The was some agreement amongst the Staines members that the race next year should be with full senior crews rather than the mixed crews who raced this year. Burway Small Boats Head 13th December 2003 Burway Small Boats Head took place today with some wind and rain making the rowing more difficult. The Sir William Perkins's School J14 double of Sarah-Jane Gregory and Vikki Wardle won their event having won the same category at Walton Small Boats Head last weekend. Staines oarsmen Alex Fitzgerald and Steve Ballantine won the Novice doubles and J13 sculler James Kell also won his event. Wallingford Head 7th December 2003 Three Staines crews competed in today's Wallingford Head. Conditions were cold but bright and sunny. The Womens Senior 3 eight came 15th of 15 in their category and 94th of 105 overall in the eights in a time of 19mins 51secs. The Womens Senior 3 Four came 9th of 9 in their category and 61st of 69 overall in the coxed fours in a time of 21mins 27secs. The Vet C Four came second in their category, only beaten by a very fast Marlow four. They came 29th out of 69 overall in the coxed fours in a time of 18mins 16secs. This was their last competitive event at Vet C as in 3 weeks time they will achieve Vet D status. Full results are available here. Walton Small Boats 6th December 2003 Walton Small Boats Head took place today in dry conditions but with a slight breeze blowing. Sir William Perkins's School had their first ever win since the inception of their rowing team earlier this year and it repays the many hours work of the Staines coaching team. Sarah-Jane Gregory and Vikki Wardle will go down in history by taking the J14 double sculls pennant with a very fast time that also beat the fastest J15 crew. See photo. They completed the course in 13mins 58.1secs and came 86th of 152 overall in the double sculls. The other results were 96th MJ16x Staines Brett 14mins 08.9secs 9th of 12, - 139th MJ14x Staines Oades 14mins 46.5secs 5th of 15, - 194th MVEx Staines A-Watson 16mins 41.3secs 3rd of 3, - 212th MJ14x Staines Pollen 18mins 24.15secs 15th of 15, - Nice to see back in competition was Roger Moulding who raced in the MVH (70-75years) single sculls category and came 224th in 20mins 07.2secs 2nd of 2, Full results can be found on the Walton RC web site. --- Splash and Dash Regatta 13th September 2003 The Splash and Dash Regatta at Coate Water Park near Swindon took place today with some successful racing. The Goldswain family won 3 medals, Tom Goldswain in the J18 sculls, Jenny Goldswain in the J12 sculls and Paul Goldswain along with Paul Hopkins, John Lusty, Graham Carey and coxswain Murray Litvak beat last year's winners, Maidenhead RC in the Vet C Fours final. This is the last regatta in the C category for this crew as from January 2004 they will achieve D status. Amongst other notable races were Nick Pollen reaching the J14 final and Louise Incidon competing in her first ever event, the J16 sculls. Charlotte Morrison teamed up with Jenny Goldswain in the J13 double sculls event and after reaching the final lost by less than a length to the Maidenhead crew who, this year, have won 30 pots and a total 51 in their rowing careers! Michael Lusty at only 10 years old and continuing his family's rowing tradition, competed in his first regatta in the J12 sculls and came a worthy second. Sir William Perkins's School which has only started rowing since May this year, narrowly missed their first ever win in the J14 double sculls losing to a very experienced Maidenhead crew in the final by 1 foot. Teacher Liz Bernard won a medal, not for her school but with her Molesey Boat Club partner in the Womens Vets Novice Double Sculls. Full results will be available in due course from the official web site. See Photographs Page. Cambridge Autumn Regatta 7th September 2003 Thanks to Carol Goldswain for this report on the Cambridge Autumn regatta that took place today ----- The Staines juniors were a credit to the club with all competitors performing well and displaying good sportsmanship throughout. There was a really good camaraderie with everyone helping and supporting each other. Special thanks to coaches Ted Dyos, Peter Smith and Mr Pollen for producing such a strong junior field and thanks to all the parents for their support. Results were: WJ15 2X -- Rebecca and Louise lost in first round after difficulties with a seat, WJ13 2x -- Charlotte and Jenny lost in final against an accomplished Tideway scullers crew. WJ13 1X -- Charlotte unfortunately hit the bank in her first round WJ13 1X -- Jenny lost in first round steered a very good course but lost to a much larger and older opponent who was just to strong. MJ18 1X -- Tom won two heats to reach the final but lost to Kephales from Lea by half a length. MS3 1X -- Tom won first heat and lost by 2ft in semi final to Baker from Marlow. MJ16 1X -- Jason Beaumont was racing for the first time and steered a good course but lost to a more experienced sculler. MJ16 1X -- Steve Brett lost in first round after colliding with the bank which we understand was his first defeat in a single. MJ14 1X -- Rob Oades won first heat but lost in next round MJ14 1x -- Nick Pollen winning first ever heat went on to win the next round but lost in the final with a brave effort against his Tideway Scullers opponent. Full results will be on the Cambridge 99 website in due course. See photographs here. FISA World Masters Regatta - Vichy 5-6th September 2003 There were a total of six Staines crews competing in the the World Masters Regatta in Vichy, France this weekend. Unfortunately there are no wins to report. Please see our Vichy Results Page for Staines crews and the official website for full details of the results of other events. Clare Wood reports ----- We're back!!! A great time was had by all at Vichy over the weekend. John found us a great campsite along the river, just up from the course. The racing was as usual of a very high calibre with some fantastic international crews, some of which we watched training from the bars on the edge of the river!!! The setting for the Regatta was great on a wide expanse of river on the edge of Vichy. We had mixed feelings on the results, some crews went faster than expected some did not perform to their usual standard, but everyone enjoyed it and we are keen to improve the results next year. On the Saturday I was hired out to a Vet E 4+ from Tideway Scullers, and they had a great row to win Gold. So between us we brought one gold medal home to Staines! Oxford City Regatta 16-17th August 2003 Leanne Johns reports ----- Only one pot this weekend but some fantastic, (or awesome as Cal would say) racing took place all weekend (and what a long weekend it was too!). Saturday ran very late all day and by 7.00pm the S38+ first round had not yet taken place and some of the crews wanted the division scratched however Exeter had come along way so Staines took them on in a straight final. Unfortunately we lost but it was a good strong row from a virtually scratch crew including 4 members of the senior squad and 4 of the novices who did themselves and the club proud. The N4+ did well all weekend getting through their first two heats but were knocked out in the semi final and the S34x were knocked out in their first heat to a very strong crew from Marlow. The Men's S28+ final took place at 8.30pm where we lost to Henley, (again!) the only consolation being we had knocked out London in the previous round. The last race of the day took place at 8.45pm! With the boys still racing the hungry girl supporters went off to Sainsburys to organise dinnner. The girls then decided take on the "barbie challenge" and yes burnt most of the food to charcoal in the process but we were all so hungry nobody seemed to care! After a VERY late night at the regatta party we moved onto Sunday....firstly congratulations to Helge Neumeister who won his Novice Single Sculls race. Also....Tom Goldswain got through to the final of the S3x but lost to a much larger opponent. Ross made his Staines Sculling debut but unfortunately got disqualified after taking out someone in the navigation channel and the S24+ got through to the final but lost to Henley. The WS4+ lost in their heat against Sons of the Thames and rowed extremely well deserving to go through into the next round after being up on the opposition the whole way until some dodgy steering by the cox (i'm allowed to say that i was the cox!). The S34x first heat finally took place at 5.30pm with London being disqualified for bad steering...straight back up to the start for the final against Marlow where this race was also stopped and re-started for bad steering with Marlow being the eventual winners. The official results will be available in due course here. See Photographs Page Maidenhead Regatta 9th August 2003 There was some good racing for Staines crews at Maidenhead Regatta which took place today. There was a win in a straight final against Maidenhead RC for the S28+ comprising Fikret Ozer, Luke Wilson, Max Somper, Mark Rolt, Steve Smith, Steve Ballantine, Adam Gill, Steve Conner and coxswain Caroline Bowman. Four of this crew ( Steve Conner, Mark Rolt, Steve Smith, Fikret Ozer & cox Caroline Bowman) also won in the S24+ event beating Marlow in the first round then Maidenhead in the final. The J15 Sculls was won by Steven Brett convincingly who also won at Burway Vet and Junior Regatta a couple of weeks ago. Helge Neumeister lost in the semi-final of the Novice Sculls against Paul Addy from Eton Excelsior following the result of a dead heat, Addy won by an advantage of one-third of a length in the re-row. The WN4+ lost to the eventual winners, Barnes Bridge and the WS48+ lost to Maidenhead in a straight final. The WJ132x of Jenny Goldswain and Charlotte Morrison reached the final despite Jenny being only J11 status. Hayley Vrublevskis adds --- A Staines BC Novice Mens 4+ also raced at Maidenhead today. Crew consisted of Adam McCarty, David Dimes, Jonny Wake, James Monk & me (Hayley) coxing. Racing against Sons of Thames, Staines were taken at the start & down almost a length all the way. They responded well to the call to go for home but, alas, Sons of Thames held them off & won by a canvas!!! Full results will be available in due course on the Maidenhead website. Also see Photographs Page Burway Junior and Veterans 27th July 2003 Paul Goldswain reports that there were two trophies today for Staines scullers in the Burway Junior and Veterans Regatta. Firstly a win for Steve Brett in the J15 event and secondly Tom Goldswain in the J18 event. Tom also won at yesterday's Staines Regatta in the Senior 3 sculls. The Vet C four had a good race but unfortunately lost to Walton by 3/4 length. There were several other good Staines races during the day. Staines Regatta 26th July 2003 Staines Regatta took place today with 5 wins from Staines Crews plus many other finalists. This was the first time the regatta was hosted by our club and proved to be extremely successful with the most entries its seen for a long time! Thanks to everyone who gave up their time to help organise and gave up their time on the day to make it run so smoothly. Staines also won the Victor Ludorum prize of a set of sculling blades as the most successful club of the day. Luke Wilson won the Novice Single Sculls, Tom Goldswain won S3 Sculls, The Vet C Coxed Four and Vet E BA/Staines Coxed Fours Won (first pot for Adrian Tollet). Fikret and Stuart won in a straight final S2 Coxless Pairs competition against Poplar & Blackwall District RC. The Mens Novice Eight won in a straight final against Thames, it was the first regatta many of them had competed in. The novice girls competed in their first race winning their first round but went out to Thames in the second round. Jules Reichel and Raff del Pero also entered into Novice Double Sculls but lost in the final to Putney Town. The WS4+ crew, coxed by Leanne Johns lost to Eton Excelsior in the final by a length. This was a scratch crew who should be very pleased with their performance even though they didn't win. Simon Biddle, Captain of Burway won the Invitation 300m Single Scull race beating Duncan Speight, Captain of Staines, by a length. London Rowing Club won the lunchtime sprint eight competition beating Staines by one length in the final. See Photographs Page and Results National Championships 20th July 2003 Bad luck strikes the lightweight girls again. Coach, Steve Tassell reports. ----- The Lightweight Coxless Four comprising of Jo Hawkes, Jenny Page, Sarah Fudge and Jodi Davis competed this afternoon in the National Championships in Strathclyde racing against Grosvenor and this years Women's Henley Champions, Aberdeen University. The Staines girls took the lead from the start and, when only 500 metres from the finish and 1 1/2 lengths in the lead, Jo's back gave in and the crippled crew were promptly overtaken resulting in the third place crew, Grosvenor, winning the event with Aberdeen University following them into second place. Needless to say, the girls are devastated after so much training has been put in and following their forced withdrawal from Henley Women's Regatta after clashing with the opposition. They will be travelling back from Scotland tomorrow. Rachel Quarrell's commentry on the race was as follows --- Race 561: Women's lightweight coxless fours final Only three crews in this race, Staines going out fast and hard with Aberdeen University a length back and Grosvenor another length behind them. Aberdeen and Grosvenor refused to stop fighting, leading to an entertainingly close finish for the spectators, with a little wild steering from Staines as the gusty wind picked up again. Staines still leading towards the finish, all three crews overlapping, but Grosvenor are on a charge, and take first Aberdeen and then Staines. Staines' steering is trashed, the 2-girl catches a crab, and it's Grosvenor gold, Aberdeen University silver, and Staines third. I hope the Staines girl is OK - she smashed herself on the forehead as she caught the crab, and is lying down, although she's clearly conscious and just keeping still as a precaution in case she's got concussion. Full results here. Molesey Regatta 19th July 2003 Good news from reporter Paul Goldswain at Molesey regatta ----- A win today for the S3 coxed four who beat Curlew RC in the final by 5 lengths. The crew consisted of Tom Goldswain, Steve Smith, Steve Conner, Robin Dunlop and coxswain Caroline Bowman. This win also represented Tom Goldswain's first (novice) win in a sweep oared boat. No other wins today but good racing from the S2 eight which won their first round against Twickenham easily but lost in the second round to Mortlake Anglian by 1 1/4 lengths. Helge Neumeister successfully reached the final of the Novice sculls only to lose to a chap from Eton Excelsior by approximately 2 lengths. Full results will be available in due course from the Molesey website. See Photographs Page. Henley Royal Regatta 2nd July 2003 Unbelievable news from Henley Royal Regatta this morning as we hear that the Staines four in the Britannia Challenge Cup lost to Nottinghamshire County R.A. by just two feet in a time of 7.16!! The Staines crew comprising Duncan Speight, Steve Balentine, Jon Woodersfield, Alex FitzGerald and cox Caroline Bowman led at the Barrier (2.07) and held their lead at Fawley (3.32) before the Nottingham crew made their comeback. The Thames Challenge Cup crew racing at 7.00pm this evening unfortunately lost to Homberger Ruderklub, Germany with a verdict of easily. The crew consisted of Robin Dunlop, Adam Gill, Steve Conner, Steve Smith, Mark Rolt, Max Somper, Terry Moore, Tom Goldswain. and cox: Caroline Bowman. The German crew won in a time of 6.28 which was the second fastest time today for the Thames Cup races. See the official HRR web site here and the rather poor official photograph here Egham Regatta 29th June 2003 Egham Regatta took place today with some fine racing. Alison Bond reports that the Senior 3 mens four of Fikret, Luke, Stuart, Helge and coxswain Hayley won their final in an exciting race against Windsor Boys School. In the womens Novice sculls, Chrissie Speight narrowly missed a trophy in her first ever regatta in this event. She had a nail biting final but eventually lost to a girl from Eton Excelsior. The Sir William Perkins's School crews also did very well in their heats, this being the first competitive event for the school since adding rowing to their list of extra curricular activities and teaming up with Staines Boat Club. Paul Goldswain has submitted a few photos taken today. See Photographs Page Marlow Regatta 21st June 2003 The official results for Marlow Regatta which took place today have now been published. Two Staines crews entered in preparation for Henley Royal Regatta in a few days time. Both crews unfortunately lost in the first round, the Senior 2 eight coming 4th of 7 in their heat in a time of 6:30.80 and the Senior 1 coxed four also coming 4th out of 5 in their heat in a time of 7:08.50. Henley Women's Regatta 21st June 2003 Henley Women's Regatta started today with the Staines lightweight coxless four competing against Bath University. Full details are not known but the official results show the Staines crew being disqualified and no time taken. Reading Amateur Regatta 15th June 2003 Steve Tassell reports that the Staines lightweight girls won their event today at Reading Amateur Regatta. Steve says --- "The girls won with a commanding verdict over Exeter University B in Elite Coxless Fours. When we turned up to race the A crew in the final we discovered they had scratched, obviously found the heat a bit too much." Full results will be available on the Reading web site here. Docklands Regatta 7-8th June 2003 Captain, Duncan Speight reports ---- SBC at Docklands. For those of you familiar with Docklands regatta the weather didn't disappoint! On Saturday there was a cross head wind which mean that those crews on the airport side had a distinct advantage, Sunday was much of the same but the wind was stronger which meant that the regatta was cancelled late in the afternoon. We still managed some excellent results with the MS3 4+ winning bronze on Saturday, the same crew of Luc, Helge, Dave and Fikret winning the gold on Sunday. A brilliant performance and one which should fill them with a lot of confidence going into the Henley qualifiers. The Women's coxless four were entered in Elite and as such were up against two crews stacked with ex Olympians so were up against it. They put in a spirited performance but the Saturday did not provide any medals. The Sunday was a different story, winning a Gold in WS1 4- which considering the conditions and the size of them all now (they're the one's that when they turn sideways you can't see any more!) was a great effort. Other crews that entered where MS2 8+ they had a couple of tough races and were pleased with their result on Sunday, coming fifth out of seven in their heat. These guys are growing on confidence and I am sure will do well at Henley. The final crew was a MS1 4-, they got through to the final but were not able to take a medal, coming fifth. The reaction was positive as in both races the rate didn't go much over 31-33 respectively (looks a bit like the crews average age?!?). The same crew was entered for S1 4+ on the Sunday but on getting to the start the regatta was cancelled due to the conditions. I think at the back of the regatta committees mind the regatta was about to be cancelled as when we got to the landing stage they were giving out cups as a means to bail out!! Full results here. Walton Regatta 7th June 2003 Roger Pailes reports that the WS4+ of Chrissie Speight, Leanne Johns, Alison Rolt, Gayle Donnelly and coxswain Roger Pailes beat Kingston BC easily in the final after the bow girl of the Kingston four caught a massive crab half way down the course. This is the first qualifying pot for Gayle and Alison (see photo). Let's hope for many more. Clare Wood advises that the Vet C mens four had a good race but could not regain the 6 second handicap they were given and lost to the Reading RC Vet D crew by 4 lengths. Full results here Metropolitan Regatta 24th May 2003 Several Staines crews competed at the Metropolitan Regatta today at Dorney Lake, Eton. Unfortunately there were no wins despite some close and exciting racing, notably the Men's Senior 2 Eights where Staines second to Caius BC by 0.72 second in the first round. Steve Tassell reports ----- The Met was promising on several counts, firstly the Men's Senior II 8 made it into the final after some very close racing and a gutsy row from everyone. Unfortunately fatigue from having doubled up in fours meant perhaps we didn't perform as well as one might have liked when it came to the final. On the Women's side we had two fours firstly our Novice/SIV girls were racing at Senior III as there was no SIV category. They surprised themselves with a solid row taking their first SIII scalp! This despite getting an official warning on the start and being put under undue pressure from the umpires. The SI coxless four was in a straight final with Oxford Uni and Imperial leading a strong field. Unfortuantely freak weather conditions right around race time meant we had some pretty substantial waves to contend with! Almost losing our bow rower some 250m in we managed to recover to get back on terms, sadly though it meant we were out of contention for the top places. Some consolation came from a tight race to the line with Bath Uni (featuring Sarah Goldswain at stroke). Thanks should go to all coaching staff and coxes for getting crews race ready and up to the start on time. Evesham Regatta 4-5th May 2003 Evesham's Annual and Sprint regattas took place this weekend with Staines excelling by winning a total of 6 events. Saturday results were:- the MS12- beating City of Bristol RC (A) by 2 lengths, the MS48+ beating New College Boat Club by 1 length. Sundays sprint results were the MS28+ beating Exeter College Boat Club by 3/4 length, the MS38+ beating Exeter College Boat Club by 3 feet, the MS24+ beating Gloucester RC by 3 lengths and the WS14+ Bewdley RC by 2 feet. Full results on Evesham's web site here. Our Captain, Duncan Speight reports --- I think we can finally say Staines Boat Club is back on the map. Not only were we involved in some fantastic racing over the weekend but the boat club spirit was amazing. The amount of support that all the crews got from the rest of the club... win or lose was brilliant, even other spectators and officials were commenting on how vocal the Staines support was! From a racing view point every race was full of excitement, the men's S4 8+ on Saturday was great, they just grew in confidence as the day went on and got the result they deserved. Cal was jumping around like a girl possessed! The MS1 2- also surprised a few people (including me!) we it won against some pretty stiff competition. All of the crews that raced on the Saturday put in good performances and should be pleased with what they have achieved, the WN4+ looked like they had been rowing together for months when in truth Claire has only been rowing for just over four weeks! The WS1 2- put in a good result and reckon with a bit of practice (this was their first outing!) they could have done better (Sarah F has joined the Jedi school of steering and will soon be using the force which will surely help!) The Sunday saw some exciting racing over 500m with the first win
going to the WS1 4+ by two feet! They were pretty happy with the result
as the Bewdley crew they raced has a fair bit of pedigree. This also
saw the second pot for Cal. The next up was the MS3 8+, they had strong
opposition in Exeter College Oxford (the third fastest college crew
at Oxford this year and coxed by a previous boat race cox) The guys
have been working hard on their start and it seemed to pay off they
shot out of the blocks and led by a few feet, the Oxford boat started
moving back on the Staines boys but Cal called for a huge push at the
boat club which just did enough to keep the Staines boys in the lead...
another close race a win by three feet!! Next up was the MS28+ this
included some of the old fogies with all the points! The pressure was
on us to win the next race as this too was against Exeter College. Well
I don't think we disappointed, we shot of the start at what felt like
50spm and managed to get a slight lead, again the Oxford boys came back
at us but again Cal called for a push at the boat club, by this point
we all had the bit between our teeth and moved on to win by 3/4 of a
length... Bob you would have been proud! And finally the MS2 4+ went
on to win in convincing style giving Cal her fifth pot of the weekend!!
Again the other races that we took part in were close, Luc lost in his
single by 3ft and the women's S44+ and novice four had good races and
I am sure that it won't be long until they win their first pot of the
season. I am sure we will be back next year hopefully with an even bigger
contingent which will include juniors and veteran's alike. Lets bring
on the Met!! Vesta Veterans Head of the River Race 30th March 2003 One Staines Vet C crew raced today in the Vesta Veterans Head of the River from Putney to Mortlake. They started in 70th position and finished 73rd in a time of 20 mins 30.28 secs and came 18th of 30 in their division thus maintaining almost exactly their form from last year. Gold star of the day must go to the women of Tideway Scullers School who came 43rd in a time of 19 mins 45.59 secs. Full results here Photographs now up from Jet Photographic Eights Head of the River Race 29th March 2003 The Head of the River Race took place today in fine sunny weather with 2 Staines crews competing. Womens Eights Head of the River 15th March 2003 The Women's Eights Head of the River Race took place today in glorious spring sunshine from Mortlake to Putney. With a record entry of 270 crews the Staines Senior 3 eight started 218th and finished 141st in a time of 23 mins 45.62 secs. They came 64th of 118 crews in their division. Full results are available here. Sarah Goldswain, currently studying at Bath University, rowed in their first eight which came 117th in a time of 23 mins 27.28 secs. Burway Head of the River 1st March 2003 Burway Head took place today with only 3 boats containing Staines members competing. Tom Goldswain and Rob Baker teamed up with Marlow for the 4x event & came 4th out of 5 in a time of 10 mins 35 secs. The Vet C 4+ women started the race but after turning realised something was wrong with their rudder. On checking, they discovered it had been sheared off whilst jostling for position before the race - which was shame as their only opposition were the same Weybridge crew they beat at Molesey two weeks before. The Staines/Walbrook Vet C 4- men came 3rd of 3 in a time of 11 mins 23 secs. Their time was not helped by a Broxbourne S34+ who steered into them as our crew overtook causing both boats to come to a complete halt. As a result, the Staines/Walbrook boat lost about 30 secs. Full results are available on the Burway web site. Nottingham Head of the Trent 23rd February 2003 Eight crews from Staines took part in the Head of the Trent at Nottingham today.
