GREEN BOARDS -- Normal rowing from Staines Boat Club.

27th March 2007

This website has been running in its present form for over 6 years now and the time has come to freshen it up and to give my hard worked typing finger a rest! For the last 3 months, Adam Gill, with his professional website knowledge, has been working on a new Staines Boat Club website that promises to include all the latest technology and to provide a completely new interface to complement it.

I have enjoyed designing and running this website and hope you have enjoyed visiting it too. I thank all the contributors that have provided the content to keep the 40,000 or so visitors a year informed of day to day events at the club.

May I please ask that you give Adam all your support in his new role as 'webmaster' as he continues to add both existing and new content to the site. Adam will switch the site over to the new one in the next day or so. You will find it at the usual address - www.stainesboatclub.co.uk. All future website content should be sent to Adam at this address -- webmaster@stainesboatclub.co.uk.

See you all at the club soon --- Graham

26th March 2007 Men's Coordinator, Chris Lacy writes ----- Men's Squad meeting 10.00 am Sunday 1st April (& no it's not a joke!!) @ the club .... Meeting 1 hour followed  by a boat audit... expected 1 hour (if we all help out).

26th March 2007 Head Coach, Bob Slade writes ----- We had one eight racing at Kingston Head at S4 status, the same eight will also be racing in the Tideway Head of the River race on Saturday, four members of the eight were from the Junior squad, together with one of our new Brunel guys and three senior men. The weather was good BUT, the last 1500metres was into a headwind giving a lumpy row to all crews. The eight rowed well together and were chasing Clare B.C. eight all the way to the finish. My congratulations go to the Juniors, Tom Ryan, James Kell, Rob Oades, Nick Pollen, together with Malcolm, Chris, Damian and stroke Terry. Rachel Lafbery from the Junior Girls squad coxed the boat magnificently. Finish position was 41 overall (started 52nd) and 3rd out of 8 in the Senior 4 division.
Terry Moore advise the results for Kingston Head are can be found here.

26th March 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- I wasn't at the club yesterday but we're still having problems with the SBC launch. Please do not use until further notice.

26th March 2007 Thanks go to Bob Slade who has fitted a new battery to the coaching launch after it failed during a training session last week.

22nd March 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- The draw for Kingston Head of the River Race that takes place this Saturday 24th March at 2.00pm, has been published and can be found here. SBC has a single entry, a S4 eight starting at No. 52.

22nd March 2007 Adam Gill sends this reminder -----Firstly - hope you're enjoying the rest week (& weekend). I know some are itching to jump on an erg (what have I done to you??) but you need this rest now - it's actually part of your training - it will lead to better quality outings and focus over the coming months. Quick reminder that we've got a meeting for ALL at the club on Monday evening at 1930 - bring kit (inc. good trainers) there will be a brief bit of training followed by a chat. High level agenda for meeting: 1. Review of the winter, 2. The summer, 3. Our technique - what we are aiming for, Adam

21st March 2007 Men's Coordinator, Chris Lacy writes ----- The Men's squad have two boats entered in the Head of the River Race on Sat 31st March. We are looking for two coxes with Tideway experience. Please contact me if you are able to help out.

21st March 2007 The draw for the Head of the River Race has now been published. Staines Boat Club has two crews entered, Staines I (S3) starting at 232 and Staines II (S4) starting at 380. Brunel University have a Novice crew entered starting at 248. The race from Mortlake to Putney will take place on Saturday 31st March at 3.45pm.

20th March 2007 The following information courtesy of the Tideway Slug ----- The Environment Agency has asked the Thames Regional Rowing Council to extend the ARA six letter boat codes currently required for vessels using the Tideway, to the upper reaches of the region. The move was agreed by the council on Monday evening, so clubs and events on the Thames above Teddington can expect written communication sometime soon. You'll probably have until the end of September to get all boats numbered - n.b. this will apply to non Thames-region crews visiting the river to take part in events such as Met regatta, Egham International or Henley Royal, as well as clubs based in the Upper Thames.

19th March 2007 Liz Bernard has added some of her photos of the National Junior Sculling Head to the SWPS rowing website.

18th March 2007 Bob Hopkins and Tim Capell both send photos from yesterday's Women's Head of the River Race. The lone SBC entry, a S2 crew started 150th and finished 86th (25th of 33 in division) in a time of 20 mins 46.45 secs. Full results can be found here. See Photographs Page.

16th March 2007 Mary-Ann Chalmers writes ----- I need to sell my Stampfli 1x. Everyone who has tried out this boat has ended up buying a Stampfli, I can think of at least 6: I should have asked the manufacturer for a commission! Here is your opportunity to buy it at second hand price and still in great condition. This boat would suit a weight range of 65-75kg (see below) and took me all the way through from Senior3 improver to successful Scottish Squad. See For Sale Page for more details.

16th March 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Happy Birthday to Nick Pollen who turned 17 today - car drivers beware! ;-)

16th March 2007 Liz Bernard writes ----- Just to add to Bob’s and Craig’s reports of the results of the National Schools Sculling Head: SWPS WJ14 4x+ ( the crew included a WJ13 and a WJ13 cox), came 14th out of a field of 27, and the WJ15 4x+(coxed by Emillie Wardle aged 10!) came 26th out of a field of 42!  Well done to all crews, who have now earned a weekend off!

15th March 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle forwards this photo taken by John Morrison of the bronze medallist crew from the National Junior Sculling Head yesterday.

15th March 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Ex-member Samantha White is running the Race For Life in Cambridge on the 8th July and would really welcome some support. She has a fundraising page at http://www.raceforlifesponsorme/samanthawhite if anyone would like to donate and support Cancer Research. They are hoping to raise £60 million so every little helps. Thanks.

14th March 2007 Kit Officer, Tom Blackman emails regarding new kit -----Hello all, please see attached the photo’s (pic 1, pic 2, pic 3) to see if you and your squads would like one…. They are £26 each and from New Wave. They can have the following added for each squad “men’s squad, junior squad, or just left with the boat club crest” The women’s shirts are fitted. Please forward them out to each squad for me and email me back at tom.blackman@hotmail.co.uk if you would like one with your size.

14th March 2007 Head Coach, Bob Slade writes ----- Today at Dorney Lake the National Junior Sculling Head was finally raced (transferred from Henley). Congratulations have to go to the organisors "The Scullery", regarding the huge amount of effort required to stage the event, together with thanks to Eton and all at Dorney Lake. The races were held as twice 1900 metres for the Boys and Girls in the top age groups (aggregate times taken) and single 1900 metres for the younger boys and girls. The weather was fantastic and we saw Dorney Lake at its finest with a total of 1600 scullers taking part! Staines Boat Club had one entry in the WJ18 Quads division, and sculling magnificently (albeit a slight blow or two) they finished third in their group, rewarded with a Bronze Medal, not bad for a four week crew! Also this crew was made up of two Sir William Perkins' girls and two Staines Boat Club Girls, this marks the first time that this crew structure has been raced under SBC colours. WELL DONE GIRLS, and well done to all the other Sir William Perkins' girls who raced today.

14th March 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Some great news just in from the National Junior Sculling Head at Dorney Lake. Well done to the WJ18 4x of Emma Corless (SBC), Charlotte Morrison (SBC), Rachel Martin (SWPS) and Vicki Wardle (SWPS) who came 3rd out of 22 in their event and thus win a Bronze Medal. The SWPS WJ18 4x also did very well and came 11th out of 22 - three of their crew are actually WJ16. Further results to come.

13th March 2007 News from Rachel Quarrell's New Rowing Information page ----- A new online magazine called the Rowing Voice (UK), first issue out today. When you get to the download page, it's in PDF format and about 7.2 MB in size.

12th March 2007 From the Weybridge RC website ----- We took the difficult decision this morning to cancel the Weybridge Veteran & Junior Head (18th March). The small number of entries, plus continued concerns about the state of the river, meant that we thought it best to pull the plug (sorry!) sooner rather than later. All entry cheques will be destroyed.
12th March 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- This week's events: SBC and SWPS are competing at the National Junior Sculling Head at Dorney Lake on Wednesday (draw here). SBC also have a crew (#150) in the Women's Eights Head on Saturday (2.30pm). Good luck to all crews and we hope to see a good turnout of supporters to cheer them on.

12th March 2007 Mike, the friendly community support officer says that this new system, Police Direct may help with overcoming crime along the river. e.g. youths throwing stones at rowing boats etc. Unfortunately it only covers the Surrey bank currently but nevertheless, here is an extract from their website ----- Welcome to Police Direct, a new messaging system being trialled by Surrey Police. Do you want to be kept up to date with what’s going on in your area? Do you want to find out about local policing issues that affect you? Now you can. Surrey Police are trialling a new exciting free message system designed to keep you informed via text/SMS, email or voice message to your mobile and landline. We are one of the first forces in the country to offer the Police Direct system. It gives us the ability to send you information on local crime, advice to reduce the chances of becoming the victim of a crime and make Surrey safer for everyone. The message system allows you to receive free up-to-the minute news how you want it. It allows Surrey Police to send you messages direct to your computer, mobile phone or landline. On registration Police Direct allows you to tailor the messages you will receive to your personal needs. The flexibility of the system means that you can register with up to three postcodes, your home, your place of work and perhaps the address of a vulnerable relative, helping give you valuable peace of mind.

11th March 2007 The BBQ to welcome the Brunel rowers to the boat club took place last evening. As well as the 'guess if it is raw or cooked' BBQ (due to the darkness rather than the ability of the cooks), guests enjoyed the spectacle of the Brunel boys trying to down the yard of ale. This they did but it took four of them to achieve it!! More training needed if they are to win this year then. See Photographs Page.

10th March 2007 Rob Oades sends this link to his photographs on the Kodak Easy Share Gallery of last month's Hampton Head where the Staines junior boys and SWPS girls were competing.

9th March 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Just a final reminder that there will be a BBQ at the club after Reading Uni Head (this Saturday 10th March) to welcome the Brunel rowers to the boat club. BBQ to be lit at 6pm and then the bar will be open for the evening. To give us an idea of numbers for food there will be a sign up sheet in the clubhouse from this evening. Everyone is welcome.

8th March 2007 The Head of the River Race takes place at 3.45pm on Saturday 31st March. Adam Gill advises that the men's draw is out and published here. Both Staines crews (Nos. 232 & 380) and the Brunel crew (248) are racing. Note that the Cambridge University blue boat goes off at No.11.

7th March 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle forwards this email ----- Dear Competing Clubs, it is with great regret that I write to inform you of the cancellation of Reading University Head. With the stream at the speed it is, it would have been impossible to safely marshall the amount of boats taking part, so we have had to take the decision to cancel on safety grounds. All entry cheques will be destroyed. It is a real shame, as we had recorded a record entry, and were looking forwards to the best Reading Uni Head ever. I hope to see you again next year when the river should hopefully be in better condition! Kind regards, Simon Barbour, RUBC President.

7th March 2007 Julian Blackman writes with a reminder to all at SBC to sponsor the SBC team in the Three Peak Challenge. Julian says ----- We know the challenge is some months off yet, but we would really like to get as many sponsors as we can. So, just to re-cap. We (Dom South, Bonny South, Duncan Speight, Mark Smith, Iain Ritchie, and myself) will be climbing The Three Peaks (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon) in 24 hours in September. We are doing this to raise money for the National Deaf Childrens Society, and our aim is to raise at least £5000.00, so we would really appreiciate the help of SBC members in donating money to help us reach our target. We have registered a web page with "Just Giving" which can be found at: www.justgiving/hillbillies.com. Thanks also to those members that have already sponsore us either through the web page or via our sponsorship forms. Best of luck to the crews competing in the WHRR and HRR!!! Thanks & Regards, Julian Blackman.

5th March 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Just a reminder that there will be a BBQ at the club after Reading Uni Head (this Saturday 10th March) to welcome the Brunel rowers to the boat club. BBQ to be lit at 6pm and then the bar will be open for the evening. To give us an idea of numbers for food there will be a sign up sheet in the clubhouse from this evening. Everyone is welcome.

4th March 2007 Thomas Lange sends a link for The Scullery which on its website states ----- This is an independent organisation dedicated to the support and development of junior sculling at all levels in the United Kingdom. The first task for The Scullery is to organise a national level junior sculling head of river race at Henley on Thames to compensate for the removal of these events from the Schools Head of River Race. The next event is to be held on Wednesday,14th March 2007.

2nd March 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- The draw for the Women's Eights Head that takes place at 2.30pm on Saturday 17th March, is out and can be found here. SBC have a Senior 2 crew entered. Good luck to them on the day and we hope to see a good turnout of supporters to cheer them on.

28th February 2007 From the Burway RC website ----- Owing to the high and fast river conditions the Burway Head has been cancelled. All cheques for entry fees will be destroyed. Thank you for your support of the event.

27th February 2007 Jenny Page forwards this newsletter from Rowperfect which may be of interest.

27th February 2007 Social Secretary, Katie Stopher emails ----- Does anyone have a gazebo we could borrow for the Brunel barbeque on the 10th March in case it rains? Would be very grateful! If you do please email the social address: sbcpartyon@hotmail.co.uk.

27th February 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle forwards an email from Tom Saunders with links to these photos from the Natures Images website of the 'Brunel guys' at BUSA. Mens Eight - 1 - 2, Coxlesss 4 - 1, Coxed 4 (B) - 1, Coxed 4 (A)-didn't race. Craig also forwards these results - Brunel coxed 4 (b) 25th time of 14.52, Coxless 4 6th 13.49, Champ 8- 16th 12.58 - (not 12th but still a very good time though).

26th February 2007 Di Gill sends this Race Report - The Hammersmith Women's and Juniors Head took place yesterday with a Staines Women's crew finally getting to race after all the bad weather - (cox: Aidan) Katie Young, Nikki Browning, Katherine Kran, Katie Stopher, Claire Lovelady, Catherine Blake, Sarah Goldswain, Ali Stevens. The crew had to deal with a last minute change as stroke girl Ruth Moody was taken ill the day before the race. Fortunately Claire Lovelady came to the rescue and after a crew re-jig they were able to take to the water. The last minute change left the crew over pointed and no longer able to race Senior 3; the race organisers allowed the change to Senior 2, but the crew still had the aim of being the fastest Senior 3 crew. Despite this upset, a solid performance was given and the Staines Women did themselves and the club proud. The crew came home in a time of 12:24, which would have made them the clear winners of the Senior 3 pennant, beating the next S3 crew Putney Town by 15 seconds. This time placed the crew 6th in the Senior 2 division, 30 seconds off the winners Mortlake Anglian and Alpha. An excellent result, which proves that the training and all the blisters are paying off. Well done to the crew and coaches and a special thanks to those who came up to support! Full results can be found on the AK website. PLEASE REMEMBER that the WEHORR takes place in 3 weeks time – more supporters needed for that please!! Wishing the girls the best of luck and hoping that they can advance from their start number and break back into the top 100 crews, as the Staines Women did in 2005.

26th February 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle advises that the start order for Burway Head is available here. They were heavily oversubscribed.

26th February 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Well done to the guys from Brunel University who came 12th out of 30 in the Men's Championship Eights at the BUSA Head of the River at the weekend. Tom tells me that their time of 12:58 was just a minute behind the winners. Results for the crew they had in M4- and the two crews they had in M4+ are TBA.

26th February 2007 Secretary, Murray Litvak emails with the Entry Instructions and Information Documentation for the 2007 Junior Inter-Regional Regatta trials.

26th February 2007 Head Coach, Bob Slade writes ----- The proposed April 2007 training camp will not be available this year due to late response from our first choice, and the accommodation logistics of the Exmoor site. My apologies for any inconvenience this has caused anyone at SBC in their planning of future availability. I am equally disapointed that I could not make it happen.

25th February 2007 Social Secretary, Katie Stopher requests ----- If anyone can provide donations of raffle prizes for the dinner dance I will be eternally grateful. Please let me know as soon as possible.

25th February 2007 Social Secretary, Katie Stopher emails ----- There will be a barbeque on the 10th March at the club after Reading Uni Head to welcome the Brunel rowers to the boat club. Barbeque to be lit at 6pm, and then the bar will be open for the evening.

25th February 2007 The results of Molesey Veterans Head that took place yesterday have now been published.

23rd February 2007 Head Coach, Bob Slade writes ----- This weekend Feb.24th/25th. has been one of the most difficult weekends we have currently had regarding where crews were racing, Henley Junior Head, Molesey Vets Head & Remenham Head, and Brunel going to Busa Head, Nottingham, with the womens squad racing at Hammersmith Head on Feb.25th. Logistically this produced a nightmare situation regarding trailers. ALL of this activity was turned on its head with the cancellation of Henley Junior Head and Remenham Head. So everyone "stay cool", lets get back into home rowing, and onto Burway Head, next weekend. Big thankyou's go to Brunel guys who unloaded the big trailer on Thursday night, together with thanks to Chris Lacy for towing the trailer and Brunel boats accross to Kings, Putney so that they could be loaded onto Kings College trailer for Nottingham. We wish Brunel and the womens squad good racing and success.

22nd February 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Despite the cancellations we still have some crews racing this weekend. Good luck to the the Brunel guys who are racing at BUSA and the SBC women who are racing at Hammersmith.

21st February 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle advises that both Henley Junior Head and Remenham Challenge have now definitely been cancelled. There is a possibility that the organisers may try to reschedule Henley Junior Head for March 25th. Note that this is the same weekend as Kingston Head.

21st February 2007 Secretary, Murray Litvak emails ----- 1ST REGATTA MEETING FOR 2007 -- The first meeting for this year will take place at 8pm on Thursday 1st March. Please advise any committee member who doesn’t have access to this, of the date and time so that they can attend. If you can’t make it then please advise me.

20th February 2007 David Biddulph's Calendar Page is showing this weekend's Henley Junior Head as being cancelled due to the safety plan not being submitted to TRRC in time for their approval.

19th February 2007 A reminder that the Magna Carta gym reopens today so there will be winter training as normal from this evening.

16th February 2007 Secretary, Murray Litvak sends further JIRR information ----- Dear All, Sorry to any of you that have received this and don't need it. Whilst I have mentioned that JIRR trials would be the Sunday after the eights head it now transpires that entries for the inter regional close on that day, so I have booked Dorney for the 24th March for the trials. Format will be as in previous years but please note the addition of 8o for both girls and boys. As the region seems to be shrinking again (I am waiting confirmation as to where the split is) I will for a change be encouraging composite crews. I will get a more detailed notice out during the week. Regards Chris Boothroyd, Henley Rowing Club.

16th February 2007 Secretary, Murray Litvak sends this letter from Ruth Hatton about the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta and trials ----- Dear All, Thanks for your responses for trial dates, the most popular date is Sunday March 18th, so I we will go for that. My proposal for the trials is this:
• Meet at 8.30am to start timing at 9am.
• Use one/two lanes for timing, depending on numbers of helpers and crews.
I know that not everyone can make the trials so I suggest that we apply the following principles, to ensure that as many children as possible compete and that we enter a crew in every event:
• The fastest crews at the trails are selected;
• No-doubling up is allowed except to fill vacant slots;
• Any event where no-one comes along for trials is open to those who were unable to make the trials or who attended trials in another boat type (if there is more than one candidate for this then the fastest crew is decided either by private match or discussion organised by the coaches of the crews).
The events for the JIRR are shown on the attached draft instructions. I know that some of you are considering entering crews for the first time and are a little worried about the standard, as far as I’m concerned as long as they are competent re boat handling they are VERY welcome, and you never know who they might beat – even if they don’t get selected in the boat type they did the trial in, there may be other opportunities as we have never managed to field a full team, so this is our main aim for 2007 (apart from beating upriver). The emphasis at the JIRR event is participation, having said that, the standard of the winning cres is very high, and the GB team selectors look at all the results to see fi there is any talent they haven’t yet spotted.
Will you ALL please respond to this email by Friday 16th, letting me know the following:
• Crews to be entered for trials
• Crews to be considered for selection which can’t make trials
• Offers of help for the trials
Even if you don’t want to participate in the JIRR, please let me know that you have received this email so that I am sure I am contacting all the clubs/schools in Downriver. Many Thanks Ruth Hatton

16th February 2007 Henley Fours and Eights Head has now been cancelled due to adverse river conditions. See Henley Rowing Club website.

15th February 2007 The draw for Henley Fours & Eights Head has now been published. The race take place, weather permitting, on Saturday 17th February in 3 divisions at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm respectively. Full details can be found on the Henley Rowing Club website. Staines have a single crew racing, a WS2 8 starting at number 251 in division 3. Brunel University also have the following crews entered : Div1: S2 4- 'A',   S2 4- 'B',   S3 4+   Div2: S4 4+   Div3: S4 8+

13th February 2007 Bob Slade emails again ----- Staines Boat Club has just received a cheque for £1000 from Staines Round Table No.21. The money, given as a grant, will be used to purchase 3 pairs of sculling blades for the young juniors. Our thanks go to Dorian Mead - Community Services Chairman and all the good people at Staines Round Table No.21.

13th February 2007 Bob Slade emails ----- The gym at Magna Carta School is closed for half term and boiler repairs. I have just found this out, so apologies to all the people who turned up on Monday Feb 12th. This also means that Wednesday Feb. 14th gym session will not take place. We start again next week on Monday and Wednesday and trust that the heating plus the effort will be "HOT". Cheers, Bob td.

12th February 2007 The results for Hampton Head which took place on Saturday have been published by category and overall. Staines results show the MSch/J4x coming 31st overall (5th of 6) in 8 mins 45.5 secs and the MJ14 4x+ coming 97th overall (6th of 12) in 10mins 1.2 secs. The SWPS WJ16 4x came 70th overall (3rd of 6) in 9 mins 31.8.

10th February 2007 It seems that a member of the public spotted 4 naked oarsmen out in a boat this week in the freezing conditions on the Thames at Staines. A photograph was taken which has made its way to the latest edition of the Staines and Egham News. We can confirm that no SBC members took part in this escapade and the finger has been pointed squarely at Royal Holloway College BC. A female SBC member who spotted them from Staines Bridge confirmed they were coxless but she concedes that she might have been mistaken due to the cold weather!!

9th February 2007 From the Thames Regional Rowing Council website ----- Coaching Qualifications - Meeting at Marlow on 4th March -- The TRRC is organising a meeting on behalf of the National Coaching Committee, for all Assessors, Tutors, Mentors and Verifiers in the region (including dry instructor award holders). We are hoping that all our current Tutors and Assessors will be able to attend, as well as anyone who is interested in becoming one. There are currently over 180 coaches within the region, who hold either Bronze, Silver or Gold Coaching awards. If the coach education system is not to grind to a halt due to a lack of interest, we need to recruit more educators from this pool of talent. Anybody wishing to become a tutor is urged to attend (must be L3/bronze qualified). The meeting will be held at Marlow Rowing Club on Sunday 4th March at 2pm. The region is also starting a formal waiting list for those wanting to attend Level 2 courses and above. Coaches and rowers who are interested in attending any level of coaching course are asked to apply to their Coaching Development Officer; copying in Richard Phillips the Regional Coaching Committee representative. Thames Upriver CDO - sarah.birch(at)ara-rowing.org -- Regional Coaching Committee Rep - coaching(at)thames-rrc.org

6th February 2007 Secretary, Murray Litvak writes ----- STAINES AMATEUR REGATTA 2007 -- Its that time of the year again, when everything kicks off for the next regatta. Would SAR committee members please advise me at sarsec@otterproperty.co.uk when they are available to meet between now and the end of the month. Thanks, Murray

6th February 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails again ----- Good luck to all crews racing this weekend. The SBC juniors and SWPS girls are at Hampton on Saturday (draw here) whilst the SBC women's squad and Brunel men are heading up to Bedford on Sunday (draw here).

6th February 2007 Adam Gill advises ----- The draw for Bedford has been published. Because of the lack of racing over the winter (due to poor conditions), they have a full event this year, so lots of competition, particularly in the eights. Each status is split across divisions across the day; the eight will be racing with three crews in division 7 at 4pm, but the four will be racing on their own with men's crews in division 4. The Brunel men are also racing S2 coxless, S4 coxed and S4 eight.

6th February 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- I had a call this morning from the Staines & Egham News. They'd had a photo handed in of some naked guys carrying a boat near Staines Railway Bridge yesterday. They rang me as they thought it might have something to do with SBC but it turns out it was RHULBC doing a photoshoot for a charity calendar. Any volunteers for getting their kit off for the 2007/08 SBC calendar???

6th February 2007 Bob Slade emails a reminder regarding Trisha Corless's talk "The Eye  of the Tiger" on Thursday 8th February at 8.30pm in the clubhouse with an invitation to all.

6th February 2007 Vice Captain, Di Gill reminds us ----- Given the recent happenings, please read the ARA Avian Flu advice and the advice on the safety pages. A copy of the ARA advice is attached. This is very logical and states that all equipment and kit should be cleaned after use, hands (and drinks bottles) washed with soap and, where possible and practical, landing stages should be regularly washed down. "Think twice about putting your hands down to push off".

30th January 2007 Our Secretary, Murray Litvak sends this news from Thames Regional Rowing Council's Div 14 Rep, John Biddle ----- Dear All, having finally managed to get a list of email addresses for all the clubs in Division 14, please be advised of issues which may affect your club. There are two points related to Juniors you should be aware of. Following a recent Thames Regional Rowing Council meeting a change to the Upriver/Downriver split for the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta was agreed as follows: Upriver/Downriver split --- For the purposes of the JIRR only, please note that the boundary has been shifted upstream to Shepperton Lock – this is because last year Downriver did not manage to field a full team, and so the boundary has been shifted again to try and make sure that both TRRC teams have a full complement of Juniors. This means that the following clubs within division 14 move from Upriver to Downriver ----- St George's College, Weybridge Ladies, Cranmore, Walton, Weybridge and Halliford School. As you may be aware, Nigel Weare did not stand for re-election as the Upriver Rep this year and so Upriver needs a Junior representative, and someone to organise the JIRR team. If anyone in your clubs would be interested in taking on this role please let me know. I have attached a ‘job description’ for a Junior Rep, which gives a brief outline of the responsibilities. I appreciate that this only affects part of the division following the split as identified above.

Veteran rowing ---
To keep you updated the veterans commission has finally met, and there is a proposal to run a "Veterans training day" with video analysis, lectures etc and potentially coaching from a top name on the Saturday before the National Veteran Championships. At this stage the likely venue is Nottingham with a circa 9.30am KO, and completion around 4pm. Cost would be in the region of £20/25 per person. Please could you pass this on to your veterans, so we can identify whether there is any interest for such an event to be run. Feedback would be useful by the end of February. Regards John Biddle (Div 14 Rep
).

30th January 2007 Bob Slade writes ----- I am promoting a series of motivational talks in the SBC clubhouse starting on Thursday 8th February at 8.30pm. They will be called "The Eye  of the Tiger" and the first talk will be given by our very own star, Trisha Corless. I invite all and any rowers/athletes and club members, supporters  etc. along  to hear positive inputs to achieving success on the water.

30th January 2007 From the Thames Regional Rowing Council website ----- The National Veterans Commission is proposing to hold a training day at the NWSC in Nottingham on the 16th June 2007. The day, which would be open to veteran rowers of all ages and abilities, would run from around 9:20am to 4pm, and comprise of on water sessions, lectures and video analysis, with the possibility of top-level coaches providing their services. The cost is likely to be in the region of £20 per person and at this stage the organisers are seeking a rough idea on numbers, along with any views from veteran rowers on venue, content, cost and timing. If you are interested or have any suggestions on how to make the day a success, please talk to your TRRC div rep or contact the Veteran rep on council, Murray Litvak at veterans@thames-rrc.org.

29th January 2007 Ali Lake emails ----- My friend Natalie who did Pubs and Clubs with me last year is selling her car, could you please put the details on the website for me!

29th January 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- River conditions have improved greatly over the weekend and I expect to be able to remove Yellow Boards very soon. Given the current weather forecast, all squads should certainly be able to train at Staines this coming weekend.

29th January 2007 Bob Slade writes ----- Thank you to all the rowers, coaches, coordinators, supporters and especially to the mums-n-dads of the juniors for your help and support during our "exile" from the river at Dorney Lake. Special thanks go to Adam Gill for the fantastic job done on boat bookings, organisation of towing etc. (don't know how much his next phone bill will be). On all your behalfs, I would like to thank all the people up at Dorney Lake for the the welcome they gave to SBC and in particular for the way they coped with the avalanche of clubs and boats that descended upon them in the last few weeks.

26th January 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- With the river continuing to fall plus a good weather forecast for the next seven days it looks like we'll be on Yellow Boards soon.

26th January 2007 According to the Lower Thames Study (LDS), a planned re-profile (deep dredge) of the Thames in Staines has been abandoned since it has been discovered that this stretch is the natural habitat of the Depressed River Mussel which is an endangered species protected by the EC Wildlife Directive. (Note this has nothing to do with the Depressed River Muscles of SBC oarsmen which are abundant in the sunshine of April following 6 months of sporadic winter training). Other controversial flooding issues may be found on the Jubilee River website.

25th January 2007 Congratulations go today to Roger Pailes who celebrates his birthday. Roger does not want his age to be known but is active and well although it is believed that he will be travelling more by bus next year!

24th January 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle writes again ----- Update on Conditions: The river is no longer on Floodwatch status at Staines and river levels are continuing to fall although last night's snow may slow this. Red boards are still on display at both locks - I'll update you further as soon as the situation changes.

24th January 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle asks that this piece from the Tideway Slug be posted here ----- A warning to those on the Tideway to be careful in the current strong stream conditions - especially when the wind is up, as even the most experienced crew can easily be taken by surprise. Reports suggest that a quad from Mortlake got rather wet after hitting Barnes Bridge on Sunday when the swirl off the bridge caught them out. Happily all four crew members were rescued by an accompanying launch, but not without a little drama - as the boat broke between the bow seat and the two seat, and one crew member was swept a few yards down stream. As this can happen to crews with experienced steers who know the Tideway, clubs visiting from up-river who are unfamiliar with the vagaries of tidal water should be doubly careful and pay particular heed to the non-stopping zones around the bridges. Be careful.

23rd January 2007 Julian Blackman writes ----- A few ex-members (myself / Dom South / Bonny South) and one current member (Duncan Speight) are participating in the Three Peaks Challenge in September this year. This challenge is to climb the three highest mountains in the UK (Ben Nevis, Scotland / Scafell Pike, England / Snowdon, Wales) in 24 hours. We are undertaking this challenge to raise money for the National Deaf Children's Society. NDCS is the only UK charity solely dedicated to the support of all deaf children and young people, their families and professionals working with them. Three babies are born deaf in the UK every day and 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents with little experience of deafness. Deafness makes it harder for children to learn to communicate and many families will face challenges in establishing good communication with their deaf child. Our target is to raise £5000.00, so if any Boat Club members would like to help by sponsoring us, we have a page set-up on www.justgiving.com and it can be found at the following address: http://www.justgiving.com/hillbillies. Thanks and very best regards, Julian.

15th January 2007 From the Thames Regional Rowing Council website ----- Junior Rowing Questionaire -- The TRRC would like represntatives from all clubs in the region, which currently cater for juniors, to provide the following information. Please fill in our questionaire about the events offered to juniors at the National Championships / JIRR and give us your views on a separate junior Champs. The Information will be fed into the JIRC's review of the junior events offered at National Championships.

14th January 2007 Congratulations go to Roland Wood who celebrated his 50th birthday on Wednesday and attended a surprise birthday party at the clubhouse last evening.

12th January 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Just a reminder that if you've attended one of Duncan's Safety Briefs over the past year then you need to let him know by e-mail ASAP as he is currently compiling a list for our Water Safety Audit. If anyone feels that they need further information regarding either river/boathouse safety or more information regarding the navigation rules of the Staines stretch then please contact Duncan. 12th January 2007 Terry Moore emails ----- Has any one seen the cross bar for the leg press?  It was last seen before it was moved for the Plub Pudding lunch.  If anyone knows where it went, please can they either let me know or put it in/next to the leg press.  Thank you

11th January 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle writes ----- IMPORTANT - I am unhappy to report that yet another sculling boat has been damaged on its rack due to carelessness and no one has owned up to it. Claire Ansley-Watson's Aylings (yellow cover by the hedge) has had a hole punctured in it and where the hole is has effectively written off the boat. If anyone knows anything about this damage then it would be appreciated if they let me know as all damage to equipment must be reported. Can I also remind everyone that all sculling boats on outdoor racks should be secured at BOTH ends.

11th January 2007 Membership Secretary, Cath Blake writes ----- I have amended the membership form for SBC, in light of the new constitution which states that we do not have to propose or second a member anymore in order for them to join the club. See Membership Page.

10th January 2007 Jeremy Pollen emails ----- My grandma found this photograph the other day of the Burway crew who won the Boxing Day race in 1978. The moustached chap in the middle is my dad who stroked the eight and the moustache chap to left is John Biddle.

9th January 2007 Captain, Craig Twaddle writes ----- Latest from the EA (yesterday) is Red Boards at all locks and expected to remain so for the rest of this week.

5th January 2007 Safety Adviser, Duncan Speight has amended the Water Safety Plan to include the following changes. Everyone at the club is required to know the plan which is always available for inspection and download on the Safety Page. Please read it thoroughly.

New members & Juniors: Junior members and novices are required to either prove they are able to meet the minimum Water Safety Code requirements (to swim at least 50m in light clothing, competence underwater, in treading water and being able to swim on front and back is considered minimum requirements) or need to wear a life jacket while they are on the water until they are able to do so.
When taking new novices (both adult and junior) on to the water coaches should ask all crew members if they are confident without a life jacket.  In the event that a participant requires a life jacket a suitable example should be provided.

When taking to the water ALL crews need to log in and out using the white board on the boat house doors.  Crew members, boat and time out and in should be recorded.

When coaches take out the launch the following equipment needs to go out with the coach;
a) A sound signalling device (capable of attracting attention over a distance of 200 metres).
b) Simple handholds fixed to the side of the launch to provide assistance to any person being rescued and provide self help should the driver fall overboard.
c) A sharp knife with carrying sheath
d) A paddle
e) An anchor and line appropriate to local conditions
f) Engine cut-out lanyard device (kill-cord)
g) A proprietary "throw line" or a "grab line" (min 15 metres) with a large knot tied in one end to assist throwing.
h) Life rings and approved life jackets or buoyancy aids.
i) Thermal blankets.
j) A baler for inflatable style launches, a suitable inflation pump and spare inflation valve

4th January 2007 Think you're tough? This offer from Luke Wilson ----- Attached is a picture of me on lower slopes of Mt Blanc during Nordic Ski training, proof that SBC is international! (it was minus 10, with a 30mph wind, understandably I stood behind a mountain hut to get pic!) The reason I write is to see if there is any interest in the Birkebeiner race which takes place in Norway on the 17th March. It is a 54km race across the mountains (see below). Myself and a friend intend to compete and I wondered if anyone was interested from SBC? No expereice is required, however you will require a few days preparation to learn the basics. See also the website http://www.birkebeiner.no/renn_eng/ Please can you get in touch if you are interested. Luke

Commemorating the Birkebeiners' Saga

The Birkebeinerrennet was inspired on a historic account which is very well know for the Norwegians. Around the year 1200 AD, Norway was practically in a state of civil war, with many rivals fighting for the control of the country. The two main factions were the Baglers, a powerful dinasty from Østerdalen, and the Birkebeiners, which were corageous but very poor. The word Birke-Beiner (Birch-Leg) points that those people were so poor that they had to tie bark of the birch trees around their legs as foot-wear.

Birkebeiner king Håkon III Sverresson died in 1204 leaving only one baby son, Håkon Håkonsson, as the heir to his throne. The Baglers just needed to get rid of that baby and the whole Norway would belong to them. The Birkebeiners needed to save baby Håkon Håkonsson. On Christmas Day in 1205 the two best Birkebeiner skiers set off with the baby prince on a dangerous voyage through the Norwegian mountains to escape from the Baglers and take the young prince to safety in the city of Trondheim.

Thanks to the Birkebeiner's brabery, the baby survived and became King Håkon Håkonsson IV of Norway. During his reign, King Håkon ended the period of civil wars in Norway and brought stability to the country. Håkon Håkonsson died in December 1263 in Kirkwall, the Orkney Islands, and was taken back to Norway in 1264.

The race is a 54km Classic style race from Rena to Lillehammer which has run every year since 1932.

4th January 2007 Safety Adviser, Duncan Speight writes ----- Can ALL people that have attended at least one of the safety briefings please let me know ASAP as we need this information to be recorded for the Water Safety Audit.  If anyone feels that they need further information regarding either river/boat house safety or more information regarding the navigation rules of the Staines stretch please contact me and I will arrange another safety briefing in the next month.  Thanks for your help Duncan.
