14th January 2003 Further information
from Martin Levy re. the Remenham Challenge due to take place
on Suinday 19th January 2003 ------- Dear Captain, A few points
to note: Whilst ample marshals will be provided in launches,
crews race at their own risk. Please select your most experienced
coxswains. The Tideway will still have a lot of landwater coming
down. Bring plenty of warm kit in case it's cold in the marshalling
area. The mens veteran handicaps are based on the ARA recommendation
for a 16 minute race, which is the best estimate for the 5 km
course. If the actual time is very different this will be adjusted
accordingly. Only Events with only one entry will not receive
trophies, but will be declared division winners. Vet A, B &
C crews are included. The Molesey veteran E crew can consider
themselves winners of the D, E & F category! On past experience
& the ARA recommendation it is not fair or feasible to include
them with the other group. Let's have a fair & safe race.

13th January 2003 A letter here from
Martin Levy to club captains ------- Dear Captain, Having looked
at the conditions at Staines, and with more rain forecast, it
is sadly impossible to run the race there. It will be held on
the Tideway based at Thames Rowing Club. The mandatory briefing
for coxwains will be at 9.30 a.m. on 19th January 2003. The
race will start at 11.00 from Battersea Bridge to the bottom
of Craven Cottage, a distance of 5,000 metres or 3 miles 188
yards. Further instructions will be issued with the start list.
Due to the large volume of landwater which is still coming down
it is possible that there will be no ebb tide. If this is the
case the race will be rowed over the same course but against
the stream. I know this would not be ideal, so let's all pray
for dry weather. Best regards, MARTIN LEVY Vice President. Home

11th January 2003 Remenham Challenge
Update from Duncan Speight ------------ Although the water has
dropped considerably over the past week it has been decided
that due to the current river conditions and that further rain
is forecast, the Remenham Challenge be moved to Thames Rowing
Club. The course it likely to be from Battersea to Putney although
a final decision has not yet been made.

Please let me have your entries
by phone, fax, e-mail or post
(crews & statuses only - no names or numbers required) by 5
p.m. on Monday 13th January 2003.
There
will be individual trophies this year, but again NO
ENTRY FEES. We are delighted to be able to offer the Ray Penney Trophy, with pewter tankards, for Men’s Novice VIIIs. There may be other ancient silverware gathering
dust in bank vaults around the clubs which could be brought back to
life - please let me know if this is the case. The overall trophies
will be the oarblades for the fastest men's & women's
crews.
Should
the red flags still be up at that time the event may be transferred
to the Tideway. Let’s hope this won’t be necessary.
Yours
sincerely,
Martin Levy
- Vice President.
