They finished in 109th position overall and 13th out of 16 in their division, with a time of 20 mins 7.1 secs. - A late report here from crew member Duncan Speight. - As we were bombing through Barnes Bridge, just about to over take Pinsents four a womens quad and womens four decided to have a rather large accident. We all thought that we were being applauded by all on the bridge for our fantastic and manly efforts, although on turning round to check where we were going I soon realised that this was not the case. The womens quad had turn 90 degrees and was floating down the river like a piece of drift wood, we threw out the emergency parachute to slow our progress, once fully deployed we slammed the brakes on worked our way around the drift wood and off we went in hot pursuit of the women's four, out of the stream this was damn hard work!! We then got to Hammersmith where we all seemed to forget how to row, making the last part of the race rather uncomfortable!! I am going to invest in some mirrors and a big horn for our boat (and maybe another steersman!) saying that I am sure the amount of wheezing and coughing going on would have scared off most of the other competitors!! Oh well! Duncan Speight. Jet Photographic photo here Boston Marathon 16th September 2001 The 31 mile Boston Marathon took place today with one Staines crew entered. The Staines womens novice coxed quad scull returned a time of 4 hours 31 minutes and 15 seconds. They were the only crew rowing in this category. Word has it that, although blistered and aching, they want to do it again next year. Official results overall and by event. A report just in from crew members, Hayley and Clare Firstly & most importantly, many thanks (big hugs & kisses)
to Mike Piper & Alan McBurnie for all their help & encouragement
during the day. Without them we would have
.. Arrived at the start by 11:05 with cox, Alan 'McB', safely &
smugly wedged in with heavy duty bubble wrap
.. he reassured Stroke
that the only 'popping' to be done down the course would be from wrap!!.
0-13.5km: Started well. Sun was shining with clear blue Autumnal skies. Spirits high but feeling nervous. Settled into a chunky 22 spm. Took our first two victims within 10 km .OK one was a 14 year old single scull but it still counted!!!. Apprehensive about approaching first & only lock, where we had to lift the boat out (blades still in gates) and carry it over a bank & then back into the River Whitham on the other side. Apprehension justified. Arms & legs already felt weak, boat heavy & help from a friendly marshal (who, incidentally had never been stupid enough to row the marathon himself!!) was greatly welcome . Then, as if by magic, Mike appeared with a cheer!! 14-20km: We were not looking forward to the next 37km's & getting
back into the boat already seemed painful
wooden seats are not
'user friendly' even with Godfrey padding!!. Stopped at about 14km with
jammed rudder. McB jumped out & fixed it!! Oh goody
. we could
carry on
.. bless him!!! 20-25km: Started to question why we had ever agreed to do it - NOT EVEN HALF WAY YET!!!!! Each kilometer seemed longer than the last. McB counted down each one. After threats of death from Bow, McB realized announcing the 'distance so far' was a little risky & turned the cox box off. The cows along the bank looked on smugly & the blisters were already becoming intolerable!! Reached the 25km point & we were reminded of 25km/14.4miles to go!!! Groan . Then Mike appeared with bananas!! 25-30km: "Mind still willing, body started to resist! Hands
and bum very 30-35km: Legs getting tired - numb from backs of the knees to lower back. Boat 'wobbled' along as bums wriggled on seats in an attempt to get comfortable. Stroke needed to stretch her legs so 'pit stop' requested at 34km. Kindly marshals helped us in & then watch with amusement as stroke rolled around the landing stage!!?. (De ja vu ..neither of these two marshals had done the marathon themselves!!). Came to the conclusion at this point that the marathon was organized by sadist!! 35-40km: Feeling sick. The thought of another 15km almost brought tears to our eyes. Rating stayed at 22spm but puddles getting smaller & closer. The boat continued to wobble on . 40-45km: Feeling SICKER. The urge to stop was overwhelming. A silence
fell over the crew with exception of 2 who urged us all on. Only the
equivalent of 4 lengths of the Staines stretch left!! Ohh..if only we
were at Staines at that point!! All finished, boat on grass, we wondered around almost dazed!! 31 miles in 4:31 hours was exacted as we had hoped. As a crew we had only rowed together 3 times previously & the furthest we had trained together was the row from Staines to Weybridge to take the boat to the trailer on the previous Saturday morning!! I know we ALL 'enjoyed' the experience and a few even want to do the marathon again!!. :o) Worcester Regatta 9th September 2001 Fine racing resulted in two Staines wins. A report here from our Secretary Murray Litvak. A FINE END TO THE SEASON FOR TOM GOLDSWAIN & THE VET MEN After 2½ hours drive to deepest Worcestershire to compete in Worcester Autumn Regatta, delayed from earlier in the year, due to the severe flooding, it was a bumper day for Staines Crews. Tom Goldswain won his Novice sculling "pot" in superb style beating a somewhat larger sculler by at least two lengths. This came in bizarre circumstances after Tom's win in the semi final. Supporters on the bank, and even some of the umpires thought that it was the Final and tried to present Tom with the trophy. This could have been quite cruel if Tom had later lost later, but Tom rose to the occasion and put on a superb display in the Final. A special mention must go to Ted (Dyos) for coaching Tom over the years. The Vet Men again decided to race B & C categories with Andy Webb, subbing in for Paul Goldswain in the bow seat in the B category. The B heat was lost to Loughborough by ¼ of a length, but given the very relaxed method of starting, and huge stagger on the finish, it was still a moral victory. In the C event, the first round was against Upton (localish crew) and with Staines on the favoured outside of the bend we won comfortably by 2/3 of a length. The semi final against Warwick saw certain members of the crew catch two massive crabs (we are almost talking boat stoppers), but we still managed to get across the line first. This presented us with a Final against Leicester (avid readers of these pages will realise that Leicester have been beaten three times on the trot by us at Ross, and most recently only two weeks ago, so it was always going to be close). The one factor that did help Staines was knowing that Leicester had also been beaten by Loughborough by 2/3 of a length, so in theory we were faster. However, we had the unfavoured inside of the bend. The start went well, with a rating of 44 being hit, and 460m later still pounding away at 42, we beat Leicester by 2/3 of a length. Medals were presented "en boat". The successful crew were stroke - Graham Carey, 3 - John Lusty, 2 - Paul Hopkins, bow - Paul Goldswain and Cox - Murray Litvak. Most of that crew have now had 5 wins under their belt this season - so the training must have gone well!!!! Carol Goldswain lost in the semi final after beating Ironbridge RC in the first round. Sam Newman lost his second ever race by two lengths to Evesham RC in the Junior 16 Sculls and also losing was the Junior 16 Double Scull after a close finish. Pictures available on the Photographs page Pubs and Clubs Regatta 2nd September 2001 The results and photographs for this event are available here Ross on Wye Veteran and Junior Regatta 26th August 2001 A win today for the Vet C Fours crew of Paul Goldswain, Paul Hopkins, John Lusty, Graham Carey and coxwain Murray Litvak. They beat Bedford RC in the Quarter finals, Hollingworth Lake RC in the Semi final and Leicester RC in the Final by a quarter of a length. This win represents the third victory in a row for this crew at this event at Ross on Wye. The Leicester crew were also the winners of the Vet B event in which the same Staines crew (with the substitution of Andy Webb in bow seat) were knocked out by Bristol Ariel in the first round by half a length. Carol Goldswain was beaten in the final of the Veteran Novice Single Sculls by one length after leading to the half way mark. Sarah Goldswain narrowly lost in the final of the J18 Single Sculls and Tom Goldswain was beaten in the quarter finals of the J15 Single Sculls. Pictures available on the Photographs page Maidenhead Regatta 11th August 2001 A great win today for Sarah Goldswain in the Womens J18 Sculls. Sarah beat A. Boyce of Maidenhead easily in a straight final. The Womens S4 Eight was beaten in the first round by Vesta by a margin of one length. The Womens Novice Coxed Four was beaten by another Vesta crew in the first round by half a length. The Mens Double Scull also lost as did Carol Goldswain in the first round of the Womens Novice Sculls. Tom Goldswain in the Mens J15 Sculls lost in the final by one length to D. Tipney of Marlow RC. Mr. Tipney won this years J15/J16 National Championships and the Schools National Championships. An unfortunate draw for Tom! The Royal Holloway four of Sarah Fudge, Anna Smith, Della Lindsay and Jodi Davis also came home with a win in the Womens S2 Coxed Four. The Royal Holloway Mens Novice Four lost by one length to Maidenhead in the final after rolling violently to one side, just after the start and scaring the coxwain, Jo Hawkes, in the process. Henley Town and Visitors Regatta 4th August 2001 Two Staines crews entered. The mens novice four and the womens Senior 1 four. The womens four lost to Molesey RC easily who, in turn, were beaten by Hereford RC by 2 lengths. The novice four lost in the final, racing against Vesta and Eton Excelsior. Staines were leading Vesta by one length when a cruiser sent a destructive wave which completely upset the boat resulting in Vesta regaining the lead and winning by a canvas. Eton came third. Full results available here Staines Regatta 28th July 2001 Although Maidenhead won the Victor Ludorum this year, Staines crews had some fine races. The Vet C Four of Paul Goldswain, Paul Hopkins, John Lusty,Graham Carey and cox Murray Litvak beat Thames RC in the final and then proceeded to take the Vet B trophy as well with the substitution of Andy Webb in the bow seat. The Royal Holloway/Staines composite crew in the Womens Senior four coxed fours of Sarah Fudge, Della Lindsay, Jodi Davis and Keiran Ablett went on to win the final against Staines after beating Kingston RC in the semi finals. The invitation eights events in both mens and womens categories were won by British Airways against SAS Roklubben. The Danes were again out in force for the regatta and their vocal support for the Staines crews was much appreciated by all. Tom Goldswain lost by one length in the semi final of the novice fours to the eventual winner. It will not be long before we see some impressive victories from this young man. Pictures available on the Photographs page Full results available here And now a late report from Peter Sweeney ------- The first final of the day was contested at the wonderfully early hour of 11.42 am in the Mens S2, 2- event, in which Terry Sweeney and myself masquerading as the 'Fluke Brothers' demolished a crew from Parr's Priory by 2 lengths. We had previously beaten a crew from Maidenhead by a convincing 2 feet ( we were winding down after being 2 lengths up). Molesey Regatta 21st July 2001 About half a dozen Staines crews entered and although there were no wins there were some excellent performances. Notably, the first ever event by Carol Goldswain and Jo Hawkes in the womens novice double sculls event where they won the first round against Guildford RC and then lost in the final. Sarah Goldswain who lost by a canvas in the final of the womens junior sculls. The mens vet C four clashed blades after the start of their race and returned to the stake boats for a restart. The race was a dead heat. The re-row resulted in a win by Molesey BC by a third of a length. Pictures available on the Photographs page Bedford Quarts Regatta 15th July 2001 Several Staines crews entered with varied results. Notably a win for Robin Dunlop in the Novice sculls. After nine races Robin lost the gallon tankard race between the winners of the two novice scull divisions. Robin also teamed up with Duncan Speight and lost in the final of the S1 pairs. The mens novice four beat the University of Kent and Weybridge in the heats before the strokeman caught a massive crab after leading the semi final with 1st and 3rd Trinity. They could not regain their position. Henley Veterans Regatta 14th July 2001 After winning the first heat easily against Poole Rowing Club, the Veteran C four were beaten by one and a quarter lengths by a very good Thames Tradesmen crew. Pictures available on the Photographs page Kingston Regatta 14th July 2001 Duncan Speight and Robin Dunlop sadly lost in the first round of the Senior 2 pairs today. They were the only Staines crew entered. Egham Regatta 1st July 2001 After an exciting days racing the Staines results are as follows. Mens novice four lost in final. Womens S4 lost after getting bye to final. Womens novice four lost in the semi final. Carol Goldswain lost to winner in the womens novice sculls. Tom Goldswain and his partner in the J15 double sculls unfortunately lost by 2 feet after colliding with a moored boat close to the finish. They were leading the race at the time. Tom Goldswain won the J15 sculls after racing three preliminary rounds. He was comfortably leading the final by one and a half lengths when his opposition fell off his seat. Well done Tom! Reading Town Regatta 30th June 2001 The Veteran C four of Paul Goldswain (bow) - Paul Hopkins (2) - Andy Webb (3) - Graham Carey (stroke) - Murray Litvak (coxwain) beat Reading Rowng Club in the final of the Vet C Coxed Fours by a distance of one and a half lengths in a time of 3 mins. 25 secs. ( less 6 seconds of handicap time ). This being the only Staines crew present. Pictures available on the Photographs page Henley Womens Regatta 23rd-24th June 2001 Commiserations to Sarah Goldswain who entered the Junior single Sculls event at Henley Womens Regatta. The official result is as follows. (287) F Bertram (Wycliffe) versus (288) S Goldswain (Staines) Verdict: Easily Time: 00:06:47 Weybridge Ladies Regatta 10th June 2001 No winners today unfortunately. Among the losers were the womens novice four and the womens senior 2 eight who lost by approximately 3 lengths. Commiserations to Carol Goldswain who entered her first ever novice sculls event and lost by 2 lengths to the eventual winner and then raced in the invitation veteran C sculls and lost by 1 length to one time Staines oarswomen Di Hunt. Coate Water Regatta 19th May 2001 Congratulations to Robin Dunlop and Duncan Speight who won the Senior 1 coxless pairs and promptly fell in - reason unknown.
