31st May 2004 Rob Oades reports on the weekend's racing
at Monmouth Sprint and Monmouth Regattas ----- Staines Boat Club Junior Squad
had another successful weekend racing at the Monmouth Regatta held this weekend.
On the Saturday (750m sprint!) we had three pots - Jenny Goldswain in the
WJ12 1X and Charlotte Morrison in the WJ14 1x. Charlotte then partnered Emma
Corless to victory in the WJ14 2x.
The Sunday saw another 3 pots added to the Staines Boat Club trophy cabinet
(races now 1500m). Steve Brett in the J16 1x and Emma Parks in the WJ14 1x
(by one foot). Charlotte Morrison and Rachel Edwards then won the WJ14 2x
final by 1.5 lengths against the second Staines pair of the two Emma's (Corless
and Parks). Well done to all crews - all members of the squad raced at least
one final this weekend. Particular congratulations to Emma Corless who was
racing up two years (J12 to J14). These 6 wins bring the Juniors winning haul
to 10 so far this season.
Finally Ted and Smiffy would like to thank all the parents who accompanied
the sqaud for their help and support throughout the weekend. I would also
like to thank everyone for making my birthday celebrations (twenty one again)
so much fun on the Saturday evening.
Graham Carey adds ----- The Vet D four also raced this weekend electing to
race in the younger Vet C category (non handicapped) due to no opposition
in their event. They won the first two rounds but lost in the final to last
year's National Champions and Henley Vet winners, Hereford RC. Results will
be available shortly on the Monmouth website.

30th May 2004 The draw for Walton Regatta, which takes
place next Saturday 5th June 2004, has now been published on the regatta organiser's
website.
30th May 2004 Adam Gill reports ----- The Metropolitan
Regatta at Dorney Lake is a big measure for crews gunning for Henley this
year, and all the usual big names were there battling it out. This of course
made anything Staines wanted to achieve even harder, especially when there
were some heats where you had to come in the top 2 out of 6 just to get into
a semi-final! Here a summary by crew:
The Senior 2 Coxed four from SBC's top eight had a tough round to start off
with, having to do battle with the likes of Leander, UL and Thames. Nevertheless,
they gave it a good blast being first out of the blocks and finding themselves
in the lead early on....but disaster struck then their 2 man lost his seat
(presumably through excitement) which unfortunately left them with an even
bigger job to do, but couldn't pull off a place in the final.
The Senior 2 Coxed four newly promoted from Senior 3 after last weekend's
win at Twickenham also had a tall order to come in top 2 as well, but the
competition again proved too tough.
The Senior 3 eight also had a big disadvantage, that being stern four had
to jump out of the above fours race run round with blades to the eight already
on the water and waiting for them, then row half pressure/firm to the top,
then race. Unfortunately, the fatigue did show and even with super sub Roland
Wood in for Chris P didn't manage to get through a round. Special interest
of mine was my brother in Senior 1 singles (Newcastle University) who had
a good row qualifying for the final easily...in fact so easily the last 250m
were spent chatting to the Mr Hopkirk from Molesey BC..this led to a cry from
Steve 6pk..'Stop chatting and start rowing'.
Next up was the Women's Senior 3 eight, rowing two status' above their status
of novice. The task was made even harder by having the eventual winners in
their heat, but they battled hard and finished just 1 1/4 lengths behind the
pack. Looking across the times from the other heats this crew was competitive
at this standard, definitely a good result!
Another crew rowing out of status was the Senior 3 coxed four, and they put
in another spirited performance battling with Thames Tradesmen but unfortunately
lost out; this suited sub Terry just fine - he had to be at a wedding in the
afternoon!!
Yet another crew who were understandably nervous at the sight of the competition
was the Women's Senior 1 pair; again out of status, AND rowing in heavyweight
competition but being lightweights. Having only had a few outings together
they had a comfortable row to qualify for the final; the final itself they
produced another good row beating the A crew from University of London.
Back to the men, the Senior 2 coxless four had a decent race, but they admitted
themselves they didn't row their best; I believe secretly some of them may
have been thinking about their next race, the big one, that being the Senior
2 eight.
The Senior 2 eight showed the rest of the club how to race at the Met, giving
all spectators a thrilling race; they surprised themselves by finding themselves
leading their heat with 500m to go, even after a shocking start. The guys
held on to qualify for the final by finishing third - just. In their final
they again surprised themselves by finding themselves 3rd with 500m to go.
Unfortunately they couldn't find that extra gear in the last 500m to follow
it through but a spirited row nevertheless!
Attentions now turn to Walton/Weybridge next week, especially now the London
Docklands originally scheduled for next weekend has been cancelled due to
insufficient entries. The full results have now been published here.
30th May 2004 Monmouth Sprint, Monmouth and Metropolitan
regattas are all taking place this weekend and this has already resulted in
some great racing from Staines crews. Reporters for these events are Rob Oades
for the Monmouth Regattas and Adam Gill for the Met. These more detailed reports
will be published here as soon as they are submitted. Saurday's Met results
now published here.
29th May 2004 Yesterday was the first day of the National
Schools Regatta with Sir William Perkins's School entering 2 crews, a J14
double and a J14 coxed quad. The quad came 2nd by 0.2 secs in the first heat
and narrowly missed a place in the final by coming 4th in the fastest of the
2 semi finals. The double came 2nd in the first heat and 3rd in the 2nd heat
earning a well deserved place in the final itself. After a brilliant start
when the girls were leading for a short time, the strength of the opposition
showed itself by gradually pulling through which resulted in the SWPS girls
finishing just behind the main body of boats. Full results will be available
shortly on the official website.

29th May 2004 Steve
Ballantine advises ----- We have a number of people contacting the club
on a regular basis asking about learning to row most of whom have only seen
the Boat Race, Olympics & an Ergo. It is important we capture these people
before we lose them as they will be filling your shoes next year as you move
on to even bigger and better things racing wise We cannot afford to make the
same mistakes we have in the past i.e. Think were alright because we have
a large squad now only to find we've all had enough in a couple of years time
and leave. So to the point of this notice is that I need volunteers to help
teach novice men and women the most basic level of rowing. So yes you are
qualified and here is your oportunity to give something back to the club.
The Plan starting Sunday 6th at 11am'ish ---I will host the 1st sessions,
the future success depends on your help on following Sundays and may be Wednesdays
in support of a coaching rota. I wait with baited breath! -- Steve.
27th May 2004 At last the swans that have been nesting
in the corner of the boat club grounds have seen the first of their cygnets
hatch. This evening the cob had 3 cygnets on the water while the pen was still
on the nest hatching the remaining 4 eggs. As the water level was so low the
cygnets were aided back to dry land by some kindly rowers. This is the fourth
year that this pair of swans have nested at Staines Boat Club despite all
the rowing activity which surrounds them every day. This is particularly apt
since the mute swan is the emblem of our club. I have posted 3 phographs taken
this evening here.
26th May 2004 Jo Hawkes emails again regarding the
recent Instructors Award course at Weybridge RC ----- I think I have passed
the course, I haven't heard anything to say I haven't! The assessments have
been sent off for verification! Others on the course: Hayley Vrubleskis, Sara
Sweeney, Pauline Martin, Terry Moore plus Jeremy Pollen & Rob Oades who
help Smithy with the Juniors. Weather was kind to us and Weybridge Rowing
Club was very hospitable, (fantastic homemade soup as well, courteously of
Caroline Turnbull - Weybridge member and course tutor. Saturday 15th May -
started at Weybridge with introductions & theory. After lunch off to Cranbourne
School for capsize drill. Weybridge had provided us with some new club members
who have not long started rowing but never sculled- these where to be our
guinea pigs- I think they enjoyed it! Along with this we practiced our throw
line technique on each other- I think some of us surprised ourselves as to
how fast we could pull people in! Sunday 16th, -was rigging practice - oh
how we laughed!!! Apologies to anyone who gets in a boat with odd rigging
- only joking! I think we have it straight in our minds now! Saturday 22nd
- firstly apologies to those who raced at Twickenham that we couldn't come
and support you, well done to those of you who won from all of us. We had
our first aid module, resussing dummies on the grass outside in the sun, the
tutor was very good, direct and to the point. More rigging practice. Sunday
23rd - Assessment day.
26th May 2004 Jo Hawkes emails ----- I am pleased
to tell you that we have now collected 1150 Kingsmill, Kit for Clubs tokens
between us - please keep collecting.
26th May 2004 Roland Wood reports that he tied some
boats on the trailer returning from Twickenham Regatta last Saturday using
3 of his personal ties. Unfortunately they have failed to materialise in the
storage cabinet which means that someone is still hoarding them in their car.
Would whoever the culprit is please stop being so selfish and start thinking
of their fellow rowers instead of themselves!
25th May 2004 John
Walton emails ----- Could you please advertise Peter Brett's boat (a 85Kg
Aylings, circa 1994, for sale at £1800) as Peter has asked me to try
to sell it for him.
25th May 2004 Duncan
Speight writes from Australia to say that he has again updated the latest
news on his and Jodi's web
site. The news this time is of them climbing volcanos and Duncan being
thrown off Banjo the horse!
25th May 2004 Despite earlier predictions, the swan
nesting on the club lawn is still sitting on her eggs. Hatching must be imminent
so watch out for the cygnets in the next couple of days.
24th May 2004 Craig
Twaddle emails ----- For Sale - White Staines Supplex Short Sleeved Top
with green stripe and club crest. It's size XXL which is too big for me. Normally
sells for £28 but I'm only looking for £18.
24th May 2004 The National Schools Regatta takes place

28th May, a J14 double and a J14 coxed quad. The first round times are 10.48
am and 11.06 am respectively. Full draw details are available on the official
website.
24th May 2004 Adam Gill advises ----- You've probably

and Metropolitan regattas
this coming weekend. The draws for each event should be found shortly on their
respective websites.
23rd May 2004 Adam Gill sends this extremely comprehensive
report from yesterday's Twickenham Regatta ----- So after the disappointment
of the Evesham weekend being cancelled earlier in the month, a large contingent
of SBC members trotted downriver to Twickenham Regatta on a chilly but sunny
Saturday. The course was a punishing 1250m, on a long left-hand curve with
a stagger to compensate for the inside lane advantage that prompted many discussions
as to whether it was enough; the result was that the racing was close providing
many exciting races. Here's a summary by squad.
Juniors (6 entries) There were a total of six junior entries:
Russell Vinson in MN1x lost out in a very close race in his first round
at the bright and breezy hour of 8am; Rob Oades annihilated his opposition
to win J14 singles, and showed everyone how to cross the finish line in
a single, by waving to the crowd; the girls always had a pot coming there
way as they made up all of the competition in WJ14 singles - however it
was Charlotte Morrison who prevailed. Total Pot haul - 2 pots.
Women (4 entries) The girls also had an early start, kicking
off with the novice VIIIs at 830am; unfortunately they also fell victim
to the curve of the course, losing by 2/3 length to Kings College, although
the eventual winners were heard complimenting Staines' technical exercises.
One of the two Novice fours entered successfully got through a couple of
rounds to the final of the novice fours, but again had to do all the hard
work round the outside of the bend and held on until the very end with Twickenham
winning by 2 lengths. The S4 VIII lost in the first round to the eventual
winners.
Men (7 entries) In a last minute decision, the whole of the senior
men's squad decided to race at Twickenham swelling the Staines entry to
21 crews. The men's novice 4 lost in their first round to the eventual winners
of the event from TwRC; the men's s4 four beat Cygnet (2L), then Haileybury
College (easily), but then lost out in the final by 3 1/2L. The s2 VIII
never really hit a rhythm and were knocked out in the first round by Wadham
College. Stuart Simms showed the s3 singles competition how to scull winning
two races by a 5 length and an easily verdict to take the s3 1x pot. Putney
Town, after the new found camaraderie with Staines from the previous training
weekend needed a sub for their s4 VIII; Dom South from the novice four stepped
up to aid them to victory over Wadham. This was Putney Town's first eights
win in three years, oddly enough since Staines in 2001.... The men's s3
four had a very close race against Kings College in the final, coming though
to win by 1/2L. The s2 coxed four comprised of the ergo kings from the senior
men's squad and were up against the mighty of Thames who had entered 3 fours
in this one event alone - they really wanted this one; Staines spoilt the
party by beating Thames B in the final by 2/3 length having been a length
down, a victory made even sweeter as one Thames member was overhead saying
'this should be easy' as they attached to the stakeboats! The result prompted
an approach from the Thames coach to the SBC men's coach Gideon wanting
to know what are training programme was to pull such as result out. The
s2 coxless four had a just as an eventful afternoon by beating Thames (again!)
to get to the final against TwRC which initially saw Twickenham disqualified
due to poor steering. SBC spoke up saying they didn't want to win it like
that, and requested a re-row which was granted, going on to win in another
thrilling race. These three fours all raced their finals consecutively in
the late afternoon and by winning them all led to interesting spontaneous
rant from the commentator singing the praises of SBC and our Ozi captain,
Steve. Total pot haul - 4.
Vets (4 entries) The Vet C IV unfortunately lost out to Thames
in the first round, but then doubled into a Vet C VIII to provide two thrilling
races, beating Twickenham in the first round by less than a length but then
losing out to a very accomplished Marlow in the final by 1 1/2 lengths.
The Vet D IV seemed to scare most of their opposition into submission by
firstly winning their first round by an easily verdict, then the rest of
the opposition scratched; this crew was the fastest four of the morning
of the regatta, including senior men fours. Total haul - 1 pot. The total
wins for the day were 7, plus the Putney Town helping hand and lots more
sunburn all round! ----- Full results are available on the Twickenham
RC website.
Also see Photographs Page.
22nd May 2004 Twickenham Regatta took place today
with some fine racing and good wins. Adam Gill's report will be published
here as soon as it has been received. ----- Full results will be available
on the Twickenham RC website
shortly. Also see Photographs Page.
22nd May 2004 Congratulations from all at Staines
Boat Club to Sarah Goldswain who yesterday celebrated her 21st birthday and
today at Coate Water Park recorded a win with her Senior 3 crew from Bath
University.
21st May 2004 Duncan
Speight writes from New Zealand to say that he has updated the latest
news on his and Jodi's web
site. The news this time is of them sky diving, swearing and selling Marlene!
20th May 2004 Craig Twaddle emails ----- For Sale
- Stampfli Single Sculling Boat, £700. 12 years old but has only had
around 2 years use. Will suit an 11.5 stone person. Currently at Imperial
College Boathouse in Putney. Contact Craig
for more details.
20th May 2004 Bob Slade reports that there were further
incidents of abuse and stone throwing by youths last evening on the riverbank
downstream of the club which was dealt with by the police. If you witness
or are involved in any future incidents then please call the police immediately
as they are fully aware of the situation.
20th May 2004 There are a considerable number of boat
ties missing from the cabinet in the boathouse. Would anyone who has ties
in their cars please return them today as currently there are not enough to
tie all the boats going to Twickenham Regatta on Saturday.
19th May 2004 Jules
Reichel emails ----- Hi guys and ladies! Just to let you know tomorrow
evening (Thursday) there will be a big dinner at the club for all racing crews
and whoever would like to join in. Anja and I will be cooking spaghetti Bolognese
with dessert. We will need FINAL figures by tomorrow 12 o'clock - no late
request and drop ins. If you are veggie please let
us know and we will cater for you! It would to good to see loads of you!
19th May 2004 Our Safety Advisor, Mark Rolt has just
released our Water
Safety Plan. This is an important safety document for our club and an
ARA requirement. All members MUST be fully conversant with it so please read
fully. It is also available as a Word document to print out here.
19th May 2004 Dreadnought, the unnofficial organ of
Putney Town Rowing Club writes ----- Hello Staines! great photos and report
on the training on Saturday, have a look at ours if you want on our unofficial
site dreadnought.org.uk.
19th May 2004 Would any members that are interested
in the ARA's Competition Review and did not attend the Dorney Lake meeting,
please note that there will be a presentation on the 1st June 2004 at Thames
Rowing Club at 7.30pm. These changes will fundamentally affect all rowers
so now is the chance to listen and possibly affect the outcome. Full details
are on the ARA website.
18th May 2004 Diane Yarrow emails ----- Marketing
(at B.
P. Collins) have asked me to co-ordinate an entry to the Anthony Nolan
Trust Charity Dragon Boat Race on 8th August 2004 at Marlow. Please could
you put a note on the website about this, so that I can see if anyone is interested
in entering a full team for SBC or in subbing into the work team depending
on how much/little response I get? The event is being held on Sunday 8 August
2004 at Higginson Park in Marlow, Bucks. I have checked and there are no Regatta's
that day, so I don't worry about incurring the wrath of any coaches! They
need teams of eleven people (ten paddlers and one drummer). There is an entry
fee of £220 per team (£20 each). Apparently there will be heats
throughout the day, ending with a Grand Final. The Trust promises attractive
(?) trophies and prizes for the winners and certificates for all that take
part plus a range of fundraising activities. "Participants and spectators
can relax on the banks of the river or view the fun from the park itself.
Family and friends can enjoy the wonderful food, entertainment and hospitality."
If anyone is interested, please could they email
me at work - . Thanks very much. Diane
18th May 2004 Steve
Tassell writes ----- Please note from today and for the foreseeable future
all boat allocation and boat booking will be done on a boat booking schedule
down the club. This will be pinned to the club notice board in clear sight.
It covers the peak times and covers all club boats. Should you wish to book
a boat please read the brief rules and regs situated next to the sheet first
but otherwise just put your name next to the day and boat you want so we know
who to contact should the need arise. We are having to do this due to record
numbers of active rowers currently (long may that continue). This does mean
however, that one shouldnt necessarily assume putting your name to a
boat means the boat is definitely yours to use. There is significant boat
sharing going on at the moment and so some compromise will be needed. Should
you wish to row outside these peak hours its reasonably safe to assume
boats should be available as before. Any questions about this please let me
know.
18th May 2004 Captain, Steve Smith advises that there
will be a short meeting in the clubhouse this evening (Tuesday) at 6.00pm
for SWPS coaches, teachers, and parents.
17th May 2004 Men's Coordinator, Robin Dunlop reports
on Saturday's training visit by Putney Town RC ----- So it was 'blades
at dawn' - quite literally for the mens eight who decided an extra outing
at 6.30am would prepare them a little more for the battle with Putney RC mens
squad. The Putney lads tried to convince us their motto was 'beers+pies+sex=their
squad' but we weren't so sure...... particularly as always SBC seem to breed
the shorter rower when compared to some of the Putney crew! A good morning
of racing was had by all and with crew shuffling and a succession of short
and longer 'races' meant neither of us had to load the boat trailer and trundle
home, heads down after the first race. Anthony Cake the Putney coach says:
"Just quick email to say a big thanks for a great day on Saturday. Everybody
really enjoyed it and even our Cox Sarah has now calmed down and stopped spitting
venom. Will defiantly return the favour, the obvious one is a couple of weeks
before the 4's head we can organize a timed invitational 4's head race with
food afterwards." The referred 'venom' is when in true Oxbridge style
the 2 eights knitted blades on the last piece, SBC down by 3/4 length after
a ropey start, crawled back to win by 3/4 length, with lots of effort and
a little intimidation by cox Cal.... well we have to replicate every possible
scenario for race day! Robin Dunlop See Photographs
Page.
17th May 2004 Twickenham Regatta takes place this
coming Saturday 22nd May 2004 with several (about 20) Staines crews competing.
The draw has now been published on the official website.
Staines are guaranteed at least one win as all 4 entrants in the W J14 1x
event are Staines girls. Adam Gill advises ----- Here's the first rounds only
- none are straight finals, so there should be even more racing on top of
this. Should be a good day out, will the weather hold until then...8.00 -
MN 1x (R Vinson), 8.32 - WN 8+, 9.12 - MS4 4+, 9.44 - WN 4+ (A), 9.48 - WN
4+ (B), 9.52 - MN 4+, 10.36 - MVC 4+, 11.04 - MS3 1x (S Simms), , 11.16 -
MVC 8+, 11.20 - MJ14 1x (? Oades), 11.40 - MVD 4+, 13.28 - WJ14 1x (Staines
v Staines), 13.32 - WJ14 1x (Staines v Staines) - looking like a Staines final
and pot then!, 13.44 - MS2 4+, 14.40 - WS4 8+, 14.52 - MS3 4+, 15.00 - MS2
4-, 16.24 - MS2 8+.
16th May 2004 I have posted a few photos following
yesterday's training visit by Putney Town RC ----- See Photographs
Page.
16th May 2004 The swans nesting on the club lawn are
likely to have some new cygnets shortly. Hatching is expected to take place
around Wednesday or Thursday this week (35 days from the date the last egg
was laid).
14th May 2004 Men's Coordinator, Robin Dunlop requests
that, due to the visiting team from Putney Town RC tomorrow morning (Saturday),
all members walk, cycle, park over the road etc. Please do NOT park in the
SBC car park or lane.
14th May 2004 Bar Officer, Terry Moore writes -----
I have decided that ticket prices for TONIGHT's Beer Festival will remain
at £10.00 per head. So please feel free to come to the club with friends,
family and/or crew. The beers on order are: ESB, 49er, TEA, Black Cat, Coastline,
Landlord and Maybee. Hope to see you all there. Have FUN!!!
13th May 2004 Congratulations go to Sarah and Dan
Spring who emails ----- Born on May 7th to Dan and Sarah Spring, William George
Harold Spring, Weighing 7lbs. Both Sarah and William are doing really well
and I'm looking forward to teaching him the basics of sculling as soon as
possible !!
13th May 2004 Bar Officer, Terry Moore writes -----
I would like to clear a couple of points up about Friday's Beer Festival that
have been misinterpreted with time. When you buy a £10 ticket you get
all the real ale you can drink! At £10 that is a good night out as we
start at 18.30 -00.00. All tickets reserved before Friday are at the £10.00
and £5.00 price. All money raised is for the club. Thanks Terry
13th May 2004 Another report of an incident involving
Tyson the aggressive mute swan has been received. Apparently a junior out
in a scull had her blade broken during the flying attack yesterday afternoon.
Anyone who has any more details is asked to contact the Swan Incident Co-ordinating
Officer, Steve Tassell.
12th May 2004 Rob Oades kindly sends an excellent
report on the Staines' juniors success at last Saturday's Avon County Junior
Regatta ----- The Staines Junior Squad had a great start to the season
at the Avon County Junior Regatta held on Saturday 8th May. The disappointment
of the cancelled Evesham Regatta was forgotten as all the squad performed
well and returned with seven medal winners. Steve Brett won gold in the J16
1x event as did Thomas Oades and Andrew Frost in the J12 2x. This was a special
result as they were rowing up a year. Russell Vinson won Silver in the Novice
1x. James Kell also won Silver in the J13 1x event. For the girls Charlotte
Morrison and Emma Parks won a Bronze medal in the WJ14 2x. Well done to all
the squad and especially to the medal winners.
12th May 2004 Steve Ballantine advises ----- This
Saturday, Putney Town RC Men's Squad are planning to join us for training,
a useful opportunity to return the hospitality forwarded by them every winter.
Therefore we need to leave space in the car-park (Planning to get the trailer
to drive straight in by the gates along the hedge) So it's time to break out
the bikes and running shoes for those of you who can and avoid parking in
the club (Saturday only)
11th May 2004 Will all committee members please note
that there will be a committee meeting at the club this evening at 8.30pm.
10th May 2004 Liz Bernard reports about Poplar Spring
Regatta which took place yesterday in which the W J14 2x of Sarah-Jane Gregory
and Vikki Wardle competed for Sir William Perkins's School. They came second
beating some very good crews. The results of the final are as follows ----
1st 4.01.12 Maidstone Invicta RC, --- 2nd 4.05.66 Sir William Perkin's School,
--- 3rd 4.11.45 Lady Eleanor Holles, --- 4th 4.12.13 Henley RC 'A', --- 5th
4.22.73 Dame Alice Harpur School, --- 6th 4.23.89 Surbiton High School. Full
results can be found on the Poplar website.
10th May 2004 Paul Goldswain has submitted 4 further
photos taken during and after Avon County Junior Regatta which have been added
to the bottom of the respective page. See Photographs
Page.
10th May 2004 NEW STAINES KIT ----- Remember,
anyone who wants to order some more kit for the summer should fill in the
Order
Form and place all orders by this Wednesday the 12th May.
9th May 2004 Bar Officer, Terry
Moore advises ----- The Beer Festival this Friday starts at 6.30 pm. I've
been advised that some people don't drink beer. For those people, the bar
will be open and serving drinks as usual. There will be non-beer drinkers
tickets available at £5 each! Look forward to seeing you there. Does
anyone want to help out on the bar?
9th May 2004 Steve Brett has published some photographs
taken during and following Avon County Junior Regatta yesterday. Steve has
kindly posted them on his web space and is the first person to do so. Well
done Steve!!! See Photographs Page.
Also have a look at Steve's own personal website.
8th May 2004 Avon County Junior Regatta, organised
by Avon County RC at Coate Water Country Park near Swindon, took place today
with some great racing. A report is still awaited for the Staines juniors
but Pauline Martin submits the following on behalf of Sir William Perkins's
School. ----- It has been a very good day for the SWPS girls, in spite
of the weather. The WJ 13 4x 300m of Emma Townshend, Bethan Roberts, Heather
Stevenson, Ingrid Barnsley coxed by Tommi Breslin gained their first silver
medal. Miriam Towie and Bianca Stewart, won a silver in the WJ14 2x 300 m.
Gold Medal for the newly formed WJ14 4x+ 700m, in their first event together
and looking very competent throughout, of Rachel Martin, Nell Bond, Sara Daley
and Miriam Towie coxed by Tommi Breslin. Sarah Jane Gregory and Vikki Wardle
progressed through the semi final and gained silver in the WJ14 2x 700m final.
In addition to the medal winners, Bethan Roberts and Emma Townshend, WJ13
2x 300m, in their first regatta rowed well. Eleanor Hudson in WJ14 1x 300m,
her first single event at a regatta, also did very well. Competing in the
final event, the WJ14 1x 700m, Vikki Wardle and Sarah Jane Gregory, shortly
after the double event, and Rachel Martin against seven other entrants. Rachel
Martin got through the heats and semi final and came fourth in the final.
This shows the depth of strength in the squad and is a credit to the coaching
team. (Thank you) Pauline The full results will be available shortly on
the official
website.

26th April 2004 The agressive mute swan, nicknamed
Tyson by one member, has been wreaking more havoc on the Thames this week.
Numerous reports have come in to Steve
Tassell concerning further attacks on crews and boats. One crew reports
being attacked twice. The first flying attack knocking the oar from the rowers
grip and during the second, in the middle of a racing piece, the swan landed
on the stern post leaving feathers caught in the rudder pivot tube. One girls
crew reportedly is refusing to train on this stretch of river. Staines member,
Craig Twaddle, has suggested the use of the Phalanx
or Goalkeeper
'last chance' defence systems but this is thought to be overly heavy handed
in the circumstances. Our Secretary, Murray Litvak, famed for his ornithological
warning calls is currently working on a new improved deterent alarm call.
25th April 2004 Vikki Wardle and Sarah-Jane Gregory
from Sir William Perkins's School raced in the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta
at The National Watersports Centre Nottingham today. Schoolteacher, Liz Bernard,
reports the WJ14 double scull girls put in a sterling performance to gain
a place in the Grand Final from 12 entrants. In an outstanding effort in the
final, the girls were leading at the 500 metre mark but the excellent opposition
came through to leave them 4th overall, finishing in a time of 6 mins 22 secs
which is a great performance and a credit to their school given that they
only started rowing last May. The winning time was 6:12, second 6:17 and third
6:19. One of their coaches, Graham Carey commented that the girls have been
getting faster and faster and that he has high expectations from them in the
coming regattas especially at the National Schools Regatta that takes place
at the end of May.

take place around the 20th May (35 days from the date the last egg was laid).
25th April 2004 Jules Reichel reports ----- The annual
dinner dance took place last night at Dorney Lake. The evening started on
the balcony where around 90 guest gathered for the champagne reception. The
beautiful weather and exeptional temperature set the evening off well with
lots of non members and particularly new SBC members being welcomed by the
club. The dinner started with our Captain, Steve Oz giving a brief but excellent
speech outlining our achievements for last season as well as giving lots of
encouraging words for the coming season, commencing next weekend. He proudly
presented the following awards: Steven Brett for outstanding achievement within
the junior squad. Unfortunately Steven was not present to receive his prize.
Caroline Gill received a big thank you award from SBC, not only for her outstanding
performance as our Social Secretary, but also her incredible commitment to
the Novice Womens squad as their main coxswain. Another thank you award was
given to Terry Moore for his commitment to SBC and his ongoing contribution
to the club as bar officer. Dinner commenced promptly and consisted of beef
in red wine sauce or fish with sun dried tomato tapenade followed by with
rasperry torte or chocolate roulade. After dinner the raffle was held of which
the main prize consisted of Steve C AKA 6PK who will be cooking a 3 course
dinner at the winner John Walton's house. Other prizes such as one months
membership at Holmes Place, cinema tickets, as well various bottles were up
for grabs and claimed by various members such as 6PK, Katie, Cath and Elaine.
The evening promptly moved on to the dancing, entertained by an excellent
live band with a repertoire ranging from Abba to general 70s, 80s and 90s
music. Alongside the dance floor there was roulette to be played. The womens
novice squad would like to award their coach Steve Tassell with a special
thank you for his outstanding entertainment value whilst scaring off the fellow
dancers on the floor with his uncontrolled John-Travolta-moves. Further to
the mens squad seat trialling earlier in the day, their coach Gids Shalom
received a special "thank you" - being bumped 24 times..... just
to remind him off every 1K the boys had to race during the scorching head
of the day. Luckily he did NOT end up in the lake as promised and continues
coaches with all limbs attached. All in all the evening was a total success
with full compliments - once again - to Caroline Gill whose excellent organisation
skills ensured a memorable night.
23rd April 2004 The Thames

invited to attend this meeting.
22nd April 2004 Steve Tassell requests ----- Would
any of the current Staines members of Remenham Club be prepared to entertain
other, non Remenham Staines members as guests. We have had a massive intake
of new non-Remenham members over the last year and many of them are very keen
to participate in the Henley experience. In particular there is a demand for
the Saturday at Henley Royal Regatta so if you can help out then please let
me know as soon as possible.
21st April 2004 Steve
Ballantine advises that, in order to give people enough notice, the next
coaches meeting will take place on Wednesday 28th April at 8.00pm.

20th April 2004 Caroline Gill writes ----- The bar

until 6.30pm. If you are going on the coach to Dorney please make sure you
are there by 6.30pm at the very latest (but earlier if you want one or two
drinks first!). Please note that the 53-seater coach to Dorney is now almost
full so unless you have already told me that you will be on the coach or have
indicated on the ticket application form that you want to be included (check
with your table coordinator if you are not sure), there probably won't be
space for you. If your plans have changed and you no longer want to use the

20th April 2004 Rachel Quarrell's Rowing
Service has an interesting link to Bill Atkinson's rowing
research page. Now you can argue with authority about shell hydrodynamics
or oar length and lever ratio. Beware though, some knowledge of mathmatics
may be helpful!
19th April 2004 With the upcoming dinner dance and
the regatta season not far away, it is timely to remind all you photographers
how to add your photographs to this web site. Please see
this link, which is also on the Photographs
Page, that explains how to upload your images to YOUR web space. So before
you send me your snaps of Dorney or Evesham, please think again and have a
go yourself.
17th April 2004 Sad news for regular Staines competitors
at Evesham Regatta. The 600 year old Fleece Inn, just up the road at Bretforton
and one of the country's best and most charismatic pubs and the Saturday evening
favourite for SBC crews, has suffered a major fire which has extensively damaged
the building. The good news is that the National Trust will be rebuilding
it and are committed to it being fully restored. More information on the Fleece
Inn website.

race . regards Simon
13th April 2004 Duncan
Speight writes from New Zealand to say that he has updated the latest
news on his and Jodi's web
site and also added a few more photos. The news this time is of a new
van called Marleen and a killer bike ride!
11th April 2004 Steve Tassell advises ----- All crews
boating at the far end of the landing stage (furthest away from the club house)
must pay special attention to the scaffold poles protruding from the water.
These have recently become exposed and there have been several incidents of
damage to the stern of boats where the boats have floated onto the scaffold
poles and are damaged as the crew get in pushing the poles through the hull.
Until further notice please try to boat as far toward the club house end or
make sure the boat is clear of the landing stage as you get in.
10th April 2004 I am pleased to confirm that the pair

his very generous ' selected drinks for £1 ' sale. Please help Terry
be a happy man and drink the bar dry!
6th April 2004 Thanks this evening go to sculler Chris
Little who decided to bodily test the temperature of the Thames. His answer,
after rowing back to the club, was unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately)
inaudible due to him shivering!
6th April 2004 Following the bad weather yesterday,
the SWPS training was moved at lunchtime today from Dorney to Staines. The
new riggers were fitted to the eight and the octuple was taken out on the
water. This, as far as is known, is the first time that an Octuple has been
rowed at Staines. See photo.
5th April 2004 The 3 day Sir William Perkins's School
Easter Rowing Camp at Dorney Lake started today. Twelve girls that have been
rowing since May of last year were joined by five (year 7) newcomers for this
concentrated rowing programme. As well as two rowing coaches from Staines
Boat Club, Graham Carey and Gideon Shalom, the girls were taught by two resident
coaches. Firstly, Terry Hunter, Dorney Lake's Rowing Coach who provided excellent
technique advise for all the girls and secondly, Nigel Weare, the recent ARA
National Coach and currently the Development Manager for Dorney Lake. Despite
windy conditions, the girls were presented with a fantastic opportunity to
learn an enormous amount about rowing. Everyone agreed that this was a valuable
day and a great initiation for the new girls into the sport of rowing. Two
teachers from SWPS, Liz Bernard and Sara Sweeney, also decided to take to
the water in a double scull. They were just demonstrating their prowess at
rowing when they promptly turned the boat over and fell in which caused a
certain amount of amusement amongst the girls. The course continues tomorrow.
See Photographs Page.
5th April 2004 Caroline Gill emails ----- I am in
the process of organising coach transport for the dinner dance. This will
pick-up and drop-off at the Boat Club, with other possible stops in Chertsey/Egham/Datchet

to the ARA Competition Rules of Racing that come into effect today. Read them
on the ARA web site here.
1st April 2004 Steve Tassell reports that there have
been more attacks by the aggressive cob mute swan of late. It has taken to
landing on the blades of passing boats and often takes off and flies for some
distance to attack it's victims. Lurking anywhere from the railway bridge

you have any suggestions as to what can be done to calm this vicious animal
down then please let Steve know.

With most of us training now during the week, we hope top see even more faces

Mark Cashen writes ----- I read an excellent article on the CRASHB's
(I now know what acronym it stands for!) in the paper version of the Times
today. I found it online here.
Here's a taster: -- Jurgen Grobler has an expression for the exquisitely
painful moment when the oxygen runs out and the vision starts to blur: Here
comes the man with the hammer. ...... Hammering yourself out on the
anvil of the ergo is an anaerobic ordeal not unlike sprinting 2,000m while
holding your breath. By the end, the leg muscles are putty and the brain is
shutting down in self-defence: Some people see spots, says Alex
Skelton, of Concept UK, a 27-year-old lightweight with a personal best of
6min 30sec. Others, he adds brightly, see nothing at all.

Following the cancellation of the Thames Upriver Trials at Dorney Lake
on 21st March 2004, the organisers have just announced the selection of crews
to compete in the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta to be held on Sunday 25th
April at The National Watersports Centre Nottingham. I am delighted to report
that, based on their performance in recent heads, the double sculls comprising
Vikki Wardle and Sarah-Jane Gregory from Sir William Perkins's School have
been selected to race in the WJ14 event. This represents a major step forward
for the school since the inception of their rowing activities at Staines Boat
Club only 10 months ago and congratulations must go to the girls for their
hard work and perseverance over recent months.
26th March 2004

Alan Douglas writes concerning yesterday's Veteran HORR -----
Here
is a photo I found of the VIII from Sunday, care of Nature's
Images, taken just below the finish at Hammersmith Bridge. Unfortunately,
it does not show the true horror of the conditions which existed in the marshalling
area up to the Black Buoy, Hammersmith almost to the Bandstand and from Barnes
up to Chiswick Bridge. Sitting in the marshalling area, the waves were just
rolling in over both sides of the boat. Having said that, the race was probably
one of our best quality outings we have managed all winter and I'm pleased
with the result. In addition to the formal sinkings reported by the BBC and
other press, there were numerous others we saw who crept to the bank to unload
excess liquid ballast. In excess of 40 boats out of a scheduled 160 or so
starters either did not start or did not row out even the shortened course.
Alan also wrote previously ----- We were ok, just. Conditions were
terrible, but Clare did an excellent job of keeping us as close to the right
place as possible in marshalling and, even more amazing was that her voice
remained calm throughout - even if her face portrayed the true horror of what
was being blown towards us (but only I could see that). We made it back to
Putney Town very cold and very wet but in one piece. Proper sinkings included
Weybridge - possibly the crew which included Pete Lipscomb (now all confirmed
safe) - and many other struggled to the bank to empty out before they actually
did sink. Talking to someone who was rowing in one of the very high numbered
boats, conditions in the marshalling area for the higher numbered boats were
even worse than we encountered and the reason many did not actually start
(about 40 from 160) was because they were swamped by the time they reached
the start. The crew my friend was in had to drift to the bank just up from
the Black Buoy to empty out before continuing up the course. Fortunately,
they were in a Janousek, like us, so did not sink properly, just floated at
surface level. Probably the worst river conditions I have ever been out in
on any river.
22nd March 2004
Helge Neumeister emails ----- I found a ring in the Men's changing

A reminder that the preparations and training for the BBC's
"The Other Boat Race" will start with a programme televised today
on BBC3 at 9:00-9:30pm and on subsequent nights (Tuesday 23rd 8:30-9:00pm,
Wednesday 24th 8:30-9:00pm, Thursday 25th 8:30-9:00pm, Friday 26th 9:00-9:30pm).
This is part of the BBC boat race coverage and the race will be shown the
night before the 'proper race'. The crews are comprised of media celebrities
who also attended either Oxford or Cambridge universities along with Staines
Boat Club's own Trisha Corless. Some of the early training of the Cambridge
crew was filmed at Staines and John Lusty and Paul Hopkins may be seen rowing
in some of the boats. Other Staines members were also helping by driving the
coaching and safety launches.

21st March 2004
The 22nd Vesta International Veterans' Head Of The River Race
For Eights that took place today in very windy conditions had one Staines
Vet C crew entered. The race was shortened due to the weather so it started
from Putney and finished at Hammersmith Bridge. Coxswain, Clare Wood reports
that the conditions were so bad that she was frightened for her crews safety.
She described the conditions as appalling and believes the race should not
have taken place. Apparently there was no obvious marshalling above the start
with crews struggling to hold their boats in position in the high winds for
over an hour and were in jeopardy of swamping as they turned into the waves.
Several boats were seen to sink including ones from Putney Town and Weybridge.
The Vet G Weybridge crew were rescued but their boat was lost for a time.
Clare cannot confirm whether all participants were safe and is concerned that
many of the people in the water were quite old. Many boats took on a great
deal of water including the Staines boat. The results are ---- Staines
Vet C Start 45 Finish 37 (11th of 41) 7mins 52.2 secs. This was an excellent
result for the Staines crew in the circumstances. The full results (how many
stayed afloat and how many sunk) should be available on the official
web site shortly. Let us hope that there was no loss of life. See BBC
news item.
21st March 2004
Unfortunately the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta Thames
Upriver Trials that were due to take place at Dorney Lake today were cancelled
due to the high prevailing winds. Sir William Perkins's School had a quad
and a double entered in the WJ14 category and they and their team were very
disappointed that they could not compete. The organisers have decided to use
the results of the recent School's Head of the River for the selection of
representative crews and therefore the SWPS girls are unlikely to be selected
despite their promising placing and time.
20th March 2004
HEAD OF THE RIVER RACE 2004 STATEMENT
----- The 2004 Race has had to be cancelled. The extreme wind and water conditions
in the middle of the course and in the marshalling area meant that the Race
could not be run safely. This view was fully supported by the PLA and the
safety services. The Committee has decided that crews can either receive a
full refund, or a free entry to the next year's event.
19th March 2004
In view of the high winds expected over the weekend and the
possibility of cancelled racing, the HORR
website has a 'Race On', 'Race Off' announcement. This will allow racing
crews and supporters to get up to date information before leaving home on
Saturday. The Vets
HORR website is currently not operating the same system but it would be
worth checking if there is any doubt about the weather conditions.

1 on Saturday 27th March (6:00-7:00pm) with another BBC 3 programme following
on immediately afterwards (7:05-8:00pm) to show the aftermath and post-race
party/recriminations/elation (UK).

The Schools' Head of the River took place today with a single WJ14
coxed quad entered from Sir William Perkins's School. In sunny, warm and breezy
conditions the girls rowed extremely well to finish 89th overall and 4th out
of 20 in their category beating some good quality quads. The crew of Bow-Rachel
Martin, 2-Sarah-Jane Gregory, 3-Vikki Wardle, Stroke-Nell Bond and coxswain
Daisy Corfield finished in a time of 10 mins and 18 secs. This was only their
second outing on the Tideway, their first being 2 days ago! This represents
a tremendous achievement given that they only started rowing 10 months ago.

March on the Tideway. Sir William Perkins's School are entering their successful
WJ14 Quad which won at Molesey V&J and Weybridge V&J heads recently.

Adam Gill advises ----- The draw for Kingston Head of the River
is now available here.
We have three eights entered; the first and second eights from the Men's Squad
and the Women's Novice eight. The draw is an interesting one....the 1st VIII
will be going off no 13 (unlucky for some?) with the Army right behind (I
believe Captain Jon Flynn will be in this boat - but I could be wrong); the
2nd VIII (no 25) will be starting right behind Goldie BC (this boat is usually
the guys who didn't make it into this year's blue and reserve boats); the
women's novice VIII (no 64) will be starting at the front of the women's novice
pack, chasing some Men's Novice boats - I wonder if they can repeat their
feat from Wallingford last December and overtake one? Let's see if London
'A' can manage to get themselves disqualified again this year for going taking
an illegal line round an island, and if so how many boats will follow (Thames
'A' did last year resulting in the same punishment)....all could lead to an
interesting day.

of Paul Hopkins and Captain, Steve (Oz) Smith in the next few weeks.

If you have not experienced the aggresive cob swan whilst out
on the water then you can count yourself lucky. Lurking roughly between the
Church and Riverside Flats several rowers have reported attacks. Often the
swan will appear coming into land directly on a boat only veering at the very
last moment. This can be disconcerting in a four or eight but potentially
dangerous in a single as landing on scull could result in a swimming lesson
and a pecked head. Anyone with concerns should contact our Secretary, Murray
Litvak who has developed a range of vocal calls that deter mute swans
in particular.

are now in New Zealand and have updated their website
today.
7th March 2004
Weybridge Veteran and Junior Head took place today with 2 Staines
crews and 2 Sir William Perkins's School crews competing. Excellent racing
from all crews resulted in wins for the Vet D Coxed Four and the SWPS A WJ14
Quad. The Vet D Four were obstructed for the 2nd head in a row, this time
by a Molesey novice veteran womens crew who decided to change which arch of
Walton Bridge to pass under and steered 45 degrees across the course resulting
in the Staines crew having to reverse their boat out of the situation. The
crew missed out on trophies after the shield and tankards were withdrawn by
the organisers after two other crews in the division pulled out on the day.
This was surprising as enough crews had entered the event to qualify the event
for trophies. The SWPS A quad had a fantastic row coming nearly a minute in
front of the next fastest crew, St. Edwards School. It will be very interesting
to see how this ever faster girls crew perform in the Schools Head of the
River on the 16th March. Also racing well today were the Staines WJ14 quad
coxed by Becky Corless and the SWPS B WJ14 quad who were also coxed by Becky
in the second division. They both showed great promise and gained much experience
from the day. There was also a win for SWPS teacher and Staines member, Liz
Bernard in the WomensVet C Coxed Four rowing for Molesey BC. The full results
will be available shortly on the Weybridge
website. A few photos of the SWPS winners can be found on the Photographs
Page.

with 2 Staines crews competing. Results are -- Staines A (S2) Start 107 Finish
189 (38th of 40) 22 mins 15.1 secs and Staines B (Nov) Start 271 Finish 216
(7th of 13) 22 mins 41.61 secs. S2 crew member, Anne Uttley reports -----
The SBC WS2 received huge support today from Bob and I just wanted to place
on record our thanks to him for being such an uplifting spirit and helping
hand. And special thanks also to Sara Sweeney our - it was a talking point
she'll admit - breastfeeding cox ( 2 month old son at home) for such a great
race. And to all the members of the club for their part. We suffered an unfortunate
collision , despite the best efforts to avoid, when we were overtaking a crew
and another (v abusive) overtaking crew sandwiched us together to a halt which
cost us 20-30 seconds in the run up to Fulham. We dug in to a racing start
and went for it. Sarah Fudge who rowed with us once before the race and subbed
in to fill Clare Wood's seat at stroke deserves a huge pat on the back. We
had a great day, and despite the many hurdles to get there, it was worth every
minute. Best wishes, Anne. -- Photographs should be available shortly

Leanne Johns writes regarding the Women's Eights Head -----
Just been conferring with Caroline and due to the late start of the race this
year and to aid those unable to make it to Putney due to other such commitments
(i.e. Rugby!) we thought it probably easiest if we all celebrate how well
we did in The Swan in Staines and then find a local curry house. I would imagine
we won't make it back to The Swan until 7.30-8ish. For those of you wishing
to come along and support on Hammersmith Bridge the race starts at 3.30pm
and Staines Numbers are 107 and 271. Hope to see you all there, Leanne &

pasta evening has been changed to THURSDAY nights now. However, due to the
WHORR, THIS THURSDAY THERE WILL BE NO PASTA! We hope that will enable even
more members to stay and eat with us especially now that we can start thinking
about getting on the water again regularly in the evenings! I hope the "menu"
we have drawn up has something for everyone - please don't hesitate to ask
if you are veggie and there is meat /fish dish. We are VERY happy to accommodate
anyone. On that note - THANKS TO EVERYONE, the situation in the kitchen has
GREATLY improved with everyone cleaning up a bit better and as a result of
excellent returns from pasta and the biscuit-chocolate box we have been able
to purchase the new cooker in the kitchen which was kindly made available
