooks by catching a crab with them well in the lead. A quite brilliant recovery ensured the pot was not lost ! The highlight of the day saw Jeremy Pollen and his son Nick compete in the Vet/J14 2x. Jeremy knew nothing of this until the draw was published (a stitch-up organised by Ted Dyos as a pay-back for Jeremy's leg pulling over Ted's "when I was in the war" stories). Despite the creaking joints Jeremy survived the race (losing to the eventual winners) and he did not require oxygen from the St John's Ambulance Brigade. A pint in the club bar seemed to help the recovery. Jenny and her mum Carol also competed in this event".
Liz Bernard sends this report on behalf of Sir William Perkins's School ----- We had some excellent heat wins (5 in all plus two finals) with some friendly rivalry between SWPS and SBC. Charlotte Jackson, in WJ13 1x got through to the semi-final. Bethan Roberts and Charlotte Jackson got a bye to the final of the WJ13 2x, both sculled well, but unfortunately Bethan's seat came off the runners which she managed to fit back on during the race! Sarah-Jane Gregory in the WJ14 1x just won her first heat against Emma Parkes( SWPS student and SBC member) and Rachel Martin in the same event got through to the final and had a very close race against Charlotte Morrison (SBC), just losing to Charlotte. The WJ14 4x+, a scratch crew with two J13's in it, consisting of Nell Bond, Bethan Roberts, Ingrid Barnsley, and Emily Robinson and coxed by Tommi Breslin, beat both Marlow crews to win the event. Rachel Martin met Charlotte Morrison again in the final of the WJ14 2x which was very closely fought race, Rachel partnered Nell Bond, and Charlotte, Emma Parkes, the SWPS crew gaining victory this time.

Staines Amateur Regatta 24th July 2004 Staines Regatta took place today in warm and sunny weather. Adam Gill has just released the official results. They show wins for Staines crews in the following events - Mens Senior III Eights - Womens Senior II Coxed Fours - Mens Veteran B/C Coxed Fours - Mens Novice Double Sculls - Mens Junior 14 Double Sculls - Mens Senior IV Sculls - Mens Junior 16 Sculls and Mens Junior 14 Sculls. Everyone agrees that it was a most successful day.
Steve Tassell sends this report ----- The Women had a mixed bag at Staines regatta. On the face of it some great racing from all crews showing real form. The Novice ‘A’ four of Dom Foley (cox), Katy Burke, Lucy Duncombe, Dianne Gill and Anna Behrendt had a great start to the campaign in their first round against Reading, they won by some 2 lengths by producing some of the best racing I’ve seen from the novice squad this season. In the next round they continued this form gaining half a length lead over Guildford off the start. Unfortunately soon after one of the crew came off her seat causing the crew to stutter for a few strokes. They got things back together only to cross the line a foot down. The ‘B’ novice four of Caroline Gill (cox), Cath Burke. Helen Williams, Bonny Howes and Jackie Hawkins gave a good account of themselves against Eton Excelsior, however, their lack of practice together saw them finish a canvas down by the finish. The Senior 2 four of Dom Foley (cox), Jules Reichel, Jen Page, Alison Rolt and Sarah Tassell got off to a shaky start when slight equipment failure hampered their cause, however they pulled it together to beat Putney Town by 2/3 length. They then met Thames in the final which wasn’t quite as close in the end due to Thames catching a crab near the start, however, a win’s a win and well deserved! Last up Caroline Gill and Hazel Hawkins competed in their first regatta in Novice Double Sculls racing a classy Eton Excelsior crew. Caroline and Hazel have been out only a handful of times in a double and put in a solid performance for their first race. National Rowing Championships 16-18th July 2004 News just in from the National Rowing Championships is that the WJ14 2x of Charlotte Morrison and Emma Parks came 5th in their final in a time of 8:46.90 and the OJ 2x crew of Tom Goldswain and Steve Brett raced came 6th in their semi final in a time of 7:51.33 so did not qualify for the final. Steve Brett sends this report ----- The WJ14 2x, consisting of Emma Parkes and Charlotte Morrison did very well in their Friday eliminator, coming in second to Maidstone Invicta and not allowing Runcorn to overtake them. This ensured them a place in the final on Sunday. Tom Goldswain and I both felt that we had a very good race in our OJ 2x eliminator, even though we did come 4th out of 4. We were up against some very good, strong crews. This put us into the Repechage on Saturday, where we came 3rd out of 4, beating a crew from the Merchant Tailor's School. From this we managed to qualify for the Semi-Finals on Sunday, where we came 6th out of 6th. In the girls' final they stayed 2nd for a long part of the race, but eventually finished 5th. Molesey Amateur Regatta 17-18th July 2004 Sunday 18th July (Juniors) Rob Oades sends this report from today's Molesey Regatta. ----- A fine days racing was had by the Staines Junior Squad today at the Molesey Junior Regatta. Eight events were entered and two semi-finals and three finals achieved. Becky Corless and Rachel Edwards lost very close races in the first round, both in their single scull (WJ14) races and when they doubled up in the WJ 14 2X. Nick Pollen in J14 1x, who also doubled up with Rob Oades in the J14 2x, also met the same fate as did Andrew Frost and Thomas Oades in the J12 2x. James Kell reached the semi-final of the J13 1x and Jenny Goldswain reached the same stage of the WJ12 1x. In the final of the WJ12 2x Jenny Goldswain and Emma Corless were narrowly beaten and the distance of 6 inches deprived Emma a victory in the WJ12 1x final - well rowed. The highlight of the day was Rob Oades victory in the J14 1x event. Victories in 3 hard fought races gave Robert his second pot of the season. Again well done to all the Junior rowers and thanks too to all the parents who came along to help and support the squad. Particular thanks go to coach Ted Dyos and Jeremy (tow-man) Pollen.

The WJ13 4x+ after a spirited row just lost in the final (This was Bethan and Emma's 7th race of the day!!). Bethan Roberts and Emma Townshend sculled well, winning the final of the WJ13 2x, and Sarah-Jane Gregory won the WJ14 1x, her first win in her single scull. The WJ14 4x+, a scratch crew of Rachel Martin, Lucie Bishop, Daisy Corfield, and Ruth Blessed (who stepped in at the last minute) and coxed by Tommi Breslin, put up a good fight against Molesey A in the semi-final. A big thank you goes to the parents who enhanced the rowing successes of the day by providing a superb barbeque.
Saturday 17th July (Seniors and Veterans) Steve Tassell sends this report from Saturday's Molesey Regatta ----- We had three boats entered for the women’s squad at Molesey and again some great racing across the board! First up was Lucy Duncombe in Senior 3 sculls beating Rachel Twentyman of Vesta in her first round (some of you may remember Rachel had a spell at Staines last year). Lucy went on to lose her next race in what was a close fort battle. Next up Senior 3 eights against Cambridge University. Similar to last weekend at Bedford over half the crew were novice but were using this and the next few regattas to pick up valuable race experience. Staines got a good start but Cambridge got away even quicker to lead by a half length, we then came back to level just as Cambridge pushed on again a pattern that continued all the way down the course. In the end Cambridge won by 1 length a good verdict given the little race experience in the crew. Finally the novice four. We had an unfortunate and abrupt end to our campaign at Bedford when the rudder was ripped off the boat so we were looking to better this result! With half the crew changed from Bedford the line up was Dom Foley (cox), Katy Burke, Anna Behrendt, Dianne Gill and Jackie Hawkins. In the first round they beat Hertford College Oxford by 11/4 lengths, in the semi final beat Barnes Bridge Ladies in what was the second fastest time of the day, the then long awaited final saw us up against Mortlake Anglian & Alpha. Unfortunately Mortlake proved too strong on the day to clock a time faster than the Senior 4 final raced just before but a great effort from the novices and some valuable experience which will set them in good stead for the next few regattas. Bedford Quarts Sprint Regatta 11th July 2004 Steve Tassell writes ----- “Some great racing was had at Bedford this weekend with the Women’s squad putting out three crews. The novice four consisting of Dom Foley (cox), Katy Burke, Helen Williams, Bonny Howes and Jackie Hawkins got off to a great start in their first round beating St.Neots by 4 lengths. Unfortunately though in the next round against Norwich RC the rudder was ripped off on the start pontoon as the four pulled away leaving them with no steering…even more frustrating as despite having no steering they were a good 11/2 up after 100m before they inevitably steered off the course. The S3 eight faired much better despite half the crew having not regularly raced in the eight this season and most still being novice. The crew of Dom Foley (cox), Katy Burke, Sarah Tassell, Jules Reichel, Alison Rolt, Cath Burke, Helen Williams, Jane Hudson and Jackie Hawkins had a row over in the first round, beat Peterborough City by half a length in the semi-final and narrowly lost out to City of Cambridge in the final the official verdict being 1 foot. Lastly the pair of Jen Page and Alison Rolt –who you may recall raced at Henley this year in lightweight pairs- made up for this disappointment by winning S2-. They never really looked troubled in any of their races winning by comfortable margins and starting to really move the boat well together. Well done to everyone for a great weekend of racing”. Kingston Amateur Regatta 10th July 2004 Ian Grant sends this report from the weekend's racing at Kingston Regatta ----- It was a disappointing and frustrating regatta for the members of the mens squad who travelled to Kingston. Stuart Simms lost out in his S3+ Single scull semi final in the morning. In the afternoon, the S2 4- of Mark Rolt, Max Somper, Mark Cashen and Fikret Ozer, had a straight 3 boat final when expecting a semi-final against Walton. At halfway, on the bend, Cygnet RC squeezed the four onto one of large, more solid metal buoys. They tried to recover but Cygnet RC came into them straight after, causing the race to be stopped. The umpire then decided to award Walton the win instead of a re-row which the crew were willing to do. The S1 8 of the 4- crew, Stuart Simms, Mike Owen, Ian Grant and Helge Neumeister were due to race in the evening in a striaght 3 boat final against Vesta and Kingston, which had the prospects of being a very close and agressive race. But after much debating it was decided to pull out for safety reasons as some marker bouys had moved, narrowing the course at the halfway point, and the race officials were not to keen to delay the race timetable to move some of the buoys. Henley Veteran Regatta 9-10th July 2004 - Saturday 10th July 2004 Great news from today'sracing at Henley Veteran Regatta. I am pleased to report that the D4+ comprising of Bow-Paul Goldswain, 2-Paul Hopkins, 3-John Lusty, Stroke-Graham Carey and Coxswain-Murray Litvak were victorious in their event and took home well deserved gold medals. They won their semi final against Abingdon RC by 1/2 length, again rowing through from 1/2 length behind and then faced the very tidy Dart/ Totnes crew in the final. After a great start the Staines crew had a canvas lead after the first minute and gradually pulled away to finish 1 1/2 lengths clear. This is the second Henley Vets medal for this crew after they won the Vet C4+ title in 2002. The coxless pair of Roland Wood and Ian Harris also raced today in their first race of the regatta since the crew from Abingdon RC withdrew from the first heat. They drew the pair of ex Olympian Martin Cross (also the coach of the Oxford crew in 'The Other Boat Race') and Ian McNuff a lightweight World medallist in the 1980's. They nevertheless gave their all and finished only a couple of lengths down.

Friday 9th July 2004Here are Friday's Henley Veterans Regatta results ----- This morning the C4+ lost to Bradford-on-Avon by 1 1/4 lengths in a good race shortened slightly by the loss of the stakeboats. Apparently the umpires launch succeeded in entangling the anchor lines around it's propellor! During the afternoon the D4+ were beaten off the start in their first race and were 3/4 length down by 250 metres. They had a powerful mid section and rowed through the Derby RC crew to win by 2/3 length. The race times tomorrow are C2- Semi final - 1.25pm, Final - 5.32pm and the D4+ Semi final - 8.28am, Final - 2.36pm. Full results will be available soon on the official website. Henley Royal Regatta 30th June - 4th July 2004 Staines and London 'A' raced this morning (Wednesday) in the preliminary heats of the Thames Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. London 'A' won by 3 3/4 lengths. Times were Barrier - 2.00, Fawley - 3.22, Finish - 7.11 ----- Full results are available on the official website here.

Egham Regatta 27th June 2004 Egham Regatta took place today in at first sunny then rainy conditions. David Dimes writes ----- With the men's Henley squad focusing on qualifying , the "domestic " squad decided to spend the weekend getting some race practice ..... the novice crew of Tom Blackman, Nick Hadwen and Dave Dimes coxed by Penny Grey were bolstered by our "ringer" Luc Wilson, whose points forced us to enter at S3. We enjoyed a morning start and the best of the weather! In the semis Staines gained clear water over Weybridge at the start and were able to hold the lead through to the finish. In the final Staines managed another flier off the start against a strong Walbrook crew. However, the experience and technique of the Walbrook crew showed as they came back strongly over the second half of the course, Staines narrowly edging them out by a "bow ball" as one spectator described it. Congratulations to the whole crew, for most their maiden qualifying win.
Nick Hadwen adds ----- Well we did it ! At last we have our Novice point -gained at S34+ Hurrah. After a tremendous start where we hammered them to gain a length we hung against them coming back through to win by a bow ball!
Terry Moore also emails ------ They've done it! That's Dave Dimes, Tom Blackman and Nick Hadwen stroked by Luc Wilson - they have WON their Novice pots, but not at novice; they set a target of S3. After beating Weybridge in the Semi all looked set for a show down with Walbrook. They had a good start and with good steering they had over a length by half way, Walbrook were not going to take it laying down and put a push in and gained on every stroke. Luc was already at 38spm and took it up to a massive 39spm and held on. With a Penny aiming straight for the line there was nothing in it as they crossed the line. A nervous wait then took place with a good call from the finish tent for Staines Verdict "A bow ball" in a time of 2.02. Well done to Penny and the boys.
Liz Bernard reports on behalf of Sir William Perkins's School ----- SWPS entered 5 crews in Egham Regatta today, three crews getting through to the finals. Emma Townshend, Heather Stevenson, Rachel Lovibond, Ingrid Barnsley and coxed by Charlotte Jackson won their first heat in WJ13 4x+, but lost in the semi-final. Vikki Wardle in the WJ 14 1x won two heats and the semi-final, but lost in the final. Charlotte Jackson in WJ 13 1x won her first heat and the semi-final but lost in the final to Tideway Scullers. Ingrid Barnsley and Charlotte Jackson got through to the semi-finals of WJ13 2x, and Bethan Roberts and Emma Townshend also competing in the WJ13 2x won the event.
Rob Oades sends this report about the Staines juniors ----- "The Egham Regatta saw the Staines Junior Squad out in force for a long days racing. Dressed in their new "On the Pull" T-shirts (thanks go to Bob and Smiffy for these) they were entered for nine events. The story was of "so near and yet so far" with four crews reaching finals and two reaching semi-finals, but with no pots returned. Still contesting four finals from nine events was still a great achievement against strong opposition. For the boys, Thomas Oades and Andrew Frost reached the J12 2x final. Rob Oades and Nick Pollen (in there first Regatta racing as a double) reached the final of the J14 2X. Russell Vinson reached the semi-final of the SIV 1x. On the girls side, Jenny Godlswain reached the final of the WJ12 1x and Jenny partnered by Emma Corless reached the WJ12 2x. Rebecca Corless and Rachel Edwards also reached the semi-final of the WJ14 2x. Ted and Smiffy were very pleased with these efforts and look forward to the next Regatta at Molesey. From a personal point of view this was my second Egham Regatta and the improvement I have seen in all members of the Junior Squad since last year has been fantastic, a credit to the coaches and Staines Boat Club." Reading Town Regatta 26th June 2004 David Dimes writes ----- The novice crew of Dom South (Sat), Nick Hadwen and Dave Dimes coxed by Penny Grey were bolstered by our "ringer" Luc Wilson, whose points forced us to enter at S3. Saturday saw some competitive racing at Reading Town Regatta where 3-lane events were held on a stretch of river narrower than our own at Staines. Staines fell foul of this in their first round becoming the "meat in the sandwich" between Milton Keynes and Salford Uni. The clashing was enough for the umpire to award a re-row where the Staines crew were edged out by Salford. Full results here.

Marlow Amateur Regatta 19th June 2004 Liz Bernard reports from Marlow Regatta ----- SWPS entered 2 quads in the WJ14 4x+. Both crews rowed well in rough conditions over the 2000m course. The quad consisting of Nell Bond, Vikki Wardle, Sarah-Jane Gregory, Rachel Martin and coxed by Daisy Corfield gained 2nd place, being beaten by Maidenhead. The other quad consisting of Emma Townshend, Sarah Daley, Lucie Bishop, Bianca Stewart and coxed by Tommi Breslin, came in 6th. Full results will be available shortly here. Henley Women's Regatta 18-20th June 2004 Steve Tassell reports on Henley Women's Regatta ----- Staines had mixed fortunes at Women’s Henley this year entering two crews an eight and lightweight pair. First the eight. In recent years the regatta has come under stiff criticism that despite it’s growth to three days the general standard of rowing has not been akin to what you would expect from such a prestigious event. The organising committee took a bold but necessary decision this year by amalgamating the ‘Club’ and ‘University’ events for eights and fours effectively reducing the number of middle order crews rowing at Henley. The result was 57 crews going for 32 places with no crews automatically pre-qualifying. Unlike men’s Henley the first round effectively runs as a processional race with the fastest 32 crews racing the next round later the same day. For those regular readers of the news section you will know that we started the year with a big intake of novices, from this squad we picked an eight. Given the qualification criteria for Intermediate Eights is a maximum of 20 points you can get anything from novice through to senior 2 racing in this event. The plan with the novices this year was to go along for the experience and hopefully provide people a sense of the big occasion and maybe enough of an incentive to come back next year! In order to qualify a novice crew in such an event it was going to need the row of their lives and that’s exactly what we got. Going through the start platforms the crew looked calm and composed belying the 9 months of rowing most have done. Staines set off fast and attacking clocking 43 as they crossed the line. Under Dom Foley’s expert eye the crew settled to their race rhythm at a steady 37 and there they stayed right through to the end clocking 5:03 on the way some 20 seconds faster than anything they’d done in practice. Whether they had qualified for the next round or not this had been the row we hoped we see and then some! Then the agonising wait. As with men’s Henley the results are read out in alphabetical order, however, the wait proved fruitful with Staines qualifying. Win or lose in the next round we’d achieved our objective of qualifying for the event proper beating on the way such names as Vesta, Imperial College, Kings College, Southampton Uni all crews that on paper had more boat speed and race experience but bizarrely on the day it seems not good enough to even qualify. And so to the second round race against Nottingham BC. Staines rowed with passion and determination to close on a 3 length verdict, a fine row given the performance to qualify two hours previous. I think all Staines members can be proud of what the novice squad have achieved for the club already this season we now have a core squad that will serve Staines BC very well for many years to come I hope. Given that a majority of the squad have come from Pubs and Clubs last year I’ll be watching with interest for this years new intake! Now for the pair. The lightweight pair did not fair so well, in almost an exact replay of last years row in lwt coxless fours the pair were unfortunate to find themselves clashing with Auriol Kensington whilst rowing past the island. Getting off the start in a pair at Henley has got to be one of the hardest courses to steer and it is only a small consolation for Alison Rolt who steered that I think she was very courageous to even take this on particularly as she has only been rowing a year herself. They showed -to possibly the event favourites- that they can match their start speed so we remain hopeful for the Nationals in a month’s time. For the novice squad now the main objective set at the start of the season was to win novice pots an achievement that will be the icing on what has been a very successful first season for everyone involved. It just remains for me to say a big ‘thank you!’ to all those who have supported the girls this far, you are all very understanding people! Full results are available on the official website. National Veterans Championships 13th June 2004 I am delighted to report that the Vet D4+ won silver medals yesterday at the ARA National Veteran Championships at Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham. The four comprised of Bow-Paul Goldswain, 2-Paul Hopkins, 3-John Lusty, Stroke-Graham Carey and Coxswain-Tom Goldswain. The crew suffered some disruption leading up to and during the event with the short notice withdrawal of thier normal coxswain, Murray Litvak, due to family commitments and a partially working coxbox depriving them of rating readings. Tom kindly stepped into the coxes seat despite his 'senior oarsmen' status and physique! In the semi final and fastest heat of the day, the Staines crew led from the start, beating the best of the rest of the field, Nottingham & Union, in the 6 lane race by 2 seconds. In the final, Staines took a commanding lead off the start, rating at 42 and had a 1/2 length lead by the 250 metre mark. They increased their lead to 3/4 length by 500 metres and maintained it at 750 metres still rating at 39. Staines fast rating and pace started to take its toll at 900 metres with presure coming from Nottingham & Union and the giants rowing for Tideway Scullers. The Staines four fought to the last against the best crews in the country and finished only 0.67 seconds behind the talented Tideway Scullers crew in a photo finish. This result represents a just reward for the Vet D4+ for all the hard work they have put into their training over the preceding months. Reading Amateur Regattas 12-13th June 2004 Steve Tassell sends this report from Saturday's Reading Amateur Regatta ----- Staines Ladies continued their good form from the Walton/Weybridge weekend with a hard fought heat win in Senior 3 eights at Reading today. The crew consisted of Dom Foley (cox), Sarah Tassell, Katy Burke, Suzanne Reng, Julia Reichel, Helen Williams, Jane Hudson, Anna Behrendt and Bonny Howes. They had a bye to the quarter-final where they raced Kingston RC. They didn’t have the best of starts trailing Kingston by a length after only 300m, however the girls then settled into their race rhythm and stroke by stroke rowed back through to win by ½ length. In the semi-final they raced Thames and although the outcome of a 3L loss perhaps was not so surprising, the intelligent and gutsy row was great to see and a great result considering they were racing two leagues above their status. The girls have now decamped to Henley RC as their next race will be at Women’s Henley this Friday at 10am in the first round of Intermediate Eights. We also have Alison Rolt and Jenny Page competing in LWT 2- on the Saturday at 16:14. On behalf of the rest of the club I would like to wish both crews the best of luck this weekend and good racing!

The mens squad pitched up on mass at Reading with entries in S28+, S38+, S24+, S44+, N4+ on both days. A frustrating day was had by pretty much all the men on the Saturday producing rather tentative rows. The senior 8's Henley campaign continued with a frustrating start, catching our 7 man Fikret's blade under a buoy 2 strokes off the start, the rest of the race was gutsy but not enough to beat Pangbourne school, who went on to the final. The S3's/Novices showed some excellent commitment and blade work in their races gaining good experience.

This was an altogether better day. The S38+ doubled up in the S28+ as well so SBC had an A and B crew entry for the S28+ (unheard of from SBC!!). Stroked by Terry Moore they produced a fine row and came off the water buzzing having been beaten by only a length in the S2 event. They had a good S3 race as well but lacked a little fitness in the end straight, something for them to focus on and remember when in the gym in Jan/Feb!!! Julian's S24+ had an altogether better row losing out to Reading Uni. But look well placed for the Henley qualifiers - fingers crossed. The senior 8 doubled up in S1 and S2 events. They had a huge start - finally nailing what they had been practicing all week, inching away from Sons of the Thames in the S1 race to become eventual winners of this event. In the S2 event they met the boys from Kent College USA, they were of the XXL breed but again a huge start from SBC put us in contention all the way down the course. Kent put a push in at 750 SBC responded but it wasn't quite enough, in the final 500m Kent increased their lead to a verdict of 1length 3.18 time (dist 1100m). So we picked up a medal in S1 eights surely placing us in the minds of the Henley stewards for pre-qualification status. Ever improving performances by this eight kept up the momentum for the next week before HRR - thanks go to Michael Owen who stepped into Sixpk's seat at the last minute.Full results will be available on the Regatta website shortly.

Marlow Town Regatta 12th June 2004 Liz Bernard of Sir William Perkins's School reports from todays Marlow Town Regatta ----- Four members of SWPS rowing squad attended Marlow Town Regatta on Saturday 12th June. Bethan Roberts and Charlotte Jackson put up a good fight in their first ever race together, WJ13 2x,being beaten by Tideway Scullers. Sarah-Jane Gregory and Vikki Wardle got through two heats in the WJ14 2x, only to be beaten in the final by a short distance by Tideway Scullers. Both Sarah-Jane and Vikki won their singles heat, WJ14 1x, and met each other in the final. Both sculled a superb race,with Vikki gaining her first win in a single scull. Weybridge Ladies Regatta 6th June 2004 Weybridge Ladies Regatta took place today in warm and mostly sunny conditions. Liz Bernard reports that Sir William Perkins's School had a great day and some good heat wins including the J14 quad losing one of their races by 2 feet! Winners medals went the very stylish pair of Bethan Roberts and Emma Townshend in the J13 doubles event. Roger Pailes advises that there was also a win for the Staines Novice four that he coxed comprising of Bow - Claire Sellick, 2 - Ali lake, 3 - Sally Biggs and Stroke - Claire Lovelady. Roger also coxed the WS4 eight that was disqualified in their race against Thames RC for bad steering!!! Steve Tassell adds --- The four comprising of Julia Reichel, Suzanne Reng, Jane Hudson, Sarah Tassell and Dom Foley continued it’s winning ways, racing in S4 4+ due to winning their novice pot at Walton on Saturday. They beat Guildford Rowing Club in the first round by 2 1/2L, Eton Excelsior by 2 3/4L and Thames in the final by 2 1/2L. Also racing was a novice four comprising of Katy Burke, Lucy Duncombe, Bonny Howes, Jacky Hawkins and Dom Foley which narrowly missed out in a 1/2L verdict to Staines ‘C’ who then went on to win the event in confident fashion. The ‘A’ and ‘B’ fours came together to race in WS48 against Thames who proved to strong on the day but still only lost by 1 3/4L in a spirited row. It’s been a great weekends racing for the novice women’s squad with some really excellent wins across the board, very well done to everyone with special thanks to Dom Foley for doing an outstanding job coxing both days. The junior section also had a fine day with Jenny Goldswain and Emma Corless of the Staines Junior Squad winning the WJ12 2x. Full results are available on the regatta website. Walton Regatta 5th June 2004 Walton Regatta took place today with some fine racing by Staines crews. A win for the WNov4+ (Staines A) after beating Eton Excelsior in the first heat, Staines (C) in the second heat and Quintin in the final by 2 1/2 lengths. Also winning were the WS3 eight (Staines B) who beat Staines A in a straight final by 3 lengths. In the Nov 1x event, young Russel Vinson had a great win by beating Craig Twaddle in the first heat then beating Beckett (Tideway Scullers School) in the final by 1 length. This was an exceptional race as Russel was 2 lengths down at one stage and won the race in the last 250 metres. Finally the Vet C 4+ (Vet D 4+ with Ian Mchugh subbing for John Lusty hence rowing VetC) beat Reading in their final by 1 3/4 lengths. Full results are available here. Also see Photographs Page.

Monmouth Sprint & Monmouth Regattas 29/30th May 2004 Rob Oades reports on the weekend's racing at Monmouth Sprint and Monmouth Regattas ----- Staines Boat Club Junior Squad had another successful weekend racing at the Monmouth Regatta held this weekend. On the Saturday (750m sprint!) we had three pots - Jenny Goldswain in the WJ12 1X and Charlotte Morrison in the WJ14 1x. Charlotte then partnered Emma Corless to victory in the WJ14 2x.
The Sunday saw another 3 pots added to the Staines Boat Club trophy cabinet (races now 1500m). Steve Brett in the J16 1x and Emma Parks in the WJ14 1x (by one foot). Charlotte Morrison and Rachel Edwards then won the WJ14 2x final by 1.5 lengths against the second Staines pair of the two Emma's (Corless and Parks). Well done to all crews - all members of the squad raced at least one final this weekend. Particular congratulations to Emma Corless who was racing up two years (J12 to J14). These 6 wins bring the Juniors winning haul to 10 so far this season.
Finally Ted and Smiffy would like to thank all the parents who accompanied the sqaud for their help and support throughout the weekend. I would also like to thank everyone for making my birthday celebrations (twenty one again) so much fun on the Saturday evening.
Graham Carey adds ----- The Vet D four also raced this weekend electing to race in the younger Vet C category (non handicapped) due to no opposition in their event. They won the first two rounds but lost in the final to last year's National Champions and Henley Vet winners, Hereford RC. Results will be available shortly on the Monmouth website. Metropolitan Regatta 29/30th May 2004 Adam Gill reports ----- The Metropolitan Regatta at Dorney Lake is a big measure for crews gunning for Henley this year, and all the usual big names were there battling it out. This of course made anything Staines wanted to achieve even harder, especially when there were some heats where you had to come in the top 2 out of 6 just to get into a semi-final! Here a summary by crew:
The Senior 2 Coxed four from SBC's top eight had a tough round to start off with, having to do battle with the likes of Leander, UL and Thames. Nevertheless, they gave it a good blast being first out of the blocks and finding themselves in the lead early on....but disaster struck then their 2 man lost his seat (presumably through excitement) which unfortunately left them with an even bigger job to do, but couldn't pull off a place in the final.
The Senior 2 Coxed four newly promoted from Senior 3 after last weekend's win at Twickenham also had a tall order to come in top 2 as well, but the competition again proved too tough.
The Senior 3 eight also had a big disadvantage, that being stern four had to jump out of the above fours race run round with blades to the eight already on the water and waiting for them, then row half pressure/firm to the top, then race. Unfortunately, the fatigue did show and even with super sub Roland Wood in for Chris P didn't manage to get through a round. Special interest of mine was my brother in Senior 1 singles (Newcastle University) who had a good row qualifying for the final easily...in fact so easily the last 250m were spent chatting to the Mr Hopkirk from Molesey BC..this led to a cry from Steve 6pk..'Stop chatting and start rowing'.
Next up was the Women's Senior 3 eight, rowing two status' above their status of novice. The task was made even harder by having the eventual winners in their heat, but they battled hard and finished just 1 1/4 lengths behind the pack. Looking across the times from the other heats this crew was competitive at this standard, definitely a good result!
Another crew rowing out of status was the Senior 3 coxed four, and they put in another spirited performance battling with Thames Tradesmen but unfortunately lost out; this suited sub Terry just fine - he had to be at a wedding in the afternoon!!
Yet another crew who were understandably nervous at the sight of the competition was the Women's Senior 1 pair; again out of status, AND rowing in heavyweight competition but being lightweights. Having only had a few outings together they had a comfortable row to qualify for the final; the final itself they produced another good row beating the A crew from University of London.
Back to the men, the Senior 2 coxless four had a decent race, but they admitted themselves they didn't row their best; I believe secretly some of them may have been thinking about their next race, the big one, that being the Senior 2 eight.
The Senior 2 eight showed the rest of the club how to race at the Met, giving all spectators a thrilling race; they surprised themselves by finding themselves leading their heat with 500m to go, even after a shocking start. The guys held on to qualify for the final by finishing third - just. In their final they again surprised themselves by finding themselves 3rd with 500m to go. Unfortunately they couldn't find that extra gear in the last 500m to follow it through but a spirited row nevertheless!
Attentions now turn to Walton/Weybridge next week, especially now the London Docklands originally scheduled for next weekend has been cancelled due to insufficient entries. The full results have now been published here.

Twickenham Regatta 22nd May 2004 Adam Gill sends this extremely comprehensive report from yesterday's Twickenham Regatta ----- So after the disappointment of the Evesham weekend being cancelled earlier in the month, a large contingent of SBC members trotted downriver to Twickenham Regatta on a chilly but sunny Saturday. The course was a punishing 1250m, on a long left-hand curve with a stagger to compensate for the inside lane advantage that prompted many discussions as to whether it was enough; the result was that the racing was close providing many exciting races. Here's a summary by squad.

Juniors (6 entries) There were a total of six junior entries: Russell Vinson in MN1x lost out in a very close race in his first round at the bright and breezy hour of 8am; Rob Oades annihilated his opposition to win J14 singles, and showed everyone how to cross the finish line in a single, by waving to the crowd; the girls always had a pot coming there way as they made up all of the competition in WJ14 singles - however it was Charlotte Morrison who prevailed. Total Pot haul - 2 pots.

Women (4 entries) The girls also had an early start, kicking off with the novice VIIIs at 830am; unfortunately they also fell victim to the curve of the course, losing by 2/3 length to Kings College, although the eventual winners were heard complimenting Staines' technical exercises. One of the two Novice fours entered successfully got through a couple of rounds to the final of the novice fours, but again had to do all the hard work round the outside of the bend and held on until the very end with Twickenham winning by 2 lengths. The S4 VIII lost in the first round to the eventual winners.

Men (7 entries) In a last minute decision, the whole of the senior men's squad decided to race at Twickenham swelling the Staines entry to 21 crews. The men's novice 4 lost in their first round to the eventual winners of the event from TwRC; the men's s4 four beat Cygnet (2L), then Haileybury College (easily), but then lost out in the final by 3 1/2L. The s2 VIII never really hit a rhythm and were knocked out in the first round by Wadham College. Stuart Simms showed the s3 singles competition how to scull winning two races by a 5 length and an easily verdict to take the s3 1x pot. Putney Town, after the new found camaraderie with Staines from the previous training weekend needed a sub for their s4 VIII; Dom South from the novice four stepped up to aid them to victory over Wadham. This was Putney Town's first eights win in three years, oddly enough since Staines in 2001.... The men's s3 four had a very close race against Kings College in the final, coming though to win by 1/2L. The s2 coxed four comprised of the ergo kings from the senior men's squad and were up against the mighty of Thames who had entered 3 fours in this one event alone - they really wanted this one; Staines spoilt the party by beating Thames B in the final by 2/3 length having been a length down, a victory made even sweeter as one Thames member was overhead saying 'this should be easy' as they attached to the stakeboats! The result prompted an approach from the Thames coach to the SBC men's coach Gideon wanting to know what are training programme was to pull such as result out. The s2 coxless four had a just as an eventful afternoon by beating Thames (again!) to get to the final against TwRC which initially saw Twickenham disqualified due to poor steering. SBC spoke up saying they didn't want to win it like that, and requested a re-row which was granted, going on to win in another thrilling race. These three fours all raced their finals consecutively in the late afternoon and by winning them all led to interesting spontaneous rant from the commentator singing the praises of SBC and our Ozi captain, Steve. Total pot haul - 4.

Vets (4 entries) The Vet C IV unfortunately lost out to Thames in the first round, but then doubled into a Vet C VIII to provide two thrilling races, beating Twickenham in the first round by less than a length but then losing out to a very accomplished Marlow in the final by 1 1/2 lengths. The Vet D IV seemed to scare most of their opposition into submission by firstly winning their first round by an easily verdict, then the rest of the opposition scratched; this crew was the fastest four of the morning of the regatta, including senior men fours. Total haul - 1 pot. The total wins for the day were 7, plus the Putney Town helping hand and lots more sunburn all round! ----- Full results are available on the Twickenham RC website. Poplar Spring Regatta 9th May 2004 Liz Bernard reports about Poplar Spring Regatta which took place today in which the W J14 2x of Sarah-Jane Gregory and Vikki Wardle competed for Sir William Perkins's School. They came second beating some very good crews. The results of the final are as follows ---- 1st 4.01.12 Maidstone Invicta RC, --- 2nd 4.05.66 Sir William Perkin's School, --- 3rd 4.11.45 Lady Eleanor Holles, --- 4th 4.12.13 Henley RC 'A', --- 5th 4.22.73 Dame Alice Harpur School, --- 6th 4.23.89 Surbiton High School. Avon County Junior Regatta 8th May 2004 Avon County Junior Regatta, organised by Avon County RC at Coate Water Country Park near Swindon, took place today with some great racing. Rob Oades sends this report on the Staines' juniors success ----- The Staines Junior Squad had a great start to the season at the Avon County Junior Regatta held on Saturday 8th May. The disappointment of the cancelled Evesham Regatta was forgotten as all the squad performed well and returned with seven medal winners. Steve Brett won gold in the J16 1x event as did Thomas Oades and Andrew Frost in the J12 2x. This was a special result as they were rowing up a year. Russell Vinson won Silver in the Novice 1x. James Kell also won Silver in the J13 1x event. For the girls Charlotte Morrison and Emma Parks won a Bronze medal in the WJ14 2x. Well done to all the squad and especially to the medal winners. ------- Pauline Martin submits the following on behalf of Sir William Perkins's School. ----- It has been a very good day for the SWPS girls, in spite of the weather. The WJ 13 4x 300m of Emma Townshend, Bethan Roberts, Heather Stevenson, Ingrid Barnsley coxed by Tommi Breslin gained their first silver medal. Miriam Towie and Bianca Stewart, won a silver in the WJ14 2x 300 m. Gold Medal for the newly formed WJ14 4x+ 700m, in their first event together and looking very competent throughout, of Rachel Martin, Nell Bond, Sara Daley and Miriam Towie coxed by Tommi Breslin. Sarah Jane Gregory and Vikki Wardle progressed through the semi final and gained silver in the WJ14 2x 700m final. In addition to the medal winners, Bethan Roberts and Emma Townshend, WJ13 2x 300m, in their first regatta rowed well. Eleanor Hudson in WJ14 1x 300m, her first single event at a regatta, also did very well. Competing in the final event, the WJ14 1x 700m, Vikki Wardle and Sarah Jane Gregory, shortly after the double event, and Rachel Martin against seven other entrants. Rachel Martin got through the heats and semi final and came fourth in the final. This shows the depth of strength in the squad and is a credit to the coaching team. Vesta Veterans Head 21st March 2004 The 22nd Vesta International Veterans' Head Of The River Race For Eights that took place today in very windy conditions had one Staines Vet C crew entered. The race was shortened due to the weather so it started from Putney and finished at Hammersmith Bridge. Coxswain, Clare Wood reports that the conditions were so bad that she was frightened for her crews safety. She described the conditions as appalling and believes the race should not have taken place. Apparently there was no obvious marshalling above the start with crews struggling to hold their boats in position in the high winds for over an hour and were in jeopardy of swamping as they turned into the waves. Several boats were seen to sink including ones from Putney Town and Weybridge. The Vet G Weybridge crew were rescued but their boat was lost for a time. Clare cannot confirm whether all participants were safe and is concerned that many of the people in the water were quite old. Many boats took on a great deal of water including the Staines boat. The results are ---- Staines Vet C Start 45 Finish 37 (11th of 41) 7mins 52.2 secs. This was an excellent result for the Staines crew in the circumstances. The results are ---Staines 'A' S2 Start 13 Finish 23 (10th of 11) 16 mins 26 secs ----- Staines S3 Start 25 Finish 35 (6th of 8) 16 mins 52 secs ----- Staines W Nov Start 64 Finish 74 (2nd of 6) 19 mins 21 secs. Weybridge Veteran and Junior Head 7th March 2004 Weybridge Veteran and Junior Head took place today with 2 Staines crews and 2 Sir William Perkins's School crews competing. Excellent racing from all crews resulted in wins for the Vet D Coxed Four and the SWPS A WJ14 Quad. The Vet D Four were obstructed for the 2nd head in a row, this time by a Molesey novice veteran womens crew who decided to change which arch of Walton Bridge to pass under and steered 45 degrees across the course resulting in the Staines crew having to reverse their boat out of the situation. The crew missed out on trophies after the shield and tankards were withdrawn by the organisers after two other crews in the division pulled out on the day. This was surprising as enough crews had entered the event to qualify the event for trophies. The SWPS A quad had a fantastic row coming nearly a minute in front of the next fastest crew, St. Edwards School. It will be very interesting to see how this ever faster girls crew perform in the Schools Head of the River on the 16th March. Also racing well today were the Staines WJ14 quad coxed by Becky Corless and the SWPS B WJ14 quad who were also coxed by Becky in the second division. They both showed great promise and gained much experience from the day. There was also a win for SWPS teacher and Staines member, Liz Bernard in the WomensVet C Coxed Four rowing for Molesey BC. Women's Eights Head 6th March 2004 The Women's Eights Head of the River took place this afternoon with 2 Staines crews competing. Results are -- Staines A (S2) Start 107 Finish 189 (38th of 40) 22 mins 15.1 secs and Staines B (Nov) Start 271 Finish 216 (7th of 13) 22 mins 41.61 secs. S2 crew member, Anne Uttley reports ----- The SBC WS2 received huge support today from Bob and I just wanted to place on record our thanks to him for being such an uplifting spirit and helping hand. And special thanks also to Sara Sweeney our - it was a talking point she'll admit - breastfeeding cox ( 2 month old son at home) for such a great race. And to all the members of the club for their part. We suffered an unfortunate collision , despite the best efforts to avoid, when we were overtaking a crew and another (v abusive) overtaking crew sandwiched us together to a halt which cost us 20-30 seconds in the run up to Fulham. We dug in to a racing start and went for it. Sarah Fudge who rowed with us once before the race and subbed in to fill Clare Wood's seat at stroke deserves a huge pat on the back. We had a great day, and despite the many hurdles to get there, it was worth every minute. Reading University Head 28th February 2004 Reading University Head took place today with 2 Staines eights competing. The S2 eight came 19th overall in the 1st division (11th of 13) in a time of 14 mins 54.6 secs and the S3 eight came 34th overall in the second division (14th of 15) in a time of 15 mins 47.9 secs. Burway Head 21st February 2004 Good racing today was the verdict of the Staines coaches for the many crews that raced at Burway Head. The only winning trophies went to the Vet D Coxed Four who also won at last week's Molesey Head, today racing at Vet C after Ian McHugh brought his youth and power to the boat in substitution for John Lusty who is on a skiing holiday. This, despite the crew having a major clash just before the finish after being obstructed by a Weybridge Ladies crew and losing an estimated 20 seconds. Ted Dyos praised his juniors even though they had a minor coming together with some bankside bushes. The Sir William Perkins's School J14 quad also had a good race vying for position with the crew in front all the way up the course before taking them near the finish. The results have been combined for both divisions and estimates vary as to the effect the weather conditions had but the general feeling is that the second division took about 15 seconds longer to complete than the first division. Paul Goldswain adds ----- The Staines WJ14X had a very good result coming second in their division behind Henley despite never having rowed together before. The crew comprised of Becky Corless (niece of the well known SBC Ladies Champion, Trisha Corless) Rachel Edwards, Emma Parks, Charlotte Morrison and first time cox Jenny Goldswain. The crew were just 1 second ahead of the very competent Sir William Perkins's School. Thanks go to all parents and coaches for their support.

Molesey Veterans Head 14th February 2004 Good racing at Molesey Veterans Head today saw the Staines Veteran D Four (Staines II) not only take the class shield but finishing as the fastest four of the day. The crew consisted of Bow - Paul Goldswain, 2 - Paul Hopkins, 3 - John Lusty, Stroke - Graham Carey and Coxswain - Murray Litvak. They finished the two mile course 13 seconds in front of 6 times race winners, Maidenhead Rowing Club, in a time of 9 minutes and 51 seconds. The Sir William Perkins's School J14 quad also won today in a time of 11 minutes exactly against some excellent crews from LEH and Surbiton High School. Oarsmens Cross Country Race 24th January 2004 The Staines Veteran Women won the team prize at the Oarsman's Cross Country Run which took place in Windsor today. Remenham Challenge 18th January 2004 The Remenham Challenge took place today in cold but sunny conditions.
