23rd February 2004 The BBC "The Other Boat Race" will be taking place this Wednesday 25th Feb at 3.30pm from Putney Bridge to Hammersmith Bridge for those wishing to celebrity spot. This race will be televised as part of the BBC boat race coverage and will be shown the night before the 'proper race'. The crews are comprised of media celebrities who also attended either Oxford or Cambridge universities along with Staines Boat Club's own Trisha Corless. Some of the early training of the Cambridge crew was filmed at Staines and John Lusty and Paul Hopkins may be seen rowing in some of the boats. Other Staines members were also helping by driving the coaching and safety launches. A few still photos will follow later.

21st February 2004 Good racing today was the verdict of the Staines coaches for the many crews that raced at Burway Head. The only winning trophies went to the Vet D Coxed Four who also won at last week's Molesey Head, today racing at Vet C after Ian McHugh brought his youth and power to the boat in substitution for John Lusty who is on a skiing holiday. This, despite the crew having a major clash just before the finish after being obstructed by a Weybridge Ladies crew and losing an estimated 20 seconds. Ted Dyos praised his juniors even though they had a minor coming together with some bankside bushes. The Sir William Perkins's School J14 quad also had a good race vying for position with the crew in front all the way up the course before taking them near the finish. The results have been combined for both divisions and estimates vary as to the effect the weather conditions had but the general feeling is that the second division took about 15 seconds longer to complete than the first division. The results can be found on the Burway website. See Photographs Page. Paul Goldswain adds ----- The Staines WJ14X had a very good result coming second in their division behind Henley despite never having rowed together before. The crew comprised of Becky Corless (niece of the well known SBC Ladies Champion, Trisha Corless) Rachel Edwards, Emma Parks, Charlotte Morrison and first time cox Jenny Goldswain. The crew were just 1 second ahead of the very competent Sir William Perkins's School. Thanks go to all parents and coaches for their support.

20th February 2004 Rachel Quarrell writes ----- A little announcement: I have extended the deadline for the prize draw to win the unique mass-signed Rowing Calendar (Redgrave, Pinsent, Cracknell, Foster, Searle, Coode, Houghton, Flood, Haining, Topolski, and dozens of others...), and the closing date is now February 29th. "Sir Steve Redgrave" autographs are two a penny: this is something much more special and unusual. Please let your club know - this is a fantastic chance to win something which will have great collector's value one day, while raising money for worthy rowing charities. Tell members, veterans, juniors and parents: even non-rowers may want to enter, and all the cheques go to help the next generation of rowing youngsters and coaches. I would really appreciate your help publicising this, as I have tried to help the UK clubs publicise their information over the years. Massively better odds than the lottery, too! There is a page about it that you can print off at here on the Rowing Service. Thank you very much for helping this fund-raising effort, and best of luck with your entries! Rachel Quarrell. http://www.rowingservice.com/

Would anyone like to work the bar for us so we don't have to? ----- Free beer perhaps Terry?

17th February 2004 Craig Twaddle emails ----- The draw for Burway Head that takes place next Saturday 21st February has now been published and can be found here.

17th February 2004 Something to aspire to from the FISA website ----- Italy's Elia Luini broke the indoor rowing record in the lightweight men's category last week at the Italian Indoor Rowing Championships in Rome. They finished the two mile course 13 seconds in front of 6 times race winners, Maidenhead Rowing Club, in a time of 9 minutes and 51 seconds. The Sir William Perkins's School J14 quad also won today in a time of 11 minutes exactly against some excellent crews from LEH and Surbiton High School. The second Staines D Four (Staines I) finished in a time of 10 minutes and 23 seconds. Full results are available on the Molesey website. See Photographs Page and Tales from the River Bank.

5th February 2004 Treasurer, John Walton has released some information for all those wishing to make a payment to Staines Boat Club. See Payments document (Word format)

4th February 2004 Murray livak writes regarding non payment of membership fees. ----- The Committee was made aware last night that there are several members who have yet to pay a membership fee for this year. It was agreed at the meeting that any member who has not paid will be unable to compete at Henley Head on Saturday and crews will be withdrawn accordingly. Therefore in simple terms the non payers will be letting down the rest of the crew. Steve Smith the Captain will be contacting people individually to make them aware of this and to hopefully get payment. It is regrettable that this has to be done but SBC is not a charity and non payers are only cheating members who pay.

4th February 2004 You may have noticed that the sinks in the kitchen have been blocked and unuseable recently. They are now unblocked and working perfectly after the efforts of Graham Standbrook who cleared them yesterday.

2nd February 2004 Ex Captain and around the world traveller, Duncan Speight emails ----- "Hi guys, I just thought I'd drop a quick line to let you know how everything is going.... tried updating the website but the computer at the hostel in San Francisco is having a bit of a fit so I thought this would be easier (even though I can't read what I am writing until the computer decides to update itself!) Well the train journey from Winter Park was pretty cool, 34 hours but through some fantastic countryside, going from mountains to valleys, to canyons, to swamps to deserts then back to mountains and then finally to green trees and countryside... bit like the UK... though as Austin Powers said "it's funny how the Californian countryside looks in no way like the British countryside :-)". it is raining like mad here and we are contemplating what to do... think it could be a trip to the cinema and if it clears up over to Alcatraz. The knee looks like it is sorting itself out... no longer on crutches just walking slowly and getting up even slower! Sorry about the www I think I was feeling a bit sorry for myself and made it sound worse than it was?!?!? The doc had a look at at and reckons it is only a partial tear so it should heal in a month or so... hopefully in time for our walk in Hawaii."

2nd February 2004 Roger Pailes and John Lusty report that RED boards are being displayed at Bell Weir and Chertsey locks. The weather forecast is for more rain this week and already several flood watch warnings are being given for the Thames. This must put the running of Henley Head next Saturday in real jeopardy. See the Henley Rowing Club website later this week for any updates and the Environment Agency website for general flood reports.

Results will be available within the next 3 days on the Windsor Boys School Boat Club website.

23rd January 2004 Adrian Tollett emails ----- I see from the SBC website that the University Boat Race is 'in the headlines' already. People who have already mentioned entries can they resend them to confirm them. Entry details are available here. Don't forget, MONDAY next week, we need to give the good old post a chance! 20th January 2004 Steve Tassell emails ----- To ALL Women rowers: there is a squad meeting next Monday 26th January at Magna Carta School after circuits (8pm). The aim of the meeting is to set out the objectives for squad rowers over the coming winter months. Basic agenda is: your goals for the winter season and therefore based on this process of crew selection, race program and training schedules. Who should attend? Anyone regardless of ability (Novice through to Elite) that wants to train regularly with the aim of racing. If you’re already part of the squad and your priorities have changed since you started rowing this season, i.e. you want to do less/more rowing this is the perfect time to tell us. Those that wish to row at a more leisurely pace -and therefore outside the squad- please speak to the Women’s Co-ordinator Leanne Johns who will help you identify other like minded people. Yes apparently there is life outside of squad rowing at Staines! N.B. this is the really important bit…If you don’t tell us either by turning up to the meeting, or in advance if you can’t make the meeting, that you want to be included in the squad, we’ll assume you are no longer interested. Last point! This is also a good time to introduce a friend! If you know anyone out there that you think is mad enough to want to give rowing a go get them to come down to the meeting next week. We’re always on the look out for more people!

19th January 2004 Steve Tassell writes ----- Anyone coming across a pair of trainers matching the description below please drop Ross or me a line, hopefully they’ll turn up! From Ross Thomson - I had the pleasure of rowing at your club yesterday for Thames and would like to say what a hospitable club you have. One slight blot was that I kept my trainers out of my bag as they where muddy and unfortunately left them in the club house (I think)! If you find a pair of (muddy) red, blue and white Saucony trainers (size 11's) please let me know and I will gladly pay for the postage.

I trust that you will understand that safety is our number one priority. All other events are STILL ON.

16th January 2004 Leanne Johns reports at 1.45pm that Mike Piper has checked the boards and they are now showing YELLOW!!!

16th January 2004 Roger Pailes has cycled to Bell Weir Lock this morning and checked the boards. He warns that they are yellow on the downstream side and RED on the upstream side. He interprets this as meaning that the Staines Boat Club stretch is on RED boards. This means that anyone driving past the lock and looking at the boards may make an incorrect assumption on the state of the river.

16th January 2004 Ian Mchugh reports that the Bell Weir Lock was still showing yellow boards when he drove past this morning on the way to work.

16th January 2004 Steve Ballantine emails re. 14th January 2004 Steve Ballantine advises that the decision to cancel the Remenham Challenge has not been made and that there is still hope that the event will be held on Sunday as planned. The organisation has now been finalised and there is a close watch currently on the river conditions. News will appear here as soon as it is has been released by Steve.

14th January 2004 The committee would like to hear from any members who would be prepared to undertake an ARA Instructors Award course. There is a possibility that we can join forces with Weybridge Rowing Club to hold an IA Award course locally this year. These courses are in great demand so anyone interested must act now. If you fancy doing come coaching for the club there are many crews who would be delighted to have you help. Email the Captain, Steve Smith as soon as possible to get your name down.

12th January 2004 Steve Ballantine emails ----- Please find attached the Job List for Remenham Head. There will be some doubling up of jobs. If you have yet to volunteer there are still things to be done so do not be put off by the thought that you don't fit any of the remaining gaps.

12th January 2004 Rachel Quarrell of The Rowing Service fame is arranging for a draw for a specially signed rowng calendar for 2004. To quote ' With a new Olympic campaign beginning, the calendar carries signatures of those who are trying to make the next chapter in Britain's rowing history, as well as those who are already heroes. This is an amazing collector's item, and could be used for fund-raising for your club or kept for posterity.' The Charities benefitting are the Rowing Foundation and the Mark Lees Trust. See here for details.

10th January 2004 Rowing was cancelled this morning after RED Boards were displayed at Bell Weir Lock. This was surprising as the river level was not over the landing stage and the wind was negligible. Bob Slade advises that the river is high at Reading and with the heavy rain forecast, the lock keeper believes the red boards are likely to be up for the next week so there will be no rowing on the Staines stretch. The conditions may put the Remenham Challenge that is due to take place next Sunday in jeopardy and the race may have to be moved to the Tideway in the circumstances. The organiser, Steve Ballantine has yet to make a decision but it will be posted here as soon as it is available.

10th January 2004 Roger Pailes advises that he has now received details of the Oarsman's Cross Country Run which takes place in Windsor on Saturday 24th January 2004 at 2.30pm. 8th January 2004 You may have noticed that the hole in the boathouse floor that the boat rack wheels keep falling in, has been filled. This job was undertaken by Graham Standbrook yesterday after instructions were given to him by Club Maintenance Officer, John Lusty.

7th January 2004 Ted Dyos requests that all members that train in the gymnasium at Magna Carta School on Monday evenings, park their cars in the car park at the front of the building and NOT in the usual car park. Please use the school's main gates in Thorpe Road and not the entrance in St. Paul's Road as there have been complaints from other users not being able to gain access. Upon entering the main gates please turn left and park in the car park. The doors leading to the gym that are adjacent to the car park will be left open in the future to allow easy access for Staines members.

7th January 2004 Steve Ballantine advises this evening that the Remenham Challenge entries have now exceeded the maximum number allowed and further entries will be refused. This follows a Staines Veteran Eight entry not being accepted due to the numbers restriction.

7th January 2004 Steve Ballantine writes ----- REMENHAM HEAD ENTRIES, after less than 2 days 50% of the entries are filled by mainly 2 clubs. Please get your entries in as soon as possible, also state which crews take PRIORITY as unfortunately some will inevitably be disappointed. As stated in the letter that went out we will do our best to ensure all Founding clubs are represented in both divisions. Regards Steve.

7th January 2004 Caroline Gill emails ----- We are keen to continue the club dinners on Wednesday night. Not only is this a nice chance to get together mid-week but also an opportunity to make a small amount of profit for the club. Jules will co-ordinate the rota so could anyone willing to cook one evening please email her at j.reichel@eurolondon.com. All support (cooking and eating!) will be much appreciated.

31st December 2003 For your information this web site has had a total of 26738 visitors this year which represents and increase of 75% over the 2002 total of 15246. We have approximately 100 visitors a day on weekdays and our best day was Monday 28th July 2003 (the Monday following Staines Regatta) when we had 270 visitors. Please note that these figures represent visitors and not 'hits' so people clicking the refresh button for example are only counted once.

31st December 2003 Due to the cold weather conditions, our Secretary, Murray Litvak decided he had to cut short his crew's outing this morning so if anyone has any suggestions for him on how to keep himself warm while coxing then please let him know. He also divulged that he is to celebrate his 40th birthday on the 19th January. Perhaps any unwanted Christmas gifts of gloves and socks etc. can be donated to him as a present!

27th December 2003 Men's Coordinator, Robin Dunlop reports ----- Slightly hectic, I am now packing for a wedding in Austria, flight today (Sat 27th)!!! Sorry to say no outing plans done this week for 27/28, sorry but Xmas got in the way! So pitch up at the w/e and see whose up for a bash, hopefully people survived the Boxing Day race yesterday! Failing that do your own thing and see you 3rd/4th, again as I am in Austria it will be a 'loosely' organised affair, (I will be around Sunday 4th). I hope this does not cause too much despondency in my absence (it shouldn't) and I will promise a more organised start to the new years rowing on my return. Happy New Year - start working off those extra pounds!! Robin

26th December 2003 The Boxing Day race took place today with a win for the Burway crew over Staines by 2 lengths. The was some agreement amongst the Staines members that the race next year should be with full senior crews rather than the mixed crews who raced this year. See Photographs Page.

24th December 2003 In January 2004 Nigel Gower from Weybridge Rowing Club and a friend are to row the 2,900 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in aid of the charity Cancer Research UK. They are just about to leave for Tenerife to begin their journey. Nigel is a stalwart member Of Weybridge RC and has helped out Staines members and crews many times at regattas with boats etc. Please look at the Row the Atlantic website to see how they are getting on with their preparations. Look at the 'Recent Diary Entries' for the latest news. They are trying to raise £75,000 to fund the trip and provide a substantial donation to the charity so if you can help in any way then the team would be very pleased to hear from you.

The traditional meal of Roast Mute Swan was served with a Mulberry sauce. Speeches were given by club President, Don Moore. See Photographs Page.

21st December 2003 All club members are reminded that on Boxing Day, the annual race against Burway Rowing Club will take place on the Burway (Laleham) stretch of the river. The race will take place at approximately 11.00 am. Your support is needed as we are the current holders of the Edward Clarke Cup which dates from 1863 and we would like to retain it again this year. Steve Ballantine advises that Staines will be putting forward a mixed crew this year to match the available members at Burway as they are not able to assemble a full senior crew.

20th December 2003 Steve Smith wishes to remind all committee members that the next committee meeting will take place at 8.00 pm on Tuesday 13th January 2004. He advises that the first agenda items are 1. The Club Constitution and 2. The final organisation of the Remenham Challenge Race. Please advise Murray Litvak as soon as possible of any further points you want raised.

19th December 2003 Don't forget that Duncan, Jodi, Alex, Jo and Dan have their leaving party in the clubhouse tonight to which all members and friends are invited. Starts at 7.00pm. He has washed and cared for it and is now waiting for the rightful owner to claim it. Please ask Roger when you next see him at the club if you know who owns it.

16th December 2003 Lights, Camera, Action! Today saw filming by Carlton Television at Staines Boat Club. Channel 4 will be screening two programmes next year about the Olympics and the Ancient Greeks and required footage for the introduction. 14th December 2003 The Plum Pudding races today were the largest ever with over 80 people competing and most of them were rowing in both divisions. The Christmas Dinner (lunch) followed, ably cooked by Jules Reichel and Alison Rolt. It was to be cooked by professional chef Steve Conner ( aka six pack) but he was taken ill at the last moment after cooking the turkey (rumours that he contracted food poisoning are unfounded). Thanks must also go to Caroline Gill for the fantastic organisation, Adam Gill for his mammoth work with the complicated handicap system and all the other volunteers who, while too many to name, worked so hard to make the day such a success. The Captain, Steve Smith, presented Caroline with a bunch of flowers for her efforts and congratulated all the competitors who raced. See Photographs Page.

13th December 2003 Burway Small Boats Head took place today with some wind and rain making the rowing more difficult. The Sir William Perkins's School J14 double of Sarah-Jane Gregory and Vikki Wardle won their event having won the same category at Walton Small Boats Head last weekend. 12th December 2003 Caroline Gill has modified the draw for Sunday's Plum Puddings. Please refresh your browser if you do not get the modified document (changes highlighted in light green).

11th December 2003 Caroline Gill writes ----- Here is the draw for the 2003 Plum Puddings! Everyone is rowing at least once and most people are rowing twice, with the exception of some of the juniors (as we are limited on space in the quads) and the ladies preparing lunch during the 2nd race. For the first race please arrive by 8.30am and for the second by 10.30am. (anyone arriving more than 20mins late will not be able to row - sorry to be harsh but we've got a lot of boats to get on the water and want things to run as smoothly as possible. Hangovers from the night before are anticipated but will not be an excuse for turning up late!) Any errors or problems with the draw please let me know asap. Some of the more experienced members will notice that they have been asked to cox one race (and row the other) as we have a shortage of willing coxes - hopefully you will be happy to help out! On the same note, there is also a shortage of cox boxes and so they will be allocated before the race according to boat type and experience/volume of cox, please bear this in mind and don't rush to get one on Sunday morning. Oh, and wrap up warm if you're coxing! We anticipate that lunch will be from 12.30 however the huge numbers attending mean that you may have to be patient with us on the timing! The bar will open after the 1st outing. Racing costs £1 per person and lunch is £3.50 per person. Thanks in advance to all those helping out with the party, racing and lunch - it is much appreciated. This is going to be an excellent weekend! The party starts at 7.30pm on Saturday, see you there...... Caroline

10th December 2003 Caroline Gill sends this update for the weekend ----- We have now got around 85 people for the racing on Sunday and nearly 120 for lunch - it's turning into a logistical nightmare! Would anyone who has a hostess trolley for keeping food warm and/or a microwave with a grill function be able to lend us them on Sunday. I have a feeling we are going to be short of chairs too so would ask people to bring any folding chairs they might have. Other than that I think it's all under control(!) - it's going to be a great weekend! Many thanks Caroline

10th December 2003 Bigblade have released photographs available to purchase that were taken at Wallingford Head last Sunday. They can also be seen on the Photographs Page on this web site.

9th December 2003 Ex Captain, Duncan Speight and ex Kit Officer, Jodi Davis are off on a romantic trip together to the far corners of the world for a whole year ---- with Duncan's friend Dan!!! They have created a web site which, while still in its infancy, will keep all interested members informed of their travels. A link will be provided on this web site (in the column on the left) for the duration of their trip. Don't forget they have their leaving party in the clubhouse on Friday night to which all members and friends are invited.

9th December 2003 Caroline Gill emails with an update on the Christmas festivities taking place this weekend: A huge number of entries for this year's Plum Puddings race means that we will be unable to accept any entries after Wednesday 10th at midday. Crews will be drawn on Wednesday evening and published on this website on Thursday. If you know of anyone who does not have access to the online entry form and has not been down to the club recently to sign-up there, but would like to take part, now is the time to alert them as we need details asap and will not be able to include people who just turn up on the day. We also need numbers for the Christmas Lunch asap so if you have not signed up already, please do so now! At the moment, despite a huge number of entries for the racing, we are a bit short of coxes - anyone who is able and willing to cox (even just for one race, if you want to row as well) please let me know. We are also still on the hunt for prizes for the Christmas raffle - if you are able to donate a prize it would be very gratefully received. One final plea, we will be decorating the clubhouse on Saturday after training in preparation for the Christmas party so if anyone has any spare/unwanted Christmas decorations please do bring them down to the club then. To contact me about any of the above please email: plumpuddings@dsl.pipex.com. Thanks!

9th December 2003 Roy Dauncey has announced that the long established Veteran's Christmas Lunch will this year be held at the Swan Hotel in Staines at 1.30 pm for 2.00 pm on Sunday 21st December 2003. Will all guests please note that Roy MUST have the menu selection telephoned to him by Saturday 13th December at the latest. If you haven't received your official menu document then you can view and print the menu only here.

8th December 2003 News has just reached us about an incident at Wallingford Head yesterday. Apparently, just before the start of the race, a certain well known older male Staines coxswain was 'caught short'. He proceeded to hail a lift from a waterborne marshall who would only give his name as Ben. Ben then transported this ill prepared cox to a suitable field to relieve himself. The crew reported that at least it stopped him whingeing during the race!

6th December 2003 Captain, Steve Smith gave a presentation to a large number of members today. He covered many aspects of why, where and how we row and introduced members of the committee with a slide show. Also covered were the new safety rules, club history, finance, equipment, kit and our social events. He announced that the draw for Plum Puddings would take place on Wednesday 10th December so anyone who has not entered must enter by clicking here NOW and completing the form.

6th December 2003 Walton Small Boats Head took place today in dry conditions but with a slight breeze blowing. Sir William Perkins's School had their first ever win since the inception of their rowing team earlier this year and it repays the many hours work of the Staines coaching team. Sarah-Jane Gregory and Vikki Wardle will go down in history by taking the J14 double sculls pennant with a very fast time that also beat the fastest J15 crew. See photo. They completed the course in 13mins 58.1secs and came 86th of 152 overall in the double sculls. The other results were 96th MJ16x Staines Brett 14mins 08.9secs 9th of 12, - 139th MJ14x Staines Oades 14mins 46.5secs 5th of 15, - 194th MVEx Staines A-Watson 16mins 41.3secs 3rd of 3, - 212th MJ14x Staines Pollen 18mins 24.15secs 15th of 15. 3rd December 2003 Alex Fizgerald emails ----- For those of you who remember big Andy (Newman) who rowed at Staines for 1/2 a season a few years back - a whopper! - Andy writes ----- In case I haven't called and spoken to you directly on the subject, apologies we have been a bit busy! On Saturday 29 November at 8:36pm Ali gave birth to Amelia Charlotte. Weighing 10lb 12oz she made an interesting entrance to the world but mother and baby are both well and have come home today. No photos are attached but if you are overseas, travelling or just curious you can visit the official 'mini A' website. Andy, Ali and Amelia

29th November 2003 Adrian Tollett emails ----- Sadly, the Fitzwilliam II - 'Billygoats 60+' Vet 'F' crew will not be able to race in 'The Billygoat' because it has been pranged. We will be racing in the boat named after our secretary, John Adams, instead. It also appears that we will have 9 crews chasing us, rather than the 3 expected. Last minute delays at the start are off, so breakfast-time diuretics are banned ... Start order here.

29th November 2003 Helge Neumeister writes with news of the Scullers Head today ----- Hi Graham, just to let you know that since you recently advertised my entry into the 50th Vesta Sculler's Head, there will be no results because the event has been cancelled whilst all scullers were marshalling / marshalled. Dangerous / Unrowable conditions at the Putney-end were the cause, though the start at Chiswick was pretty ugly too. Kind regards H.

28th November 2003 Captain Steve Smith advises that the official time for his presentation on Saturday 6th December will be 11.30am. Steve adds that the presentation will give information on all aspects of Staines Boat Club that you should be aware of during the year and would like to stress the importance of attending as it is aimed at improving communication within the club over the coming year.

28th November 2003 The following, from Sarah Goldswain, has been added to the For Sale Page ----- Rowley Douglas has asked me to spread the word about a boat that is for sale. He writes: I have got a friend from the Olympic Team who has got a Stamfli Pair for sale, complete with oars and riggers to convert into a double. It is for sale at lowest price £4000. It is 1 year old and has seen the water less than 20 times. It is a 75kg boat. I thought you might ask around your contacts in the West Country, School and Clubs. They are desperate to sell it for financial reasons and £4000 is the lowest price they will go to. Thanks, Rowley Please contact : rowley.douglas@btinternet.com

27th November 2003 Caroline Gill and Julia Reichel write ----- WHY not eat with us?? In the run up to Christmas (and in the name of TEAM SPIRIT of course!) there will be a weekly Pasta Dinner on Wednesdays at the club for everybody after training. The "menu" is attached so have a look, if you fancy joining us after weights, ergos or water outings just use this link provided to register for the next Wednesday night around 7.00pm. What a better way to strengthen your weak muscles than pasta and a pint Hope to see many of you there, Caroline and Jules PS- please note - dead line is Tuesday 12 o'clock... no late drop outs please as it would "eat" into our club funds! 3/12/03 - Pasta with Bolognese and Mountains of baguette 10/12/03 - Pasta with Creamy Mushroom Sauce and Mountains of baguette 17/12/03 - Pasta with Veggy Sauce and Mountains of baguette

27th November 2003 Paul Hopkins emails ----- Dear Ergoer, Many thanks to everyone who took part in Tuesday's Ergo Challenge and to Terry for providing refreshments afterwards. Congratulations to Ian McHugh on setting a PB - and to Andy Murphy who, despite having just completed a weight training session, recorded a very impressive time, just 1 second off of his PB - that man can certainly pull an ergo!!! I think the next challenge should be to take on the SBC Men's squad after Christmas. The fastest eight Vet ergoer's versus SBC's finest. If you are interested in taking part please let me know your current best 2k ergo time.

27th November 2003 Following the removal and replacement of the blade rack from the boathouse last night resulting from the 5,000 metre ergo tests, two of it't wheels are broken. Members are warned that, until it is repaired, it will be very difficult to move without several strong people to help.

25th November 2003 Although crews from Sir William Perkins's School had entered Hampton Head that takes place this coming Saturday they will not be racing. The official web site reads ----- We have a very big entry, so please read the information CAREFULLY when it arrives. All J14 classes have been withdrawn in order to keep the event running as safely as possible. ----- In view of this the girls will be training at Staines as normal on Saturday.

25th November 2003 Social Secretary, Caroline Gill emails ----- The results of the pub crawl/scavenger hunt are now in, with some great photos from all the teams. The prize will go to the winning team of Mark & Alison Rolt and Steve & Sarah Tassell, who successfully completed the most challenges - check out the Photograph Page to see what the teams got up to on the night. Thanks to all who took part. We hope to see even more of you at the next social event, the SBC CHRISTMAS PARTY on Saturday December 13th, put it in your diary now!!

24th November 2003 Captain, Steve Smith writes ----- Message to ALL ROWERS... On Sat 6th Dec, after training and at a time that will be specified shortly, you are all invited to attend a presentation giving information on all aspects of Staines Boat Club that you should be aware of during the year. I would like to stress the importance of attending this as it is aimed at improving communication within the club over the coming year. If we all share the same goals then we can move forward with a lot more momentum and who knows where we'll get!! This is for EVERYONE, both new and old to the club: Squad Men and Women, Juniors, Vets, BA, SWPS.. EVERYONE!. Information will include introducing your committee, training times, tips on training, expectations for the next year and a heap of other stuff. Also, you can see the film stars amongst you in the advertising campaign Staines took part in! As for the next few weeks, keep warm, keep smiling, keep pulling hard, and keep having fun, and I’ll see you soon, Oz

24th November 2003 Staines is hosting the Remenham Challenge this season following the floods which prevented the race from taking place last time. The date will be Sunday 18th January 2004. More details will follow shortly.

23rd November 2003 Murray Litvak writes ----- CLUB WELFARE OFFICERS -- The club has appointed Clare Wood and Christy Speight to this position. Should any member of the club, and particularly juniors, feel there is anything that needs to be brought to their attention, please contact them. All matters will be treated confidentially. Their role is to ensure that the welfare of the junior members is safeguarded in line with the requirements of the Amateur Rowing Association. Their details are: Clare Wood, 107 Old Charlton Road Shepperton, Middx., TW17 8BT Clare.wood@swanhill.co.uk and Christy Speight, 12 Elizabeth Way, Stanwell, Middx., TW19 7QN.

23rd November 2003 Rumours abound that our Australian Captain, Steve Smith swam across the Thames following England winning the Rugby World Cup yesterday. As a consequence of his foolish wager on the result of the final he apparently stripped off voluntarily and went searching for surf while all the boat club ladies turned their heads in amazement! Photographs may be available later this week.

21st November 2003 Alex Fitzgerald writes ----- Duncan & Jodi are going travelling around the world for a year with friend Dan in January and Jo and I are moving to Norwich forever in December so I hope you can come and celebrate the moves with us. Here is our official invite -- DUNCAN, JODI, ALEX, JO and DAN ARE LEAVING - YOU ARE ALL INVITED TO OUR SEND OFF - STAINES BOAT CLUB - FRIDAY 19 DECEMBER 2003 From 7.00pm. Duncan adds----- It would be great to see you there for cheap beer and dodgy music... selling this well huh?

21st November 2003 After a long period of online stagnation, our neighbours, Royal Holloway Boat Club have a new web site. Staines has had a long association with Royal Holloway as they boated from our boathouse for many years and we still have members that were students there.

21st November 2003 An anonymous emailer announces ----- "Our illustrious Captain was spotted in a single-scull last night, it was unashamedly obvious that he was getting some practice in before the Aussie-whipping frenzy this Saturday! It seems he is preparing to scull the length of the Staines stretch of the Thames in the nude and thought some practice at keeping the round bit down might be in order - who knows what he might catch with his tackle waving about when he does go in!"

21st November 2003 Member from the past Linda Thomas (nee Hall) emails ----- It's Linda Thomas from 'the calendar crew' with The Rowing Calendar 2004. Hope that you are well. It was good to see you at Pangbourne. We do get around! I even saw Pete Smith and I thought the only regatta he went to was Egham International! The reason I am getting in touch is because I am plugging the calendar and I was wondering if it would be possible for you to put up a link from your website to the calendar website http://www.thecalendarcrew.com until Christmas. The calendar is full of top GB boys- many fresh new faces in international rowing - as they prepare for the Olympics and includes 11 medal winners from the World Championships in Milan. It is the ideal solution to a Christmas present crisis and is definitely one for the ladies! As I explained to you, if your club is able to place an order for 20 calendars you will receive a free ‘limited edition’ calendar, fully signed by all of the rowers - brilliant for raising funds for the club at the club dinner, at auctions or raffle. There are only 50 ‘limited edition’ calendars available – so order early to avoid disappointment. Proceeds from the calendar will be used to support The Rowing Foundation, a charity committed to putting young people on the water, so grass roots rowing is also benefiting from your support. Hope that you can help with a link to boost sales up to Christmas. Thanks a lot and take care Linda. telephone: 0118 9402829 mobile: 07740 626640
20th November 2003 After our Antipodean Captain threw down the challenge of a wager on the outcome of the Rugby World Cup, the club members have been planning the punishment for the loser (the Captain). The rumour is that he will be sent out naked in a sculling boat to frighten the swans! There is also the threat that the gates must be left undone when he does so. Tickets for this spectacle are available from touts as is normal practice at these events.
20th November 2003 Robin Dunlop is organising 'Rugby plus Breakfast' at 9.15am on Saturday. Apart from viewing the game on a 29" TV, a full cooked breakfast will be served. Those wishing to attend please let Robin know immediately.
20th November 2003 Paul Hopkins emails with news of the Veterans Ergo Challenge ----- Now that we have all recovered from the Veteran Fours Head I thought that we should turn our attention to the Ergo Challenge. I therefore propose that we hold the first Ergo Challenge on Tuesday 25th November from 7.30pm at SBC. The purpose of the Challenge is not to beat each other, but instead to spur us on to better ergo times so that we can confidently throw down a challenge to other Club members and indeed to other clubs. Therefore for our Challenge I do not propose to operate any form of handicapping system to take account of age, weight, height, physical impairment or any other excuse. I propose that the format should be an individual 2k and a team event, with selection for the latter based on scores from the individual event. In anticipation that some of us will need resuscitation afterwards I will see if Terry could open the bar, purely for medicinal purposes. Although personal pride should be sufficient, if an additional incentive is required I would be happy to agree to the losers of the team event buying the winners a drink.

20th November 2003 Adrian Tollett writes ----- You may remember that last year, on the 5th December, I sent out an urgent S.O.S. for a bowside sub for a Billygoats 50+ crew, where 50+ was the average age. Well, we are now 1 year older (and wiser) and the average age is 60.125. "Fitzwilliam II - Billygoats 60+" Bow: A P Tollett [1972], 2: M J Bucher [1961], 3: R J Henning [1956], 4: I K Hall [1964], 5: A J Price [1967], 6: R S Wood [1960], 7:D A Knowles [1960], Stroke: E C Bates [1960], Cox: G J Harrison [1955] I don't know if we are the first Vet F crew ever to compete in the Fairbairn Head, but we will have a crack at improving on our finishing position last year of 39th out of 42 overall, only 10 seconds behind St. Cat's I ! Our stroke, Ted Bates, (known to many as secretary of MBC) has devised a cunning plan to achieve this : "Bow Four can do their own thing if they can go twice as fast as Stern Four." We hope to be rowing our preferred boat : "The Billygoat" and would welcome any support from the banks of the Cam for an expected start time of 12:00. Results will be available on www.fairbairns.com

19th November 2003 Mark Rolt advises ----- "We have now purchased 8 lights for club use. At the moment you will still need to tape them to the boat - ensure that they are not obstructed from the side so that each light is visible 180 degrees. We will be shortly sorting out Velcro attachments. Can you ensure that if you use a club light you return it to the store room below the cox boxes after use. Please don't take them home or leave them on a boat - they are for everyone's use."

19th November 2003 Terry Moore reports ----- Calling all members who have ever seen a cox box and charger. If you have taken a cox box and charger for a race or training session then that is fine, but when you have finished with them, BRING them back the SAME DAY so others can use them. The club has 2, yes TWO, chargers left; there are 8 about some where. Just to give you an idea, each cox box costs £600 that is over 3 peoples annual membership fee per cox box. So if you have missed the plot of this message BRING BACK THE COX BOXES AND CHARGERS. Thank you.

19th November 2003 Captain, Steve Smith emails ----- Right Guys, Here's the deal.... Because I am aware of how many of you are misguided enough to think that you could possibly beat the aussies...! in a game of rugby....! on their own soil...! whilst they are defending their title!?! your Club Captain is laying down a challenge.... I would like to declare that I'm up for a little wager, no money, but the loser of the challenge (i.e. you) will have to complete whatever punishment is set for being bold enough to believe that the Aussies could not possibly win! The punishment would be at the boat club in training time, and both are to be decided before kickoff on Saturday. Any of you who think that you can take on the likes of your club Captain....... BRING IT ON!!!!!!

19th November 2003 Roy Dauncey writes ----- To my very good friends at Staines Boat Club. Just a note to express my thanks for the surprise party - and indeed the painting and hip flasks (2 by jove) presented to me on Saturday night. To say I have enjoyed myself over the years, making friends, socialising and watching the crews winning races is an understatement. You lot at Staines are Aces High in my pack of cards. God bless and thank you. Roy
18th November 2003 Social Secretary, Caroline Gill reports ----- 'Thanks to everyone who attended the pub crawl/photo scavenger hunt on Friday. By all accounts it was a good night out and everyone threw themselves into the drinking and photo challenges with great enthusiasm! Particular thanks to Diane who stepped in to coordinate events on the night. The winners will be announced later in the week once the photos have been developed (I am anticipating some dodgy looks from the staff in Boots when I collect them, thanks mainly to Steve T's idea that everyone should capture some public nudity on film!) so watch this space for the results and the (censored!) photographic evidence........'

17th November 2003 The recent news here regarding the new speed cameras on the M4 has proven to be a hoax. See the Speed Check web site.

12th November 2003 Captain of Boats, Steve Tassell advises ----- Due to the large numbers of active rowers down the boat club at the moment the committee have taken the decision to trial a more structured boat booking procedure. We have had similar things in the past and as crews get settled I’m sure this will become less of an issue. So for the time being if you wish to use a boat at peak times (the weekend) you must check the boat availability sheet which can be found on the notice board by the club entrance (on your right as you walk through the door). Any boats that have been allocated will be clearly marked. If you regularly come down at the weekends to row your requests should be handled through the Men’s and Women’s Coordinators Robin for the Men cutthemustarduk@yahoo.co.uk and Leanne for the Women Leanne.Johns@swanhill.co.uk. Otherwise leave it to chance and come down on the weekend but we can’t guarantee there will be a boat available.

11th November 2003 Dan Spring emails ----- I have just noticed this photo of the Staines Thames Cup eight at HRR on the Row2k.com

11th November 2003 Michelle O'Riordan still enjoying the hard life in Australia, emails today with her sixth news bulletin. Michelle is very keen to hear from all of you that know her so please write. See Michelle's Travels.

7th November 2003 Bar Officer, Terry Moore writes ----- What better way of clearing that morning after Roy's do than doing the sculling ladder this Sunday. Can all sculls please be at the M25 bridge by 8.00am. Remember Roy's party starts at 7.00pm and he is getting there about 8.00pm. Please keep it a secret. See you on Saturday and Sunday. Thanks Terry
7th November 2003 Murray Litvak advises ----- STAINES REGATTA MEETING MONDAY 17TH NOVEMBER A reminder to all members of the Regatta Committee that there is a meeting at 8pm on Monday 17th November at the Club. If you can't make it, please let me know so that we can sort an alternative time if necessary.

6th November 2003 Safety Adviser, Mark Rolt emails ----- "Lights Again!! - I didn't think I needed to add this, but after last night it appears so. The requirement on having lights attached to the boat also encompasses SWITCHING THEM ON and having batteries which LAST THE TRIP!!! If you battery goes flat (which it shouldn't as you should notice the fade and come in before)-come in immediately - don't finish your outing. Please think about it folks - this is for your benefit as well as the clubs.... Thus ends the Sermon.."

6th November 2003 Alison Rolt advises ----- SALE OF WINTER KIT If you are in need of winter kit, the attached list is of kit which is already available in the kit box in the boat club - all at very good prices!!! Speak to or email me if you are interested in buying any of it. If there's nothing there for you, I can order NEW kit for you. Your order should be made on the printed form (download here in Word format) or on hard copies which will be available at the club. I need ALL orders to be returned to me, with full payment by the 13th November. I know it doesn't leave much time, however if you want them before Christmas we have to be quick! Please only buy new kit if you are really desperate. The commitee, at the last meeting agreed to look at trying to develop a club "brand" - therefore the designs MAY be changing. After the next committee meeting (when a decision has been made) I will be putting a full order in for all kit (including racing and wet weather wear etc, thanks ALISON

5th November 2003 Safety Adviser, Mark Rolt emails ----- The committee discussed lights at its meeting last night. It was endorsed that you cannot row/scull without 360 degree white light in compliance with ARA and PLA by-laws. If you cannot comply with this you cannot go out on the water after dusk. The committee will be enforcing this and I would ask that everyone respect this safety issue. The committee also agreed to purchase appropriate lights for rowing. (360degree/waterproof/attachable) Initially we will be purchasing 4 sets for crew use and intend to seek money for additional ones. I intend to order these in the next week. If a member wants me to order lights at the same time for their scull please let me know as soon as possible. Lights are (subject to numbers) £25 plus postage a set."

5th November 2003 Terry Moore writes to remind us that there will be a "bonfire party" this weekend which is a surprise party (he does not know about it) for Roy Dauncey's retirement. It will take place on Saturday evening from 7.00 pm. All members are welcome. Roy has been a member of SBC for many years and taught hundreds of novices to row. So sup
