28th December 2006 Andrew Crawford sends this fascinating document (5Mb) about the take up of the Conibeare style of rowing by Staines Boat Club in 1953 with some success. Written by then Captain W. Graeme Galbraith, here is an extract - 'This is the summary I used to give in the Boathouse after which we practiced a point at a time. 1. Hook on with the knees together and hands together. 2. Great crescendo of power. 3. All hell at the finish. 4. Shove on the brakes. 5. Heads up and feather late.' Perhaps we should use this as a secret strategy for winning next season!!

28th December 2006 Helge Neumeister emails this news ----- The lockkeeper has no boards showing on the lock-gates. The stream is still faster than usual, but otherwise the conditions are great.

26th December 2006 The annual Boxing Day Race against Burway Rowing Club took place this morning on the Staines stretch of the Thames, on a cloudy but dry day. The young Burway crew took an early lead and gradually pulled out a significant lead over the Staines crew, finally finishing with a 3 length advantage. See Photographs Page.

Please can everyone in the crew make contact with Ian McHugh by email or telephone a.s.a.p. to be sure that there is no confusion.  I suggest that the crew meet at the club for 10(ish) to set up the boat and finalise arrangements. Merry Christmas. Ian

21st December 2006 Tired and bored at work? Want to practice your sculling skills? Then try Extreme Rowing!

13th December 2006 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- The club has seen a reduction in the number of throw bags kept in club office and so is having to buy some more. Could everyone who uses the throw bags please just check that they've not taken one away from the club by accident. Many thanks.

11th December 2006 Captain, Craig Twaddle writes ----- Coach Jeremy Pollen came to the aid of Twickenham RC at Dorney Lake on Saturday when their trailer and van were stuck on the grass. Jeremy's solution was simple - release the handbrake on the trailer!
Thanks again to everyone who helped out at yesterday's Christmas Lunch, it was excellent.

10th December 2006 The annual Xmas Lunch took place today as well as the naming of our new Filippi 4- 'Tedward' after Staines stalwart Ted Dyos. A big thank you to all those who put in the hard work arranging, cooking and serving such an excellent meal. Sadly the Plum Pudding races had to be called off due to high river levels but this was replaced by a team quiz instead hosted by quizmaster, Craig Twaddle. Xmas puddings (and new anoraks) were given to the winning team!! See Photographs Page.

8th December 2006 Social Secretaries, Jo and Katie email ----- IT'S CHRISTMAS well almost.......don't forget the Christmas Party this Saturday at the club 7pm, dust off those dancing shoes and get yourselves down to the club. ALSO not forgetting the naming of Tedward the new Filippi 4- to take place at the club 12.30 Sunday 10th with Special Guest Ted Dyos, followed by Christmas Lunch at 1pm. Unfortunatly due to the recent weather conditions there will be no plum pudding races this year. There will however be a seasonal quiz instead, so come to lunch and stay for the quiz, suggested team sizes 4 (coxless) or 5 (coxed) to keep in with the spirit of plum puddings. Prizes given to the victors. Katie & Jo

6th December 2006 Captain, Craig Twaddle writes ----- When putting out rubbish can you please make sure, where possible, that the black bags are placed inside the wheelie bins. One member had to tidy up the area recently as an animal had got into the bags and rubbish was strewn about. There is also now a recycling container by the bar for bottles and cans. Please make use of this as it frees up room in the wheelie bins and also Roger Moulding is kind enough to take the bottles and cans to the recycling centre at Sainsbury's.

5th December 2006 Social Secretaries, Jo and Katie request ----- PLUM PUDDINGS & CHRISTMAS LUNCH............... For those of you that want to come along and join in but haven't done so please sign up using THIS FORM now. 4th December 2006 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails again ----- The draw for this Saturday's Walton Small Boats Head can be found here. Obviously if current river conditions do not improve then the event may be in doubt. We will post updates when we get them. The organisers say they will announce a decision by 12 noon on Thursday.

4th December 2006 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Members may have noticed two new additions to our fleet. They are two Aquajog sculling trainers for use by those trying out sculling for the first time. A big thanks to Bob Slade for finding them and also for funding one of them himself. Normal booking rules apply, i.e. through the Captain of Boats. Just to point out that they came with the names 'Happy' and 'Dopey', i.e. they're not named after anyone at SBC! ;-)
The new water heater will be fitted this week and so hot water will be restored - apologies for the delay. There will also be a new gas fire fitted in the bar area. This will come in very handy after winter morning outings and will also give a good ambience around the bar on cold winter evenings. Thanks to John Morrison for organising these improvements.

In accordance with our Water Safety Plan I am therefore not allowing small boats (singles & doubles/pairs) out on the river until conditions improve. I will keep you updated as necessary. 13th November 2006 Bob Slade writes ----- We are proposing to hold a Training Camp in April 2007. Logistics can be worked out re: lodging and facilities etc. Suggested timescale of training camp, arrive Friday noon, overnight Friday/Saturday, depart afternoon on Sunday. I need to know from squad coordinators plus individuals who can make it. (this info is needed in 7 days MAX)

13th November 2006 Ian Grant reports ----- Two men's crew were competing up at Kingston. There was a win for the S2 4- with a long battle with the Kingston/Walbrook opposition. After catching them quickly at the start, the crew failed to make the push through and ended up in a side by side battle most the way down the tricky course, including going through narrow arches Kingston Road bridge. In the second division, the Nv 2x had a good row, also catching one of the opposition boats in front and looking like taking home the Nov Win, but they unfortunately suffered the only penalty of the day, details to be confirmed, to miss victory by just 2 secs. Full results can be found on the Kingston RC website.

13th November 2006 Jim Pettitt sends this report ----- A huge field of 500 entries turned out on a fine Autumnal morning for the Pangbourne Junior Sculls but by lunchtime it had clouded over, the wind got up and it was perishing! Top marks go to Emma Corless in the J16 1x, who had a terrific 1st place in a field of 15 starters. Andrew Frost & Tom Oades had another excellent row in the J14 2x, though had to settle for 2nd place to a very impressive row from a Gloucester pair in a field of 11. Jonny Pettitt also rowed a fine race to finish 3rd in a field of 10 in the J12 1x. Another notable row was that of Gareth Jones in the J15 1x. In a large field of 36 scullers Gareth finished 4th, just 0.6 secs off 3rd place and only 5 secs off 1st place. A special mention for Rachel Lafbery. Rachel has missed most of the past 12 months with a knee injury sustained at this very event last year. She put in a good row and looks to be well on the way to race fitness again, well done! It is worth me making another observation, which wound up many spectators and competitors alike. The event was marred by some atrocious and sometimes non-existent marshalling along with inept organisation, leading many juniors, including some as young as J9, to be boated in the bitter cold for up to 3 hours! Full results can be found on the Mikrotime website. Also see Photographs Page.

11th November 2006 President, Ian McHugh writes ----- Remembrance Sunday - we ask members who happen to be at the club tomorrow, Sunday 12th November, to observe a two minute silence at 11am. Boats out on the river are also encouraged to stop. The silence is intended to remember particularly those who have died or suffered injury in the service of the United Kingdom in the two World Wars and many other conflicts since. Thank you.

11th November 2006 Pangbourne Junior Sculls took place today with some good racing from both Staines and SWPS crews. Full results will be found on the Mikrotime website shortly. Also see Photographs Page.

11th November 2006 Rob Oades sends this link to his photos of last Sunday's sculling ladder.

10th November 2006 Bob Slade sends this message ----- The next sculling ladder will take place on Sunday morning, November 26th. On water by 8am, start at 8-30am. Plan is to start at the County Stone and race upto M25 bridge. People needed to support the ladder; 4 marshals - spotters, 1 starter - timing, 1/2 finish - timing PS. comments, recommendations from safety people welcome Cheers, Bob td.

10th November 2006 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Good luck to all crews racing this weekend. The SBC Juniors and SWPS Girls are racing at Pangbourne Sculls on Saturday (start order) and the Senior Men are racing in a 4- and a 2x at Kingston Small Boats Head (start order).

10th November 2006 Kristina Frost writes ----- The Tesco voucher scheme is now finished in the stores.  Could everyone check their pockets for any loose ones please as I want to send in our total at the end of next week.  The collection box will be in club.

9th November 2006 Jenny Page writes ----- Just a quick message, somehow through my rapidly advancing senility I have managed to mislay my SBC black fleece gilet (medium) which although I haven’t worn much I am most attached to! So various souls have helpfully suggested that I ask you to post something on the site to help find it….so just wondering if you could please post something on the website seeking the assistance of fellow club members to track down said article? As ever there is the distinct possibility that I may have left it in a boat hatch! Boats I have frequented of late include Len Neville, Bob the Dog, Graham Carey and John Walton – so please could those who possess a gilet, please double check their kit drawers to check that their gilet has not accidentally replicated itself and they now posses two! Alternatively if you find something dark lurking in one of the above boat hatches – please can you see whether its my missing kit PLEASE!! Pint of beer/glass of wine from the bar for info. leading to its re-capture! Many thanks, Jen.

9th November 2006 Terry Moore advises that the draw for Kingston Head which takes place this Sunday 12th November, is available on the Kingston RC website. Staines have a Nov 2x and a S2 4- entered with starting nos.8 & 240 respectively. The race is in 2 divisions at 10.00 hours and 1300 hours.

9th November 2006 An enormously loud crashing sound was heard about 8.00pm last evening coming from the other side of the river to the club. One oarsman thought it was an explosion! It turned out to be a refrigerated articulated lorry, slightly taller unfortunately than the underside of the railway bridge it was going under, slicing it's roof off and was seen with the refridgerant gas gushing skywards. Captain Craig Twaddle advised Network Rail of the possibility of damage to the bridge.

7th November 2006 With winter training now in full swing and talk of long rowing and ergo sessions in the air, here is a timely reminder taken from the ARA website ----- A short break for extension stretches is advised after more than one hour of rowing or 30 minutes of ergometer training. This involves lying face down and pushing the head and shoulders off the ground until the arms are straight, arching the back backwards without causing any pain and holding the stretch for 20 seconds.

5th November 2006 The draw for the Fuller's Head of the River Race that takes place at 1.30pm on Saturday 18th November, has now been published on the official website. The S24- Staines/Grey College crew are starting at No. 172 and boating from London RC.

4th November 2006 President, Ian McHugh writes ----- Remembrance Sunday - we ask members who happen to be at the club next Sunday 12th November, to observe a two minute silence at 11am. Boats out on the river are also encouraged to stop. The silence is intended to remember particularly those who have died or suffered injury in the service of the United Kingdom in the two World Wars and many other conflicts since. Thank you.

3rd November 2006 Captain, Craig Twaddle requests ----- Would any members who have keys to the ladies changing rooms please return them to the club. Thanks.

2nd November 2006 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Just a reminder to everyone that Plum Puddings this year is on Sunday December 10th, that's the day after Walton Small Boats. Please note your diaries.

2nd November 2006 Nick Hadwen writes ----- This years Sporting Predictions Competition has ended and the results extract is shown below. The 1st and 2nd place winners SUE and NICK BARNEY have also donated their winnings to the club. This means another £100 to SBC so a big thanks to them! Hopefully next year we can run a bigger event and don't think you cant have a go if you know nothing about sport...(just look at the results - sorry Rob) Its all about having a bit of fun and after the major events a current position commentary is sent out. Fancy a go in 2007 drop me a line at nickhadwen@tiscali.co.uk.
Greetings fellow Predictors, Well, all good things come to an end. And this years fun packed prediction league is no different. And so to the scores on the doors. We have a winner. Its been an epic battle akin to Henman vs Murray, Schumacher vs Alonso and Materazzi vs Zidane. But at the end of this titanic struggle there was just one point in it, so congratulations to Sue Barney for winning the inaugural predictions event. (11 was the highest in the work one I was in as well) 1st prize was 50% of the pot, 2nd price 20%, and third prize 10% with 20% to the club. So the Barneys win £55 and £22 followed by a cracking split third prize four ways at £2.75 each and another £22 for the club. (Stewards enquiries have 24hours...) All that's leaves me to do is thank you all for your participation and I hope we can do it all again in 2007 (but would suggest that we all brush up on women's tennis as it seems to be a collective weakness!) S Barney 11, N Barney 10, S Morton 9, A Douglas 9, A Frost 9, R Frost 9, C Fearon 8, J Dunlop 7, R Dunlop 7, T Blackman 7, R Oades 6.

30th October 2006 The full results of the Upper Thames Fours and Small Boats Head that took place on Sunday have now been published on the Mikrotime website. The results for the Staines crews are as follows - WS24x (5th of 5) 12 mins 13.6 secs, WS24- (4th of 5) 12 mins 43.4 secs, WS34x (6th of 7) 12 mins 5.3 secs, WS34+ (13th of 16) 13 mins 2.9 secs. See the photo on the Tideway Slug and the ones at onlyrowingphotos.com.

30th October 2006 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Due to the hot water boiler being out of action there will be NO hot water for showers etc in the clubhouse until further notice. Apologies for any incovenience. A new boiler will be installed as soon as is feasible.

28th October 2006 The gentlemen's changing room and toilets have had a thorough scrub, clean and tidy up by none other than our Captain, Craig Twaddle. Craig has spent most of this afternoon dressed in rubber gloves and surrounded with cleaning materials. Be sure to thank him next time you are at the club for what he calls his 'beyond the call of duty' actions.

27th October 2006 Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Head Coach Bob Slade hosted a very useful get-together last night for all the squad coordinators and coaches (Senior, Veteran & Junior). Plans for the next 12 months were discussed and everyone was able to present their aims, objectives and equipment requirements. The various squads training together more often is being encouraged and the "sculling ladder" will make a return. Obviously there are bound to be times when there are issues with equipment availability but if we all communicate with each other then compromises that keep everyone happy will be reached. Many thanks also to Bob for providing the fish suppers!

27th October 2006 Captain, Craig Twaddle writes ----- Just a reminder that during Winter Training certain squads have the use of the clubhouse on certain nights, details here. If it's not "your night" and you come down early to do an ergo, for example, can you please make sure you have finished well before the relevant squad is due to start as they obviously need to set things up beforehand. Thanks.

27th October 2006 Sue Jutley of the University of Westminster writes ----- I am undertaking a study into the physiology of rowers, and I am looking for willing volunteers. In brief, the session lasts approximately an hour and I will be taking various body measurements as well as identifying your body composition using the Bod Pod system - please see the attached Information Sheet for full details. Testing will take place in London at the Human Performance Laboratory at the Universities Cavendish Campus building – next door to the BT tower-please see the Information sheet for full address details too. The club has a new microwave - thanks to Helen Lafbery for collecting. 23rd October 2006 Jim Pettitt sends this report ----- Saturday saw the Weybridge Silver Sculls and Staines made a terrific start to the Head Season, scooping top prize in 4 events. The high wind and regular rain showers made for some testing conditions.  First up were Steve Ballantine and Gideon Shalom, braving the fierce elements to win in the VNOV 2x.  Emma Corless, starting last of a 13-strong field, overtook most of them to win the WJ16 1x in superb style. Tom Oades and Andrew Frost also broke clear of their rivals in the J14 2x, winning by a country mile. Cap'n Craig Twaddle had an agonising wait, having secured the fastest time in his category during the blustery morning division.  He then had to wait until the final division, with conditions having improved greatly, the wind dropping and rain abating before finally finding he'd won the VNOV 1x. A good haul of pots bodes well for the rest of the season.  Well done to all who took part.

22nd October 2006 Rob Oades sends this link to his photos of yesterday's Weybridge Silver Sculls. Full results can be found on the official website.

18th October 2006 Our new president, Ian McHugh has had 50 club umbrellas made in green and white complete with the Staines logo, and very good they look too. Ian says that they are free if members contribute just £12 to club funds. Ian has graciously donated the cost of manufacturing them so all your money will go straight to the club. There are limited numbers available with several sold to the few remaining people at the club yesterday. I forecast that they will sell out at the weekend so please bring your £12s down and see Ian at 8.00am on Saturday or Sunday or failing that, email him to reserve one for you. I will post a photograph soon but I will have to wait until it stops raining!!!

16th October 2006 Captain of Boats, Robin Dunlop emails ----- Could I ask all who use the ergo's down the club to take a little time to look after them. Ideally the next time you use one could you take a screwdriver open up the 4 screws on the 'fan cage' and then vacuum out all the little blocked holes and the fan itself. Pop the cage back on and put all 4 screws back. When you have finished using the machine wipe it down, particularly the stainless steel seat runner - please leave it as you would wish to find it, clean and working. If the unit requires batteries they take AA and are easily replaced. Thank you. You will note that each ergo now has a number. I should like you to note any fault down along with the number of the ergo and drop me an email and I'll let you know how to sort the problem out  - thanks Robin

4th October 2006 Robin Dunlop reports ----- The Marlow Rowers Revenge took place last Sunday. Obviously we had the good old British weather to contend with, sun, thunder storms, lashing rain and howling wind making the overall times down on last year. Clearly some needed to work abit harder, I caught  2 chaps having a chat as they ambled around the running course!! Gids reckoned he had a puncture and his chain came off twice, fairly stretched given he was using Duncan's Italian racing bike so he'll have work on better excuses for next year! Big arrhh to Andy who after all the training managed to get a puncture and retired doh!! . With over 400 entries we faired well. Lets have some female entries next year!!
Results: Marc Lorenzi 1.34.52 33rd / Robin Dunlop 1.37.52 62nd / Steve Ballentine 1.38.58 66th / Nick Hadwen 1.44.54 126th / Joe Wood 1.49.04 173rd / Gary Lovejoy 1.59.36 283rd / Gideon Shalom 2.09.55 348th / Andy Gillies RETIRED

27th September 2006 Secretary, Murray Litvak advises ----- ATTENTION ALL ROWERS ~ SENIORS, JUNIORS AND VETS - Due to a number of factors it has become necessary for the Committee to establish supplementary safety provisions in night time rowing. Therefore with immediate effect the following will apply.
1. Lights will be fitted and operational 2 hours before “lighting up time”
2. No paddling above Staines Road Bridge.
3. Hi vis bibs to worn by bow and cox in stern loaded boats, bow and stroke in coxless boats. This also applies to scullers.
4. On the white board on the boathouse doors please jot down, the name of the boat going out, who is in the crew and a contact phone number. Wipe out the details when you return. The last crew coming back in to check that all boats are returned, otherwise call the contact number. The last point avoids “guess the owner of the car” game. At the committee meeting next week, further revisions may be made to ensure that ALL members row and scull safely. Please bear in mind the key to activity is safety, these provisions are for the benefit of all. Any crews failing to adhere may be sanctioned!!!

11th September 2006 Boat Maintenance Officer, Ian Grant emails ----- Can everyone please note that this coming Sunday, 17th September, Robin and I will be sorting out all the blades and riggers in the boathouse. 6th September 2006 Social Secretaries, Anna & Di write ----- This is a busy weekend for all with the Pubs and Clubs Regatta, so can all members when using the club for crew training, please be considerate for other crews competing. This mainly centres around equipment; please ONLY take a boat/blades if you have booked it, and ONLY take the equipment you have booked. 5th September 2006 Liz Lake writes ----- Thank you and well done to everyone who took part in the sponsored Row on Sunday 3rd September. It was a huge success and we have managed to raise £3,500.00 so far. Although we aimed to keep the boat moving for 12 hours we eventually only managed to keep it moving for 9 hours due to the strong winds, however we hope that this will not affect the generosity of our sponsors. Out of the 47 rowers that took part, 26 of them were from Staines Boat Club and they came away with 11 of the 12 awards and raffle prizes (signed T'shirts from Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent). Katherine Cran won an award for rowing the furthest distance, a whopping 36,000 metres and; Rachel Lafbery also won an award for coxing the furthest distance an even bigger 38,000metres…Well done girls! A big thank you to all the people who came and took part in the rowing; to all the junior parents and friends who came and helped on the day. A special thanks to Mark A-W, Joe Wood and Katherine Cran for helping me collect the boat from Marlow and transport everything to and from Dorney and to Graham for taking such fabulous photographs. Also see the report on the Autism Speaks website.

5th September 2006 Anna Blackman writes ----- Hi All If anyone is able to help us on Sunday with Pubs & Clubs, that would be terrific. There will also be a little bit of pre prep needed on Saturday. The types of jobs we’ll need help with are as follows: Saturday late morning – Sandwich making and food prep, general clubhouse tidy-up and outside tidy / boat cleaning. Sunday (Regatta Day) – morning set-up, selling refreshments, bar, BBQ, bouncy castle supervision(!!), landing stage area monitoring and general helping with getting boats in & out and changing crews over etc. If you could email Di & I if you are definitely around to help, that would be great – use the sbcpartyon@hotmail.co.uk email (I can only access this in the evenings at the moment). Obviously some of you will have crews on Sunday to contend with too. We’ll come up with a more structured list of jobs by the end of the week for everyone. Finally – don’t forget the pre Pubs & Clubs Warm Up Party and DJ Dave Disco at the Club on Saturday evening, from 7.30pm. Thanks all and see you at the club soon. Anna

4th September 2006 Robin Dunlop emails ----- You may have noticed 2 new additions to our boat fleet, a Filippi 2x/- and a Filippi 4x/-. Both these boats come with excellent reputations, the 2x has a bronze medal from Athens and formley a training boat for Alan Campbell and partners down at TSS. The 4x made the final at Eton in the recent World Champs with the Australians onboard, this boat is only 3 mths old. I would like these boats to be treated with the utmost respect this is a new era for Staines BC we have never purchased high performance boats such as these before and they will be a huge asset to the club allowing crews to have the best equipment to perform at the highest level possible. They are not for Sunday jaunts down the river. These boats are to be kept in the best condition possible and to that end their initial milage will be managed. They will offer revenue should we not have the athletes to fill them and they will potentially attract the more abled athlete should they wish to join a club in our area. They will offer some inspiration to our current athletes that given the correct level of performance these boats will be their reward. Use is by express permission of the Captain, Captain of Boats and Head Coach.

4th September 2006 Rob Oades sends this link to photos of yesterday's sponsored 'Row for Autism Research' at Dorney and writes ----- Please post this link on the SBC web site - pictures of the early shift of the Row for Autism, started at 6.00 am, phew what a start to a Sunday but for a great cause. Well done to Liz for the organisation. PS don't tell the coach's - the Juniors are supposed to be resting !!! Mark Lafbery also sends these - pic 1 (am) - pic2 (after). Report and more photographs will follow this evening.

29th August 2006 Rob Oades sends this report on behalf of the junior squad from Gloucester and Ross V&J Regattas -----

The Bank Holiday week-end saw the Junior Squad finish off their summer season with entries at the Gloucester and Ross Regatta's - both held this year at the Ross on Wye Rowing Club, due to road works preventing access to the Gloucester Club.

Gloucester Regatta took place on the Saturday and the squad performed well against strong competition. Making their debut's for the club were new members Shaun and Ryan Sullivan sculling at J15 and J13 respectively (Ryan a year up). Both brothers performed well in their first ever races and we look forward to them racing next year. In all we reached three finals and won two - Charlotte Morrison and Emma Parkes in the WJ16 2x and Tom Oades and Andrew Frost in the unbeaten MJ13 2x. Charlotte also reached the final of the WJ16 event but was disqualified for going into her opponents lane and forcing her into the side. A harsh decision.

The Sunday saw Ross Regatta Junior and Veterans Regatta take place over the same course. The Squad again performed well against all the main rowing clubs in the area and reached four finals, including the MJ16 4x- final after a canvas win against Runcorn Rowing Club in the semi-final. Could we finish the season with 4 more victories.

Charlotte Morrison again had reached the final of the WJ16 1x and she was determined to put right the previous evenings disqualification. By the time she came around the bend on the River Cam's 750m course, Charlotte was at least 5 lengths ahead of the opposition and cruised home. A similar result was achieved in the WJ16 2x final again partnered by Emma Parkes.

The next final was the MJ13 2x final with Tom Oades and Andrew Frost again in fine form. Could they win and remain undefeated at their J13 level. You bet they could easily beating a double from Evesham. This pair have had a great season five wins from five at J13 plus one at J14.

This saw the Juniors total victories for the season stand at 49. Could the MJ16 coxless quad of Nick Pollen (stroke) Rob Oades, James Kell and Tom Ryan (bow) make it the round fifty? This was the first time the lads had competed coxless and they did not disappoint. They had the stagger against them but as the rounded the bend they were a length up on the bigger Evesham crew and went on to win by 2 and a 1/2 lengths. They really wanted that victory and Tom Ryan steered a superb course.

So the season which started last October with the Weybridge Silver Sculls came to an end with a great victory. Fifty wins and a bronze medal making it the squads best season ever. Thanks must go to the coach's Jeremy Pollen, Ted Dyos and Bob "the Dog" Slade for all their hard work and to Carol Goldswain and Roy Frost as entry coordinators. We did not miss one entry this season. And of course last but not least - many thanks to all the interfering parents who have helped and supported the squad all year. Special thanks this week-end go to Mark (the torch) and Helen Lafbery who organised a fantastic BBQ for the Squad on the Saturday evening and even managed to cook Sunday Lunch also. The squad take a well deserved two week break now, before it all starts again. It will take that long for myself to recover from the pleasures of camping. Many thanks Junior Squad for a fantastic year I will not forget. Rob Oades (Snr) Also see commercial images from epsphoto.co.uk

29th August 2006 Rob Oades sends this link to the Kodak website where he has uploaded some photos from last weekend's Gloucester and Ross V&J regattas.

28th August 2006 Rob Oades writes ----- Please display on the web site this thank you letter from the Army Welfare Service for the taster session we ran for their youth club. I think it reflects very well on the club.

23rd August 2006 Rob Oades emails ----- This article was published in the Hull Daily Mail, Sports Section last night (22nd August). This was our local paper when we used to live in Hull. Looks like the name of Staines Boat Club is spreading,. ---- EAST Yorkshire may not be famed for its rowers, but two east Hull lads are determined to change that reputation. Rob and Tom Oades are now proud members of Staines Boat Club and over the past three seasons both teenagers have enjoyed varying success. Having been brought up in Faraday Street off Holderness Road, the duo moved to Sunbury on Thames, in Middlesex, back in 1999.Rob, 16, and 13-year-old Tom - who used to attend Alderman Cogan Primary School - became interested in rowing after seeing crews on the River Thames. Now, they have taken to the sport like ducks to water after deciding to try their hand at the sport.Over the past three seasons, Rob has won 16 regattas - mainly in a single scull - including wins in Staines, Molesey, Twickenham, Cambridge, Evesham and Reading. Rob has sculled at national level competing at the GB National and National Schools events in Nottingham. This season he won his novice event which now means he can row in senior events - quite an achievement for a 16-year-old competitor. Rob also competed in the Head of the River Race held over the Oxbridge boat race course on the Thames in London earlier this year. He has just completed his GCSE exams at Thamesmead School in Shepperton and hopes to Study PE and Sport in the future. Tom has also been very successful in a double scull with his rowing partner Andrew Frost. He has won ten regattas including those at Burway, Weybridge, Walton, Evesham, Windsor and Avon County. Tom and Andrew are unbeaten in their under-13s age group this year and have won events rowing a year above themselves. They hope to compete next year at the National Championships. Rob and Tom, who attend the same school, are part of a very successful Junior Squad at Staines Boat Club  and have won over 100 pots in the last three seasons.

23rd August 2006 Robin Dunlop emails ----- As an aid to training for the Marlow Rowers Revenge, a posse of riders will be leaving SBC at 8.30am on Monday 28th riding out to Marlow. Once there, we'll have a small break and then run over the RR bike course. Anyone willing to join us whether  competing for RR in October or not are welcome  to join us. Robin

22nd August 2006 Rob Oades advises that the Juniors are competing at Gloucester Regatta which takes place this Saturday plus Ross Junior and Vets Regatta the following day. The draws for Gloucester and Ross will hopefully be available soon on their respective websites.

22nd August 2006 Rob Oades emails ----- Monday 21st August saw Staines Boat Club host a very successful visit from 6 children from the Army Welfare Service Youth Club based at the Cavalry Barracks, Hounslow. The visit was organised by Revd. Debbie Oades as part of her role as Assistant Curate at The Church of the Good Shepherd, Hounslow West. The children went out in a quad and a double and got an hours taste of what the sport is all about. Rev. Deb would like to thank Captain Terry Moore for giving his permission for SBC to be involved and special thanks to all  the members / helpers who made it possible - Jeremy Pollen, Ted Dyos, Mark Lafbery, Steve Kell, Les Edwards, Rob Oades (jnr), Tom Oades, James Kell, Rachel Edwards and Rachel Lafbery.

22nd August 2006 Vice Captain, Craig Twaddle emails again ----- The Bristol Dragon Boaters have sent us an update. --- "I am writing to say thank you again for your support in our challenge earlier this year. In May a group of 21 paddlers and 7 support crew took on the great task of paddling a dragon boat from London to Bristol. We managed to complete the task in five days, this involved paddling on average for 12/13 hours a day, 33 miles each day. This would not of been possible without the help of you and people like you. I am to let you know that we managed to raise £11,000 for Cancer research."

22nd August 2006 Vice Captain, Craig Twaddle reports ----- A reminder to everyone to be extra vigilant regarding other craft on the river. Bob reports that there has been a recent increase in powered craft not obeying the navigation rules so keep your eyes peeled. -- A big thanks to John Morrison for getting the ceiling in the men's changing room repaired and to Jill Corless for trimming back the hedge. -- Finally, we hope that Jeremy Pollen has now dried out after taking "one small step" off the landing stage!

18th August 2006 Di Gill writes ----- Please could all Pubs and Clubs Coxes and Coaches remember to stick to the boat that they have booked for a session and stick to the time slot that they have selected. Some of the boats need maintenance and it makes it difficult for Ian to repair the boats if they are not there when they should be. Ian has now been down to the Club four times this week with the hope of fixing shoes and seats but keeps finding the boats have been taken out when they haven't been booked. This is particularly important for Zebedee, the Brunel boat, as Ian needs to fix the shoes which are completely ripped. Thank you, Di and Anna.

18th August 2006 Cath Moore emails ----- For the ladies: Adam wants to talk to all of us who want to row this year on Saturday 2nd September at 9.30 am! If you want to row, but cannot make this meeting - please contact sbcwomen@hotmail.com. Please tell anyone who you think may not have seen this!

18th August 2006 Terry Moore forwards this message from Mark Ansley-Watson ----- Hi All, if you have any interest in rowing or coaching at all next year please come down the club on Sat 2nd Sept 06, or if you can't let me know prior what your interest level is. We are hoping to make a serious impact on the pubs and clubs people this year and bolster the novice squads and feed people up by Xmas, so there should be plenty of people to train with. Please let anybody you know who maybe interested and get them to come down or contact me. Cheers all Mark.

18th August 2006 A reminder that tomorrow, Saturday 19th August, sees the Opening Ceremony of the World Rowing Championships at Dorney Lake. It is all free - even the car park. – See the poster.

Please help me raise the well needed money by clicking this link and giving what you can. If any of you would like to help by taking part then please contact me ASAP. Thank you Liz.x

14th August 2006 Jonathan Flynn sends this link to some photos of Duncan Speight's recent stag weekend. Please only view them if you are broad minded!

14th August 2006 Ian Grant sends his report from the Peterborough Regattas ----- A number of Men's squad crews made the trip to Peterborough for a weekend of racing. First up was Ian G in S3 1x looking for a top two finish to get through to the final but unfortunately just missed out by a foot to a Peterborough sculler after holding 2nd for most of the way. In Nv 1x Craig missed out on a place in the S-Finals by less than a canvas after putting in a last gasped burst in the last 200m, and nick being blown about in the wind a bit also missed out on going through to the S-Finals. Joe & Andrew made their 3rd appearance in a pair at S2 with some experienced crews from AK and Nottingham. Despite some minor steering issues they finished in 3rd place in the final a length behind AK and Nottingham. In the fours the S2 4+ of Andy, Nick, Terry, Damian and coxed by Mark AW unfortunately finished 4th in their heat just behind TRC, TTRC and Leicester after struggling in the strong headwind. The S4 4+ of Chris, Damian, Rob T,Rob O and Coxed by Mark AW/Rachel, finished 3rd in their heat to go through to the Repechage, but unfortunately due equipment problems had to swap boats last minute for the Rep. In this they missed out on a place in the S-finals finishing 2nd behind KCL with only 1st place going through. In the S2 4- the crew, with only 2 outings since Henley had a straight final against some strong opposition including the City of Sheffield crew beaten on the Weds of HRR.  After losing length due to a problem with a blade just after the start the crew moved slowly through the other crews to take the 2nd place behind TTRC. The contest of the day must have been the from the impromptu dance at midnight taken on by Joe W and a late entry by Ali L
The Sunday had slightly better conditions after a bit of early morning rain. In the Fours the S2 4+ had a much better race, but again just missed out on a place in the Rep by a canvas to Leicester to finish third. The S4 4+ had another good row but unfortunately missed out on a place in the Rep and finished third. In the S2 8+ made up of two S2 4's weren't able to match the three other crews and finished 4th. For the S3 2x Joe W and Ian G had a great start to take a length out of their opposition and hold on to take a place in the S-Finals. Andrew T and Mark AW didn't have a perfect start but managed had some good sculling to finish 2nd to go through to the repechage, but with some tough competition in the rep, missed out on the place in the S-Finals. In the S-Final Joe and Ian had a strong start but with 2 out of 3 crews going through, turned into a bit of four lanes after one crew had problems straight of the start. In the final the two of them had a slight lead up to half way but were unable to hold the position as two from Sudbury and Jesus College began to move away to take 1st and 2nd. In the Nv 1x Craig again missed out on a place in the S-Finals by a length and in the J16 1 x, Rob Oades pulled a win out of no-where as the third sculler in lane 1, leading their race capsized, 30m from the finish line and Rob stormed through to win.

14th August 2006 Adam Gill sends this report from the Peterborough Regattas ----- The Staines massive turned up to the Peterborough Party Regatta with many crews and the women's squad on display this time in the form of the quad. The girls were entered at Senior 2 on both days and with little training together in this combination, it was going to an interesting two days racing. Conditions were tough; there was a nasty cross-headwind causing several capsizings, crabs and collisons between crews that really should know better. In the girl's first heat on Saturday congestion at the start and the late running of the regatta meant they had to go into the race cold, with no race warmup, but only needing to come second out of four to qualify for the final, they did just that behind only a tidy Molesey crew, beating Jesus College/York and Bedford Star's juniors. In the final they were joined by Tideway Scullers and a Leicester Composite; the girls really attacked the competition, giving 'the best race of the day' (Peterborough commentary) finishing two lengths down on Molesey, and just 3/4 length behind the Tideway crew. A super result given their opposition were all established outfits.
So Sunday saw some renewed determination to clean up in their final race of the season, despite slightly sore heads from watching Joe Woods dance off in the small hours of the morning. Due to a scratching, the first heat ended up being a race for lane order of the final, which is always a tricky type of race to handle, but the girls won it, getting the best lane for the final. However, the Star juniors, who had given the girls a good run as far as 400m on Saturday, were bitter from the previous day and really up for it. This left a two horse race, with Jesus/York and UWE off the pace, and coming into the final 200m Staines were still 3/4 of a length down with a lot to do. But an almightly push saw Star rowed down, and Staines winning their final race of the season by 2 feet! Thrilling to watch again, but never good on my heart!
This leaves the girls with 6 wins from 9, from Evesham to the Metropolitan Regatta, from Henley Women's to Peterborough; from singles, doubles, fours and the quad - a grand total of 29 tankards/goblets. A fantastic set of results, and an even more fantastic experience for all, with some outstanding racing, far exceeding everyone's expectations. And somehow, I've escaped being thrown in......so far..... See Adam's photos here.

13th August 2006 Anna Blackman sends this information from the World Rowing Championships Volunteer Team ----- The entries are closed, the athletes are on their way, the grandstands are nearly ready. 13th August 2006 The now 40 year old Jeremy Pollen writes ----- I want to thank everybody who came to my birthday party last night for making it such an enjoyable and memorable evening. I had a fantastic time and it was so nice to catch up with rowing and non rowing friends that I have not seen for ages. Very special thanks to the parents who helped with all of the preparations and worked so hard making this a very special day for me, whether it was cleaning the club, serving behind the bar or clearing up afterwards, all of your efforts and hard work doesn't go unoticed. Thanks to Mark for setting up the disco with a brilliant selection of music, it went down so well and even had someone asking for his number so they could book him. Now I have got to get back to working my way through all this booze that has been brought for me. Cheers everyone Jeremy.

11th August 2006 Social Secs Di and Anna write - calling all Pubs and Clubs crews! All Pubs and Clubs crews should now have received details of training and your cox/coach (if you needed one). 7th August 2006 Captain, Terry Moore writes ----- Here is the link for the Draw for both days of Peterborough Regatta this weekend. Good luck everyone...

7th August 2006 Vice Captain, Craig Twaddle reports ----- Well done to everyone who raced at Maidenhead on Saturday. We had straight final wins in WS2 4+ (Liz Lake, Catherine Cran, Nikki Browning, Ali Lake, cox Rachel Lafbery) over Maidenhead, in WJ16 2x (Charlotte Morisson, Emma Parkes) over SWPS and in J16 1x (Rob Oades) over Eton Excelsior. There was some good racing by the other Juniors and also by the Seniors in the mixed 2xs events. In Nov 1x, yours truly won the first heat easily over Putney Town and then had a very close 2nd heat against Maidenhead with the Maidenhead sculler being disqualified at the finish line for failing to respond after several clashes. I lost my semi-final by 1.5 lengths to another Maidenhead sculler. Sir William Perkins School also had a win in WJ15 4x+ and so well done to them as well.
Also Peterborough Regatta is this weekend and the Saturday draw can be found here.

5th August 2006 Maidenhead Regatta took place today with wins for both Staines and SWPS crews. Full results will appear shortly on the Maidenhead RC website. See Photographs Page.

3rd August 2006 Secretary, Murray Litvak emails ----- Would all SAR Committee Members please note the wash up meeting will take place on Tuesday 8th August at 8pm. Please advise me if you can’t make it and send me an email so that we have your thoughts and views.

2nd August 2006 A magazine photoshoot is taking place at the club this afternoon that will be finishing about the time that rowing starts this evening. Will all members please be cooperative and try to keep out of the way if shooting is in progress when they arrive.

1st August 2006 The draw for Maidenhead Regatta which takes place this Saturday 5th August, has been published on the Maidenhead RC website. Several Staines Boat Club and SWPS crews are competing.

1st August 2006 Adam Gill sends this report from Henley T&V Regatta ----- The 'Baker Tilly' Staines women's squad bandwagon once again rolled into Henley this Saturday for a less pressured but nevertheless important regatta. Two crews were entered; last years victorious girls with Katie Saunders subbing in for Alison Rolt, and an eight bringing together this years Henley four with last years. The conditions were pretty tricky, a nasty headwind/slight cross whipping up the water meant crews were finding the 1000m course heavy going. First up was the S1 coxless four in a straight final against Upper Thames. Staines had their usual trademark lightning start and pulled out a 1 1/2 length lead in the first 500m; but the girls took the brunt of the wind on the Bucks station and despite a good fight to the line, Upper Thames managed to claw them back to eventually win. After only half an hour on dry land, and hardly anytime to draw breath, the eight was out, in a three lane straight final against Maidenhead and Upper Thames. The UTRC boat contained the four that had just raced, with two GB internationals in the boat and have been training together for some time. But again Staines showed their talent is enough to match anyone, as they again pulled out a length lead off the start. With the wind buffeting both boats the majority of the course, Upper Thames had a strong middle section to bring them back on terms and then gain a length lead into the final 300m. The Staines put a herculean push in to the line, leaving themselves only half a length down on a talented crew, beating Maidenhead to an easily verdict. An impressive result from a crew that had only done a few starts together. Whilst no pewterware this weekend, a thorougly enjoyable afternoon's racing - even Olympians wanted in on the action (see photos).

31st July 2006 Michelle O'Riordan writes ----- Liz and Michelle are having a 30th birthday bash at the boat club this Saturday and we would like to invite you all to celebrate this milestone with us from 7.30 pm onwards. There will be a DJ spinning some tunes and we will be reverting back to our childhood with giant connect 4 and giant jenga among other things on the lawn!

31st July 2006 Vice Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- I've put some cones and tape down on the landing stage to keep the geese off when there's no one around. If you are last off the water or last to leave the club can you please make sure you put the cones back in position. This will save us having to scrub down the landing stage before each outing. Thanks. Plus, a big thanks to John Morrison for doing the nasty job of unblocking the club's drains. Can everyone please be careful of what they put down the sinks and toilets as it doesn't take much to block the drains. Thanks.

31st July 2006 The results for last Saturday's Henley Town and Visitiors Regatta can now be found on the official website. There were no wins unfortunately for competing Staines Boat Club crews.

28th July 2006 Jenny Page emails again ----- Last weekend Philippa Davis, former SBC lightweight and creator of the best vodka jelly around, now living in Basingstoke, married David Tilley -  various past crew mates & partners joined them to celebrate their big day. Many current members of the mid/90s/early 2000s will remember Philippa well (if not, check out the photos to the left of the Club door!).

28th July 2006 Jenny Page emails ----- Henley Veterans Regatta – Staines old girls, past and present now have the hardware to prove their cumulative advancing years by a recent victory in the VetC/D handicap 8’s race at Henley Veterans Regatta.  Five past and present ‘S.O.G.s’: Pauline Bird (now at TSS), Helen Bloor (now at Nottingham Boat Club), Jo Wilby, Gurli Medcalf (str) & Jenny Page joined crew mates Nicola Dale (UTRC), Kate Grose (TSS) and Bernie McCabe (NBC) superbly coxed by Brendan Desmond (TSS) to gain a narrow two foot victory over UK Gold racing as a Star Composite previously unbeaten at Henley Vets. The excitement came in the last race of the Regatta which provided an exciting final which had spectators racing alongside the crews, yelling profusely – all goes to prove there is ‘life after 30 something and the rest’!

27th July 2006 A plea from Social Secretaries, Anna & Di ----- Calling all SBC Squad Members, we've a record number of entries for the September Pubs & Clubs Regatta (Sunday 10th). A number of crews have asked us to supply a cox / coach for them and at the moment the demand is greater than the supply. Please could you email Anna & Di by Thursday if you would be willing to help. You will only need to give 5 hours of your time to help your crew develop their winning technique during August! Once we have enough volunteers, we will put you in touch with your crew and you can coordinate training times to suit. Thank you Anna & Di

27th July 2006 Jim Pettitt sends this link to the Kodak Gallery website where he has posted some photos that he took at Staines and Burway V&J Regattas.

26th July 2006 I have posted a few photos taken at Burway Veteran and Junior Regatta on Sunday. See Photographs Page.

26th July 2006 Vice Captain, Craig Twaddle emails again ----- There will be a capsize drill for scullers at the club at 11.30am on Sunday. If you have not done one before, or it's been a while since you last did one, then we strongly recommend you come along as you need to be familiar with the procedure for righting the boat and getting back in.

26th July 2006 Vice Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- With the recent hot weather there have been a lot of people swimming in the river. In the past couple of days there have also been instances of people jumping into the river from the ROAD DECK of the twin M25 bridges which is obviously very dangerous as they could hit a boat passing underneath. Can everyone keep an eye out for swimmers and we also recommend you turn downstream of the twin bridges if there are swimmers around.

25th July 2006 Vice Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Staines Regatta gets a mention on the Tideway Slug under the 'Upriver Antics' of Mr John Hedger, Chairman of the Multi Lane Umpires Commission and Vice Chairman of the WRC.

24th July 2006 Liz Bernard sends this report on behalf of SWPS ----- The Staines/Burway weekend was a busy one, seeing SWPS winning 19 goblets/pots! At Staines on Saturday, the WJ12’s raced each other in the WJ12 4x+ and the WJ12 2x, therefore guaranteed wins!  The WJ15 4x+ won in a composite crew, Charlotte, Emily B, Emma Corless and Ingrid, coxed by Heather, and it was a composite crew which won the WJ15 2x  (Emily B and Emma Corless).  Vikki also won the WJ16 1x. At Burway on Sunday, the WJ15 4x+ won, Charlotte, Emily, Heather, and Ingrid and coxed by Alice, and the WJ16 2x won, Vikki and Rachel.  A successful weekend  - well done to all the crews (and Nick!).

24th July 2006 Rob Oades (snr) reports ----- A busy weekends racing at the Staines Regatta and at the following day's Burway Junior & Veterans Regatta saw five pots won by the Junior Squad. On the Saturday at Staines, three victories were achieved, two by Emma Corless sculling with the girls from SWPS in the WJ15 2x and WJ15 4X+. Rob Oades won his first sculling point in the MJ16 1x event. On the Sunday at Burway, Andrew Frost and Tom Oades continued their unbeaten run in the MJ13 2x event winning all three rounds with ease. Also on form was Jonathan (Tidler) Pettitt winning his MJ11 1x event, again in three rounds. As always many thanks to the coaches, parents and friends who came along to support the squad.

23rd July 2006 Staines Regatta took place yesterday with a prolonged rain shower disturbing the middle of a pleasant summer day. There was some excellent racing and no doubt reports will come in shortly from the various factions. Staines Regatta and Staines Boat Club would like to thank all members, friends and families who put so much effort in making the day a success. Full results are available on the regatta website and photos can be found on the Photographs Page.

21st July 2006 Duncan Speight writes ----- Please find attached the regatta job list (Excel format) as it stands at the moment.  As you can see there are still some jobs that need to be filled and there others that are not listed so may I ask all members and friends who can help to put their names forward (letting me know by e-mail) that would be great. Your regatta needs YOU.

20th July 2006 Kristina Frost would like to extend thanks, on behalf of Staines Boat Club, to the Surrey Herald for their help with the adverts and publishing of photos for our recent photo competition. Copies of the Staines & Egham News are available from your newsagent today.

I am therefore looking for someone to share my house with Ian Grant for that time. If you are interested, please contact me on alison.rolt@sodexho-uk.com or come & have a chat if you see me at the club.

18th July 2006 Rob Oades reports on the SBC girls at Molesey Junior Regatta ----- two more victories in the J15 1x, Emma Corless and the J16 1x, Charlotte Morrison. Unfortunately the two double crews of Charlotte and Emma Parkes (J16 2x) and Emma C and Jennifer Goldswain (J15 2x) faired less well, losing in the first rounds. Jenny also sculled with the SWPS girls in the J15 4X+ which lost in the final.

See Rob's photos on the Kodak website.

18th July 2006 The annual Swan Upping began yesterday at Sunbury Lock and continued upstream. An explanation from the British Monarchy website ----- Swan Upping dates from medieval times, when the Crown claimed ownership of all mute swans which  were considered an important food source for banquets and feasts. Today the Crown retains the right to ownership of all unmarked mute swans in open water, but The Queen only exercises this right on certain stretches of the River Thames and its surrounding tributaries. This ownership is shared with the Vinters' and Dyers' Livery Companies, who were granted rights of ownership by the Crown in the fifteenth century. (The swans are counted but, of course, no longer eaten.) The Queen's Swan Marker, and the accompanying Swan Uppers of the Vintners' and Dyers' Livery Companies, use six traditional Thames rowing skiffs in their five-day journey upstream as far as Abingdon. By tradition scarlet uniforms are worn by The Queen's Swan Marker and Swan Uppers, and each boat flies the appropriate flag and pennant. The Queen's Swan Marker produces a report at the completion of Swan Upping each year providing data on the number of swans accounted for, including broods and cygnets. The cygnets are weighed and measured to obtain estimates of growth rates and the birds are examined for any sign of injury, commonly caused by fishing hook and line. The cygnets are ringed with individual identification numbers by The Queen's Swan Warden, whose role is scientific and non-ceremonial. ----- The cygnets raised by the swans on the Staines Boat Club lawn were captured opposite the club under the willow trees obscuring the view although the 3 cygnets were squealing quite loudly. The flotilla then rowed the short distance upstream to The Swan where they had there lunch. The swan family spent the next hour or so then one cygnet proudly showed we his new ring (see photo). Apparently this one is now 'owned' by the Vintners! See Graham Carey's photos 1 - 2 - 3 -
