activity and you all helped to raise almost £60 profit for club funds! Thanks to all
of the volunteer chefs and helpers……Next SBC Big Breakfast will
be in the New Year…...for now make sure you have signed

17th November 2005 World
Rowing Championships volunteers wanted at Dorney Lake ----- From the ARA
website -- If
you’re still waiting for your international rowing call up for 2006, it’s probably
too late. But it’s still not too late to participate at next year’s World Championships,
returning to the UK for the first time in 10 years.
17th November 2005 Ian
Grant emails ----- I have collected
a Heart Rate Monitor watch from off an ergo handle and I believe Steve B has pick one up from
off the bar last night. If you think that either may be yours, then get in touch with us. Steve
Ballantine emails -----
Hello All, I have picked up an expensive looking heart rate
monitor to keep it safe, it has been lying around the club for a while if it belongs to you
let me know and I'll hand it over.
15th November 2005 Craig
Twaddle emails ----- Staines scullers encountered a new hazard to navigation
on Sunday morning. Staines Railway Bridge appeared to be closed for maintenance as there were
men working on the track. Red hot sparks started spraying down flame-thrower-like from the
centre span to the water - it looked like they were cutting something up. Shouts from myself
on the bank and from Bob and Terry on the coaching launch got the two approaching women's doubles
out of danger but it was a bit too close for comfort. A workman was eventually put out in a
dinghy but it looked like a case of horses and stable doors!
15th November 2005 Captain,
Terry Moore requests ----- It has come to my attention, from several members, that on
several dates the front door has been found not to be locked. Please can the person locking
up locks the front door.
14th November 2005 The
results from the Kingston Small Boats Head that took place yesterday have now been
published on the official website. The
result for the SWPS crews are -- WJ15 4x+, 29th overall (3rd of 7), 21 mins
10.0 secs -- Rachel Martin, WJ16 1x, 107th overall (1st of
5), 22 mins 55.1 secs.
14th November 2005 Craig
Twaddle emails ----- Just to say a big thanks to the Juniors parents who did some 'strimming-down'
of weeds and other tidying-up at the club on Sunday.
14th November 2005 Rob
Oades sends this report from Pangbourne Junior Sculls ----- A glorious day saw nine junior
crews compete for Staines Boat Club at the Pangbourne Junior Sculls held at Beale Park. Our
fastest crew of the day was Rob Oades & Tom Ryan rowing together for the first time competitively
at MJ16 2x. They completed the 3300m course in 12:23.8 coming 6th out of 14 (32/132 for the
complete division). Charlotte Morrison & Emma Parkes competed at WJ16 2x recording a time
of 13:45.2 (9/12 in event, 73/132 overall). James Kell came 16th out of 30 in his MJ15 1x event
(80/132) and Rachel Lafbery came 7 out of 13 in the WJ 15 1x (109/132). We had two competitors
in the MJ14 1x class. Tom Oades came 5th out of 8 in a time of 15:16.7 (106/132) and Gareth
Edwards came 7th out of 8 in a time of 15:40.7 (119/132). All very good rows.
In the third division Andrew Rozer recorded a time of 13:33.6 in the MJ18 1x event coming 25th
out of 29 (94/190 overall). Nick Pollen came 27th out of 36 in a large MY16 1x event, recording
a time of 14:08.2 (138/190). Finally Emma Corless rowing at WJ16 1x came 9th out of 19th in
14:19.6 (149/190). Again these were all very good rows.
Over subscription of the meeting meant that several of our crews were rowing up a year. It
is frustrating to note that if both Emma Corless and Tom Oades had been competing in their
correct age groups - both would have brought home gold medals, based on the times recorded
on the day. So overall a very satisfactory outing for the squad. They also excelled themselves
in the professional way they rigged/de-rigged boats and prepared for their racing. Well-done.
Thanks as always go to the coach's for their support - Ted Dyos, Jeremy Pollen & Bob (the
dog) Slade & the Goldswain's. Thanks to the parents for their help and support on the day
and special thanks to Jeremy for towing the trailer.
14th November 2005 The
results from the Veteran's Head of the River Fours that took place yesterday have now been

The result for the Staines crew is -- Staines, MVC 4-, start 26, finish 29 (5th of
8), 21 mins 59.45 secs.

and for back on land, especially if sculling or coxing. Be Safe! Thanks Terry

Dauncey has released the menu for

Sunday to observe a minute's silence at 11am. Boats out on the river are also encouraged to
stop. The silence is intended to remember particularly those who have died or suffered injury
in the service of the United Kingdom in the two World Wars and many other conflicts since.

6th November 2005 Adam Gill writes -----
Breaking news from the Gill household; poor old Diane has had yet another trip to A&E,
this time in Milton Keynes after a day's skiing at the snowdome. Apparently after just being
told she was the best in her class, she decided to try and ski down the slope, on her head,
somehow breaking her arm along the way. She will be down the club later this week, with
a marker pen awaiting signatures for her cast. It would seem that she
is taking the title of 'Person Most Likely to end up in A&E' from the University of
Newcastle Millenium Yearbook quite literally...... All togther now - GET WELL SOON DI -
(severe case of deja vue)
4th November 2005 Alex
Dent emails ----- An ex-member, Christine Farmer, has a wooden sculling boat to sell. It was
built for her when she was competing internationally, by Edwin Phelps of Putney to measurements
provided by Bob Janousek, who was then the National Coach. A guide weight would be 10 1/2 stone.
It needs a little attention but deserves a good home. So if you think you would value and cherish
it, please e-mail her on c.m.davies@rhul.ac.uk to
discuss it.
3rd November 2005 Our
ever
resourceful Secretary, Murray Litvak, has developed a new range of warning calls to deter the
ever present mute swans on the Thames. Murray recounts how the previous calls he developed
were becoming less effective so he realised that modifications had to be made. The latest calls
have evolved over the last 12 months and been tested to good effect on the river. Murray wishes
to market an audio CD and is currently looking for a company who can record and produce one.
If you can help then please contact Murray here.
2nd November 2005 Vice
Captain, Craig Twaddle emails ----- Lights are essential for those dark winter outings and
should not be considered optional. The club has a limited supply of lights and so established
crews are encouraged, where possible, to buy their own sets. Two choices for purpose made rowing
lights are Guardian and
Rowlight. A set can be obtained for around £20.
31st October 2005 Our Captain,
Terry Moore advises that Dan
Cleather of the English Institute of Sport, has kindly

before putting your hand down to push off…'
26th October 2005 Safety Adviser,
Mark Ansley-Watson writes ----- To
all club members who are intending to row during the evening this coming winter, please take
great care when out on the water. In particular please ensure
when going downstream that crews having passed under the Railway Bridge, turn immediately to
bow side and keep close to the bank. If you do not feel confident at steering in the dark please
book a coxed boat or make arrangements to do some morning outings where there is still more
light. All crews turning downstream of the railway bridge please proceed to the white house
below the bridge, the crossing point when coming in to the landing stage, where there is much
more light to be seen whilst turning. See Safety Page.
26th October 2005 Adam
Gill has submitted some photographs taken at last weekend's Head of the Charles. See
Photographs Page.
25th October 2005 Di
Gill sends this report ----- The
Head of the Charles (USA) results are now officially confirmed and the SBC HOCR 2005 Team have
just returned home. Both crews braved the stiff competition and took on one of the hardest
courses to steer in the world. Di Gill (cox), Sarah Tassell, Katja Norman, Suzanne Reng, Katherine
Cran, Julia Reichel, Claire Lovelady, Nikki Browning and Katy Young competed in the Club Eights
Event and Steve Tassell and Adam Gill in the Championship Doubles. Lucy Duncombe was unfortunately
unable to row at the last minute and became chief cheerleader. Also ill was Dom Foley, whose
bad back unfortunately prevented him from travelling. The Staines ladies eight came a credible
40th out of 50 crews in the Club Eights Event in a time of 19 mins 37.247 secs. The category
winners and winners twice previously, University of Tennessee, finished in a time of 16 mins
49.911 secs. The Staines gruesome twosome (who as a result of American
efficiency appear on the results as Upper Thames) came a credible 25th out of 27 crews
in the Championship Doubles Event, racing against the likes of Mexican and US national
teams, in a time of 20 mins 39.961 secs. The category winners and defending champions,
Ridley Graduate BC, finished in a time of 16 mins 42.342 secs. Full results can be
found here.
Interesting facts we learned whilst away:- Staines Boat Club is from Germany - Adam and Di
are Australian - "Party" sounds
much more exciting in an English accent.
25th October 2005 Our
Club Secretary, Murray Litvak has confirmed that he is now a fully qualified ARA umpire following
his recent practical examination. No doubt we will be meeting him face to face at the start
of some of next year's regattas!
25th October 2005 The

25th October 2005 Robin
Dunlop writes ----- Has anyone picked up a Concept 2 smart card, looks like a credit card and
slots into the Ergo console? I lost it Saturday morning down the club between 9.30 -12 and
I need it as it has all my ergo scores on!! Robin 07711 327192.
24th October 2005 Rachel
Quarrell's New Rowing Information
Page has this useful information ----- The Head
of the River Fours (UK) became oversubscribed at lunchtime yesterday and has closed its
entry list.
23rd October 2005 Rob
Oades (senior) writes ----- Saturday saw several scullers from Staines Boat Club compete in
the Weybridge Silver Sculls. For the women, Jenny Goldswain and Rachel Lafbery came 4th and
5th respectively in the WJ15 event (times 17:46 and 17:48). Rachel Edwards finished 6th in
WS4 in a time of 17:30. In the WJ16 2x event Emma Parkes & Charlotte
Morrison came second in a time of 16:08. It was good to see Charlotte competing again after
a lengthy absence due to injury.
The men had a very successful day with wins for our oldest
and youngest competitors. Ex-captain Steve Ballentine won the VetNovice Catagory in a time
of 15:07. Late on in the day Tom Oades won his J13 event in 17:26. Ian Grant came 7th in the
S4 race recording SBC's fastest time of the day - 14:42. Craig Twaddle also had a fine row
in the Mens Novice catagory recording a personal best time for the race 16:10. Good races were
also had by Rob Oades, Tom Ryan and James Kell. Rob came 7th in the J16 race and Tom 9th in
times of 15:19 and 15:27 respectively. James recorded a time of 16:26 in his J15 event.
Many
thanks as always go to the parents, friends and family who helped and supported our scullers.
Thanks also to coaches Ted Dyos and Bob "The Dog" Slade. Special thanks go to Sarah
Sweeney for towing the trailer. Full results can be found on the Weybridge
RC website.
23rd October 2005 Staines
Boat Club can now be found on Google Earth since increased definition has been added to the
West of London. To view Google Earth it must be downloaded (from here)
and loaded on to your PC. It works with a broadband connection since a large amout of data
needs to be downloaded. Once installed you can find SBC by clicking and opening this
link . By the way, you can even count the number of swans on the river at Truss's
Island!
22nd October 2005 The
results have been published for Weybridge Silver Sculls which took place earlier today. They
can be found on the Weybridge RC website.

Thanks Again, Liz and a very sore Matt!x
26th September 2005 Robin
Dunlop requests ----- Please post
this email sent to me on the website. -- Robin,
just thought that I may be in a position to help you or someone else doing the marlow tri with
the loan of some of the kit I have acquired. Of most use would be the tri bars I bought. They
are easily attached and dismantled and cost me just less than £60. Talking to
the triathletes at work, they reckon cycling in that sort of crouched position will save
you about a minute over 25km. If someone needs to borrow my bike plus shoes helmet etc. then
that's cool as long as they can arrange collection. My bike is a yellow Bianci and if you
think you are going to get more information than that then you are talking to the wrong person.
I can tell you though that it has no carbon fibre unfortunately and is probably fractionally
too small for me. Give me a call if I can help as I cannot guarantee when I can get to my
e-mails. cheers Tim (contact Robin for
Tim's phone no.)
26th September 2005 Terry
Moore writes ----- Calling all Pubs and Clubs crews. If you are still interested in learning
to row please come to the club on Saturday 1st October at 10:00am. If you have any questions

see you then. Terry

12th September 2005 As
a point of interest, the top broadband video download at RowTV for
the month of August was Staines winning the Womens Senior 3 Eights event at Peterborough Regatta.
With 154 downloads, it begs the question - why is it so popular? -- or is it just one person
who likes watching themselves?

introducing a Supplex one (same material as the green training all-in-one). In light of this change, Godfrey are sending me a suit to look at and wearer trial etc before
we continue with the order. I have asked Godfrey to go ahead with the rest of the order and put the order for the racing
suits on hold for the time being, so therefore hoody's and caps etc should be with us before
the racing suits. Sorry to inconvenience everyone, but as I'm sure you'll agree we want to
get the best deal for our club... anyone who is really unhappy, please email me on friar_tuck8@yahoo.com.

2nd September 2005 Captain
of Boats, Adam Gill writes ----- This is a busy weekend for all with the Pubs and Clubs Regatta,
so can all members when using the club for crew training, please be considerate for other members.
This mainly centres around equipment; please ONLY take a boat/blades if you have booked it,
and ONLY take the equipment you have booked. Make sure you stick to the times booked; there
have been several instances where crews have been inconvenienced because equipment has not
returned on time. Remember this is meant to be fun whilst competitive; lets keep the fun element
so there are no tears before bedtime! See you all Sunday at sparrows!

- As we are all well aware parking at the club is limited so please all encourage crews
and members alike to leave their cars at home where possible and not park in Riverside
Drive (a private road) on Sunday. People can park in neighbouring streets and car parks
to avoid clogging the area for residents and members alike.
1st September 2005 Steve Ballantine emails
----- A reminder to all members that safety is not optional when out on the river. It
won’t have escaped
your attention that the nights are drawing in and as you all know lights
are needed on
boats after dusk therefore the rule is simple no lights no outing. The requirement is
a white light on bows and stern, most people have bike lights etc… which will
do the job so chop chop sort it out before there is an accident. SteveB
1st September 2005 This
is a warning
for all crews training this Saturday. Spelthorne River Day takes place between 11.00am to 4.00pm

Twaddle sends this news ---- From
BBC News - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4197500.stm All
eight lanes of the M25 are closed after a lorry containing hydrogen peroxide exploded, police
said. The fire is under control on the vehicle which is at junction 13, the exit to Staines,
in Surrey. Thick smoke is billowing across the motorway and traffic is backed up to junction
15 anti-clockwise and junction 11 clockwise.
Surrey Police say no-one has been hurt but drivers are being advised to avoid the area. I
guess the roads around Staines will be bedlam and I wouldn't want to breath in any of that
smoke! Hydrogen Peroxide is nasty stuff - the navy used to have a sub called HMS Explorer
that was powered by it - the crew's nickname for the sub was HMS Exploder!
30th August 2005 Steve
Ballantine sends this extract of a letter from Gary Irvine ----- Congratulations to Staines

25th August 2005 Nick
Hadwen emails ----- Please can everyone in the men's Squad complete this
form and email it
to nickhadwen@tiscali.co.uk. There is soon to
be a coaches meeting and this information will let us know what your plans are for the coming
few months/next season, to ensure that we know what's going on at each level from the Novices
to Seniors. It is important if we are to ensure that the coaching plans we put in place for
next year enable the Squad move onwards and upwards and should take only ten minutes of your
time. Also if you are new to the club and have been waiting for the winter season to start,
now is your chance to say what you would like to do before things really get underway. If you
have any questions please let me know.
Please complete and return by 10th September.

24th August 2005 Di
Gill emails ----- The Committee would like to thank Steve Tassell for all of his hard
work in coaching the Staines Women's Squad over the past few years. Steve will
be hugely missed at the Club, particularly for his seemingly boundless enthusiasm
for organising the Women - which is no small feat! Please can all ladies in the Women's

23rd August 2005 Ian
Grant sends this report ----- After missing out at Peterborough, only a few senior crews made
the trip to Oxford at the weekend. In the single sculls, Mark AW was first up in the S4 1x
but unfortunately, after trying to recover from an illness was never really able to perform
to his best and lost to Wallingford, the losing finalist. After some advise from BTD, he
decided to pull out from his N 1x in the afternoon to try and recover for sundays racing. Also
in the S4 1x, Ian G managed to gain a row over in the first round, in the Q-finals, after a
terrible first stroke, managed to pull back and win against Filby of Reading by 2 lengths.
In the S-final, after another shocking first stroke, Ian managed to pull back level but in
the second half began to slowly drop back and lost by 1 1/2 lengths to Bateman of Bath University,
the eventual Winner. In the afternoon, Ian was racing in the S3 1x but again after a slightly
dodgy first stroke, he managed to pull back again but lost out by 1 1/2 lengths to Poulter
of Upper Thames. On the Sunday, after being over-subscribed we only had Mark AW racing in the
S3 1x. In the S-final he was able to gain a row over into the final, in which he was able to
hold of the opposition to win over Weaver of Lea RC.
This takes the Men's squad summer season total to: 23 finals and 9 wins.
Also racing on the Sunday was the WS3 4+ of Liz, Ali, Michelle, Leanne and cox Charlotte
in their first race since Staines Regatta. In their first round, against HSBC, the girls
slowly pulled away from the other crew over the 500m to win by 2 1/2 lengths. In the final
they faced Barnes Bridge ladies. After a restart due to a clash of blades, the crew held
their nerve to remain level, but after a crew member suffering a shoulder injury half way
down the course, our crew lost out by just 1/2 length. This takes the girls summer results
to; finals in every regatta entered except one, were they where racing above status, and
2 wins, at Walton and Bedford Quarts. The girls would like to thank everyone who has coached
and supported them this summer but give a special thank you to Charlotte their trusty cox and
her ever supportive Dad!
23rd August 2005 Carol
Goldswain reports ----- The
junior girls finished their season with some great racing at Oxford City Regatta this weekend.
On Saturday over the 1000M course they reached four finals with Rachel Edwards beating some
quality senior ladies to take the WS4 1x title. The WJ16 2x of Becky Corless and Rachel Edwards
lost in their final as did Emma Corless and Jennifer Goldswain. The WN 2x of Becky Corless
and Emma Parkes won 2 heats to reach the final coming out on top of some nasty clashing of
blades due to poor steering from their opposition. On Sunday over the 500m course the girls
reached 2 finals with Becky Corless and Rachel Edwards just losing out in the WJ162 x final.
In the last race of the day an exciting WJ14 2x final saw Emma Corless and Jennifer Goldswain
came through to beat Maidenhead's Nat Champs Silver medalist by 1 foot. Lisa Incledon and Rachel
Edwards won their first round in WS4 2x but lost to some tough opposition in the semi. Lisa
is now leaving us for a place at Oxford University and we wish her all the best and hope she
returns to SBC whenever she can. Rachel Lafbery and Becky Uwins this weekend have shown a marked
improvement in their racing since the beginning of this their first season. We are looking
for great things from them for next year. Special thanks go to all the parents who made the
weekend possible, Liz for towing the trailer and to Bob for his expert knowledge and encouragement.
There will be a junior Bar-B-Q for Junior squad members and their parents on Saturday September
10th. More details nearer the time.
Full results will be available shortly from the regatta website. Also
see photos from Bigblade and video clips from RowTV.

Bernard sends this ' Summer Holiday' report on behalf of the Sir William Perkins's
School Rowing Club ----- During
the school summer holiday the SWPS squad has had a number of successes. The first weekend
of the holidays we attended Molesey Junior Regatta, where we had 3 wins; the WJ12 2x, WJ12
4x+ and WJ15 2x. All parents joined in the family day out enjoying the good weather and a
fantastic SWPS bbq. The following weekend we competed at both Staines and Burway Regattas.
At Staines we had 4 wins; WJ14 4x+, WJ14 2x, WJ14 1x, WJ15 1x. And at Burway we also had
4 wins; WJ14 2x, WJ14 4x+, WJ15 2x, WJ15 1x. On the 6 th August we competed at Maidenhead
winning the WJ14 2x and WJ15 2x. Last weekend we went to Stourport Regatta, again a great
family weekend away. On the Saturday, over a course of 1100m, in torrential rain we had 4
wins; WJ14 2x, WJ14 2x invitation race, WJ15 1x, WJ15 4x+. On Sunday over a distance of 600m,
we had another four wins; WJ12 2x, WJ14 2x, WJ15 1x, WJ15 2x. Added to this, SWPS won the
Junior Victor Ludorum. See photo. This makes a total of 50 individual pots this holiday.

19th August 2005 Safety
Advisor, Mark Ansley-Watson writes ----- It has come to my attention that the Fire Extinguisher
has been half used. Whoever used it, MUST send me a report to Markwat924@aol.com so
I can action the re-fill. If it had not been mentioned in passing the extinguisher would have
been put back without anybody knowing and subsequently not be refilled. The reporting on safety
matters is not a naming and shaming, it is purely so we can keep everybody as safe as possible.
Please take the time and care to look out for your fellow members.
19th August 2005 Congratulations
to Michelle O'Riordan who celebrated her ('last one before she reaches 30') birthday yesterday.
18th August 2005 Craig
Twaddle emails ----- I know the area around Strathclyde Park quite well (my grandfather had
a farm next to the Clyde just a few miles upstream) and so if anyone who's going to the FISA
Masters in September needs any advice/help re.
accomodation etc. then they can drop me a line.
17th August 2005 I am
pleased to confirm the return to the area of Lord Staines following a spell
away in Canada. A long term supporter of SBC he has apparently been asking about Staines Regatta
and has promised to be in attendance next year.
17th August 2005 The
draw for this weekend's Oxford City Royal and Sprint Regattas has been published on the Oxford
RC website.
Staines have several senior and junior crews competing.
16th August 2005 Adrian
Tollett advises that the
draw for the 32nd FISA World Rowing Masters Regatta that takes place from 8th
- 11th September 2005 in
Strathclyde Country Park, Scotland, has now been published on the official
website. Staines are racing in four men's events and one women's event.
15th August 2005 Di Gill forwards
this invitation ----- Dear Staines, Molesey, London, Twickenham, Thames, Kingston,
We cordially invite you and your competitive coxed crews to the
inaugural "Vesta International Coxswain
Challenge", to be held at Vesta
Rowing Club on Saturday 24th September at 2.30pm.
Whilst it is a social event to encourage closer community amongst the
Remenham Clubs, it will prove competitive as we are expecting each of
the member clubs to field up to four coxswains each to engage in
serious contest to prove who once and for all, the Titan coxes of the
lower reaches of the Thames. The challenges will be varied, requiring
a combination of skill, mental strength and coercion - all qualities of
a good coxswain!
Do not worry if you cannot field four coxes since the impartial judges,
all to be chosen from Vesta membership, will be normalising the results
to ensure a fair playing field for the smaller Remenham Clubs. Prizes
will be given to the best club, and best overall male and female
coxswain. There will be no prizes for second place.
All crews are strongly encouraged to come to Vesta and support the
coxswains in their challenges! We will accept entries from competitive
and "retired" coxswains.
And if the challenge is not enough, I'm sure we will be putting on a
shot of evening entertainment to welcome-in the new season!
The entry form is attached, and
if you do wish to enter we would like these returned as soon as possible and no later than
17th September 2005. Please email entries to vicc2005@vrc.org.uk.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew MacMillan,
Vesta Rowing Club.
15th August 2005 Steve
Tassell sends his 'last report ever' ----- The weather was pretty
grim up in Peterborough this weekend, however, the racing was anything
but. Peterborough was the last regatta this season for the girls and provided some
of the best racing I've seen from the squad not just this season but in my four year tenure
at the club. On Saturday we were the first race off in Women's S3 eights, The Stig
(cox), Sarah Tassell, Katy Young, Suzanne Reng, Katherine Cran, Nikki Browning, Claire Lovelady,
Anna Behrendt and Bonny Howes. With the first crew going through to the final and second
placed the repecharge, it was important to get first spot. In what proved to be the
closest race of the day, Staines hung on to first place from Barnes Bridge Ladies. Next
up the eight split into two fours, Senior 2 (Sarah Tassell, Katherine Cran, Suzanne Reng
and Claire Lovelady) and a Senior 4 crew of (Anna Beherendt, Katy Young, Nikki Browning and
Bonny Howes). The senior 4 crew raced first and, in what turned out to be the toughest
heat with the eventual winners, lost out to Peterborough City and Nottingham BC. Next
the senior 2 four up against a strong field from Barnes Bridge, Twickenham and York City. The
four got off to a solid start only to 'let off the gas' slightly through the middle section
giving away a half length to BB and York. They put in a strong push with 150 metres
left to come back to level as they crossed the line. I think if we'd had a longer bow
section we may have got the verdict but as it was, York and BB went through to the final
with Twickenham in fourth. Last race of the day was the final of the Senior 3 eights. Staines
had posted the fastest time of the day by one second in the heat but with Nottingham and
Barnes Bridge posting times only a second slower it was always going to be tight. The
girls handled the pressure of favourites incredibly well charging out of the blocks like
a sprinter opening up a three quarter length lead in the first 200m. We held this to
the line with BB second, a great win and the happy loss of novice status for Anna Behrendt
and Nikki Browning. Nikki particularly because she has only been rowing a month! On
Sunday because of the qualifying win on Saturday we raced senior 2 eights and senior 3 fours. I'm
not sure whether the excessive alcohol on Saturday was the secret but certainly we raced
with equal ferocity, not being phased by the jump up in status. First up was the senior
4 (now senior 3) four. Racing against Milton Keynes, Reading and Tees RC. The
girls picked up where they left off the day before finishing in second place and qualifying
for the repecharge beating a very useful Reading crew. The racing then came thick and
fast with the repecharge race, the senior 2 eights heat race and the senior 2 four heat race
all within an hour window. The results respectively were a loss in the repecharge,
qualification for the final in the eights beating Auriol Kensington and qualification for
the final in the fours beating Sons of the Thames. In the final of the eights a very
strong field of Nottingham BC (who featured Helen Bloor who some of you may remember in her
successful career at Staines), Twickenham and St. Neots who had 4 GB juniors in the crew. For
me this was the race of the weekend, it was a complete race from start to finish which considering
the level they were racing and the relative inexperience in the crew the girls really
did Staines proud just finishing a length down off the other 3 boats who were pretty much
in a line. Last up was the senior 2 fours final which again was going to be a
close race with all the finalists finishing within a second of each other. Off the
start all the crews were level but as they moved through 150m Barnes Bridge took a slight
lead. The girls were right on the red line at this stage and really moving the boat
well. Pushing on to 250m and BB were extending a slight lead with York City showing
slightly in second place us in third and Twickenham in fourth. We came to push with
150m left and just found a bit wanting after all the hard racing through the weekend. The
result was a win for BB, York second and us third with Twickenham fourth. I have thoroughly
enjoyed this seasons racing right from the first race in the winter, the win at Remenham
Challenge the combined results at the eights head the numerous wins at every level local
and National through the summer it really has been a momentous season! None of this
could have been achieved without the girls and I thank each and every one of them for their
unquestioning dedication to some quite mind numbing training and completely unreasonable
requests from me. The coaches that have helped along the way, Dom Foley on the bank
and in the boat, Gideon Shalom for getting the lightweight girls into shape this summer and
Jo Hawkes for her support over the early part of the season and to the many of you who have
helped along the way. The support provided on the riverbank by so many of you but especially
Tom Blackman and Dom South, how you two kept yourselves from going insane with boredom whilst
waiting for the girls to race I can only guess...and lastly to Graham Carey for his religious
dedication to maintaining the club website and providing an excellent way of keeping everyone
in touch. I apologise profusely for my long mails and large photos but it's the best
darn boat club website ever! See photograph. Full results will be available
in due course from the Peterborough RC website.
15th August 2005 Some
people are having difficulty finding this Latest News page on the Internet. BT have a problem
with their web space server so as a result I cannot restore or amend any web pages but I cannot
contact an engineer to tell them about it. If I phone or email I get their support network
in India who have no technical knowledge and just read off computer screens. I have therefore
reluctantly moved the entire SBC website. If you are reading this then you have found it's
new home. If you hear of anyone who has a problem with the site then please let them know to
go directly to www.stainesboatclub.co.uk instead
of an individual page or relying on a search engine result. I will try to put a message
up on the old site if it is eventually fixed.
15th August 2005 The
Tideway Slug is updating
it's 'Club Hopping' page (see last
year's page). Perhaps someone would like to update Staines's entry to include the juniors
and veterans this time! Details to be sent here.
15th August 2005 Whould

14th August 2005 Ian
McHugh emails ----- I
came across a new piece of rowing terminology this morning. A "Twaddle" is the
act of sprinting through waist deep water to retrieve a lost sculling boat. After completing
the "Twaddle" it is customary to warm up in the Ladies Showers (apparently). There
was a full demonstration of this morning, but I won't mention any names as I was sworn to secrecy!

at the club. The event sees the return of the DJ from this years annual dinner, complete with
smoke machine and floor filling tunes! Look out for posters around the club - all are welcome.
Plus anyone with pubs and clubs crews bring them along for a few pints of dutch courage.....
Cheers! Bonny

9th August 2005 Katy Young reports
on behalf of the women's squad about Maidenhead Regatta ----- First to race was the S44+ crew
of Stig (Cox), Lucy Duncombe, Katy Young, Nikki Browning and Bonny Howes. In
the first round we drew Barnes Bridge Ladies. Despite getting off to quite a bad start
we managed to claw back towards the end and lost by only 1/3 length.
Next up was the S24+ crew of Stig (Cox), Sarah Tassell, Katherine
Cran, Suzanne Reng and Claire Lovelady. The crew raced well in their first heat against
Curlew RC and lead for the majority of the race to win convincingly by 3/4 length. Unfortunately,
they didn't quite find their usual race rhythm in the final and lost to Barnes Bridge Ladies
by 1/3 length.
Last up was the S38+ crew of Stig (Cox), Sarah Tassell, Katy
Young, Suzanne Reng, Katherine Cran, Nikki Browning, Claire Lovelady, Lucy Duncombe and Katja
Norman. This was a straight final against Maidenhead RC. A great start saw the
Staines crew take the lead by nearly 3/4 length. The pressure must have gotten to Maidenhead
as someone in their crew managed to catch a boat stopper which forced them to stop rowing. After
this the verdict was never in doubt as Staines confidently carried on to complete the course
and collect the trophyware!
9th August 2005 Ian
Grant sends this report regarding last weekend's Maidenhead Regatta ----- A handful
of crews of men's crews headed up river to Maidenhead Regatta on Saturday to provide some of
the closest racing of the day. First up were the Novice four of Damian M, Rob T, Adrian T,
Paul F and coxed by Ali L who were racing in the S4 4+. After a great start, the crew held
on to the lead with a great row to beat Curlew 'A' by 1 1/2 lengths. In the S-final, they again
got off to a great start to take the lead, but Sons of the Thames just managed to squeeze past
in the second half of the race to win by just 1/2 length.
Next up was the S3 8+ of Gary LJ, Joe W (late sub), Dom S, Damian M, Adam M, Dave D, Rob T,
Nick H and coxed by Lucy N, but for the second regatta running the crew were called back for
a re-row after racing most of the course due to a clash of blades near the start. Second time
running the crew got off to a better start to pull out a length lead, but unfortunately due
to Lucy not being used to the slower responding eight, the opposition managed to stay in touch
but the eight managed to hold on to win in a time of 1:38. In the final against home side Maidenhead,
the crew got of to a good start to take almost a length lead by halfway, but after a few errors
and the home support, Maidenhead managed to pull through to win by just under a length.
The S2 8+ of Andrew T, Joe W, Dom S (late sub), Ian G, Gary LJ, Dave D, Adam M, Nick H and
coxed by Lucy N had a straight final against another Maidenhead crew in the first race after
lunch. Maidenhead took a slight lead of the start but the crew began to creep back over the
course to for probably the closest result of the day with many supporters by the finish unsure
of the result, but unfortunately the result was given to Maidenhead.
In single, Mark AW first raced in the S2 1x managing to gain a place in the final after scaring
his opposition away, but unfortunately lost in the final to an experienced sculler from Reading
RC.
In the S3 1x Mark did manage to win a pot in the straight final against Guildford RC. Thanks
to everyone for their support during the day.
The full results of racing will be available on the Maidenhead RC website in
due course. Also see Photographs
Page.
8th August 2005 Bonny

He started on Monday from Lechlade and estimates he will be covering 15 to 20 miles a day so
he will be passing SBC possibly over the weekend.
2nd August 2005 The

here. There are several crews from Staines and SWPS competing.
2nd August 2005 Alan Douglas
