Gids, myself and maybe Dunk will be there at around 8.30pm and if any of you would like to come along as well this would be great. No need to reply to me on this occasion- just turn up!....it is that simple. There is no dinner planned for Thursday though if people want to go to the newly revamped Green Curry House after a drink then I wouldn't be one to complain. The next official SOBS dinner is scheduled for the first Wednesday in February- this is FEB 5th....Mark if off now in your new diaries...!! If I don't see you on Thursday and not at the weekend- Have a very Happy Christmas and New Year !! Cheers, Tim.

28th November 2002 From Sarah Fudge ---- Hi All, As some of you are probably aware the girl's squad are having a lot of difficulty finding someone to cox at the moment. It has got to the point where water training is going to suffer. As we all know, with the little time that we are able to spend on the water at the moment, that time is very valuable and we can't afford to miss a weekend. Therefore, what I am trying to say is if there is anyone out there who is not rowing this weekend but would like to lend a hand and boss some girlies about we would really appreciate it. It doesn't matter if your not cox size or if you don't have a big mouth, just someone to steer the boat would be helpful. Just think, you can get few drinks out of us in return at Ozzy Steve's Plum Pudding Party that's coming up (Plug there for you Steve!!). So come on brave volunteers. Getting in a boat with us isn't as scary or embarrassing as you might think. Look forward to hearing from a few of you (please) Thanks Sarah

The money will go towards extending their current facilities to allow for the increase in junior and female membership and promote access to the sport for adaptive athletes. John Van ingen, the clubs's treasurer says 'we are delighted that at last we can fulfil our ambition to provide the modern facilities that our members need. Overall this has been a five year project and we will always be grateful to the volunteer group who saw the project through to its conclusion.' The full cost of the extension is £453,000, and the additional funding comes primarily from members, supported by a loan from the Surrey County Council Playing Field Association. Padraigh Herlihy, Sport England development manager says 'the club has been doing some excellent work in developing the sport - encouraging more youngsters and women to take part. We are delighted to support the clubs continued expansion by providing this funding for its facilities.

15th November 2002 A timely warning taken directly from Rachel Quarrells New Information Page --- A UK warning, to anyone planning to use the Tideway this weekend due to flooding elsewhere. Apparently it's vastly overcrowded, which on its own means that inexperienced Tideway users MUST make sure they are properly briefed on where to be on the stream, and obey local customs about crossing points and overtaking. Added to that, though, the landwater coming down means that for a couple of hours after low tide the river is still flowing out in many areas: it takes longer for the tide to effectively turn in such conditions. This morning at 7:30am the tide began to come in at Putney while it was still flowing out strongly at Kew. In between were confusing conditions, during which the accepted policy is "stick right" and keep looking around, to avoid collisions. Note also that the river can be rising (due to an incoming tide) while the surface water is still slack or flowing out. Navigation depends only on the latter. Low tide at Hammersmith is predicted for around 7:15am tomorrow, so take care.

15th November 2002 My apologies for not updating this page fore some time. This is entirely due to BT having a problem with their ftp server. This has been ongoing for 2 days as I write!

11th November 2002 Sarah Fudge writes ---- I am planning on getting a team of people together to give the interior of the club house a lick of paint. I would like as many little helpers as possible please. I am thinking Saturday and Sunday after rowing this weekend (from about midday). Mike Piper is getting all the paint and equipment but if anyone has any paint brushes, rollers and dust sheets lying around, that would be helpful too. If you can help then please let me know. Thanks, Sarah

10th November 2002 At these times of high river levels it is worth noting the method of obtaining the latest advise. The following is taken from David Biddulph's River Thames Conditions page --- Flood warning summary for England & Wales, with link to flood warnings for EA Thames Region. [Bear in mind that these warnings refer to risk of flood levels, rather than to navigation conditions.] News from the EA on navigation conditions on the Thames is available on the infoline (0845 988 1188 then 1, then 011131 for warnings and flows, or by 011132 for works in progress, or by 011133 for events. Please check there for the latest situation & for the exact wording of the message from the EA.

8th November 2002 From Men's Coordinator, Alex Fitzgerald re. weekend rowing ---- The red boards are up at Staines due to the heavy stream. Therefore we are going to pack our boats up and go to Dorney lake. Stuart has very, very kindly agreed to tow at short notice. It costs £3.50 per person to row there, so please bring some money to pay. If we can still meet at the boat house at 8.00 and de rig the boats and load them, we will then go onto Dorney. I would like to have left Staines by 8.45 latest, actually let me rephrase that, we ARE leaving at 8.45 latest, therefore if anyone is going to faff, come down at 7.30 and start loading then!!!!! Please can people pass this round to other squads especially if you are planning to row on Sunday and need a boat up at Dorney and anybody I may have missed. Regarding the mens seat trials, the plan (circumstances permitting) now is to do these on Sunday. Dorney is a perfect place to conduct these and time will not be lost rigging boats in the morning. So please be at Dawney at 8.00 prompt on Sunday (hangover and all). (This also means Tim can actually be assessed for the first time this season!!) Robin, I know your usual plans for Sunday, please can you let me know what you are planning if you can turn up. Any queries, illnesses meetings! let me know if you can't make it. (last Thursday evening must be the busiest evening of the year as we had ergo challenges!!, which Staines wiped the floor with - you may or may not know) Cheers Alex FitzGerald

8th November 2002 Clare Wood advises that the red boards are up on the Staines stretch of the Thames so rowing is cancelled fot the time being. More news as soon as I hear any.
8th November 2002 FIREWORKS DISPLAY CANCELLED BUT PARTY GOES AHEAD --- Duncan Speight advises --- I regret to inform you that we are going to have to cancel the fireworks display on Saturday night. We have been looking high and low for insurance for the event but it would appear that all insurers bar one have pulled out of this space. Unless we are able to pay £420 in insurance premiums then we cannot hold the event. For us to break even on the night we would need over 120 people so it is too much of a risk for us to take. I suggest that we still have a party on Saturday night... invite your friends, bring some CD's we can still have a good time. Here's to lower insurance premiums next year!

8th November 2002 Paul Hopkins reports on The Great Veteran Ergo Challenge ----- Following the World Masters Rowing Championships in Prague, members of the Auriol Kensington veteran squad threw down an ergo challenge to the SBC veteran squad. Having accepted the challenge, 12 of SBC's finest went to Hammersmith last evening (7th November) to take on the Auriol Kensington elite in the Great Veteran Ergo Challenge. Members of each club were selected to contest 5 events - Vet C eight, Vet C four, Vet A four, Vet D pair and Vet C single sculls - with battle to be done between man and the evil machine over 2000k. The sum of the times of each crew member would determine the winner of each event. The fastest time of 6min 36 secs was recorded by "Beaver" (don't ask) from AK and hot on his tail was our own Alex Fitzgerald in 6min 37 secs, followed by Steve Ballantine in 6min 41 secs, Andy Murphy in 6 min 43 secs and proving there is still life in the old dog, John Lusty in 6 min 54 secs. Fine performances from all of the SBC crew members ensured they took a clean sweep, winning all of the events in style. Afterwards the victorious SBC crews were treated to some AK hospitality and "spag bol". It is hoped that this will become a regular contest between the two clubs during the winter months and a return match at SBC is planned for January. If anyone would like to take part in future Ergo Challenges please let Paul Hopkins know.

3rd November 2002 An email just in from Hayley Vrublevskis ---- Do you STILL have an SBC cox box &/or life jacket in your car? WHY??? If you were racing on Saturday, in the 4's Head, these items SHOULD have been returned to the club on Saturday evening!! As a result of your procrastination, coxswains, & the juniors rowing on Sunday morning, had to use old orange life preservers - this should not be the only buoyancy aide available to them!!. If you cannot take equipment back to SBC immediately after use then ask around to see who is going back to the club that day - they may be able to take them for you (NB: I know at least one member of every crew racing on Saturday lives near the club & could have taken a few minutes, on their way home, to ensure fellow SBC rowers had safety equipment for the morning) Please return ALL SBC equipment to the club on Monday ASAP. Thank you.

I was delighted with their performance and they fully deserved their placing. We did have a minor 'coming together' with a Southampton University crew who failed to move out of the way as we overtook them but no damage was done. 1st October 2002 Adrian Tollett reports. --- I don't know if you are interested in putting any of this on the Staines site, but I am very pleased to report that my crew "Billygoats 1" (with me at bow) won the Veterans category of the Cambridge University Alumni Regatta. This was approx. 700m upstream on the Long Reach, raced in eights. We raced a Selwyn crew "Degener8" and beat them 'easily' in a time of 2:02. Churchill then raced Downing, the winning crew taking 2:15, so we were deemed the overall winners by 13 seconds. We were pleased to note that the winners of the (young) Men's category, Caius, took 2:01 in their final. It just goes to show what you can do with a fit crew, a good cox and a bit of training !

1st October 2002 An email in this morning from Caroline Bowman reads. ----- Craig rows at Weybridge/SABC and has forwarded this on. Would it be possible to add to our Website? Thanks Cal (coxy lady). -------- Subject: [SABC - mail] Charity Auction I have been asked by Grainne McElroy (the wife of Olympic VIII coach Martin McElroy) to forward this message on. ---- Craig. Hi There, I know this is a bolt from the blue, but I am looking for a little help..... Cargill is involved in various community projects. Next month a team of us are going to Poland for a meeting. While we are there we will be renovating a facility for underprivileged children. We will do all the work ourselves (which will be interesting - most of the group are from HR) however, we need to buy some materials, and we are trying to raise funds through various activities. One of which is a silent auction of a tee-shirt signed by the Olympic VIII (and Matt Pinsent). It's beautifully framed with a couple of pictures of the crew. The plan is to split the proceeds with the crew's nominated Charity - The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research. The reaction has been somewhat muted here - obviously rowing is not a big draw, so I was wondering if you, your companies, or anyone else not on my distribution lists would be interested in bidding for it? Please let me know if you have any interest, or know of anyone who might. All the best & see you in November, Grainne (Grainne_Mcelroy@cargill.com)

9th September 2002 Alex Fitzgerald travelled to Prague a couple of weeks ago for a 'stag' weekend with several Staines oarsmen. They wrote the letters 'SBC' somewhere in Prague and intended to leave the World Masters squad photographic clues to its whereabouts and challenge the team to find it. Having not received the photographs the squad was left the impossible task of finding a 'needle in a haystack'. Rising to this challenge, the intrepid oarsmen set about locating this graffiti. Using years of experience and analysing the typical minds of junior oarsmen, the gutters and low life areas of Prague were investigated. This quickly led to one team, headed by Roland Wood, locating the graffiti at the summit of an old powder tower. The photograph proves the challenge was met!

9th September 2002 The Staines squad returned home from the World Masters Championships in Prague yesterday. No wins to report although good battles for places, mainly with the German crews. With no time to land and repair the crew of the D eight managed a creditable 6th place. See Murray Litvak's report due shortly on the Results Page. Also see the Photographs Page.

15th August 2002 Good news for our crews and supporters going to Prague taken From Rachel Quarrel's Rowing Service web site - 'A curate's egg of a report about the World Masters 2002 on the FISA site today. The good news is that the Masters regatta will go ahead without a problem, Lake Racice being unaffected by the Czech flooding. The bad news is that with several rowing clubs taken unawares by the floods, boats which were to be lent or rented have been damaged. Competitors are urged to bring spare boats if they have space and also to be patient: with the official website down and the organisers flat out coping with the situation, there are no details available yet on which crews will be affected but they will be contacted as soon as possible'.
