30th June 2003 Due to a '2 day' row from Staines to Henley (Monday - Tuesday), I will not be able to update the web site. Please continue to send information as normal as I will bring up to date as soon as I return, sobriety permitting!

30th June 2003 Steve Tassell writes ----- I am selling my trusty mountain bike after several years of loyal service, our relationship took a decided downturn when before the London to Brighton bike ride two years ago I decided to service it myself…needless to say it’s not been the same since. The love affair came to an end when today my gear shift decided to explode leaving a trail of cogs, nuts and washers! Although I could repair the old girl I need a trusty steed pronto for my coaching duties so am looking to get rid of this in favour of a shiny new one. It’s a top of the range Saracen (frame, brakes, tyres, chain and peddle cogs in good condition) and only 6 years old, I’ve taken it into Halford’s and had it estimated at costing £30 to put right, it’s yours for £25 ono. Please contact me on steventa@microsoft.com or 07802881857 if you’re interested.

29th June 2003 Peter Lipscomb emails ----- I have one ticket for Remenham to sell for Saturday my phone no. 0127633509 £16-00 or near offer thanks Peter

29th June 2003 Egham Regatta took place today with some fine racing. Alison Bond reports that the Senior 3 mens four of Fikret, Luke, Stuart, Helge and coxswain Hayley won their final in an exciting race against Windsor Boys School. In the womens Novice sculls, Chrissie Speight narrowly missed a trophy in her first ever regatta in this event. She had a nail biting final but eventually lost to a girl from Eton Excelsior. The Sir William Perkins's School crews also did very well in their heats, this being the first competitive event for the school since adding rowing to their list of extra curricular activities and teaming up with Staines Boat Club. Paul Goldswain has submitted a few photos taken today. See Photographs Page

28th June 2003 The Draw for Henley has been published and shows the two Staines crews drawn against Nottinghamshire County in the Britannia Challenge Cup and Homberger, Germany in the Thames Challenge Cup. These first round races will take place on Wednesday but the times have not yet been published although they will be published here shortly.

28th June 2003 Captain, Duncan Speight emails ----- Could you let the rest of the committee know that the next committee meeting is to be held the second Tuesday on July (8th) as a number us will be unable to make it due to training and sleeping commitments! If there are any problems can the committee let me know so that we can arrange an alternative date. duncan.speight@gxs.com Also just to add to the qualifying for HRR... Thank you for all those that turned up to support the crews entered, the Remenham roar was nearly as big as it is during the regatta! Also respect to the eight who rowed like a bunch of demons possessed.... you have never seen a happier bunch of people when the results were broadcast! Thanks Duncan

27th June 2003 The qualifying rounds for Henley Royal Regatta took place today with two Staines fours entering the Britannia Challenge Cup and an eight entering the Thames Challenge Cup. Two crews successfully qualified but 'Staines B' in the Britannia Challenge Cup unfortunately failed to do so. The successful crews go on to race in the first round this coming Wednesday. The draw will be published here shortly.

25th June 2003 Mike Piper confirmed last evening that the Staines veteran squad will be entering a Vet C four into Henley Veterans Regatta on the 11-12th July 2003. Staines won this event last year with a different crew and it would be brilliant to take it for a second year.

24th June 2003 Steve Tassell emails regarding the Staines lightweight four at Henley Women's Regatta last Saturday ----- I can confirm that the lightweight women’s coxless four were disqualified in their first race, it had barely started before the umpire decided to stop proceedings, no mention of a re-row despite only narrowly clashing with Bath. We have three weeks now until the National Championships, this year being held in Strathclyde, where hopefully we will improve on our fortunes at Henley.

23rd June 2003 News just in from Treasurer, John Walton ----- Staines orders two new racing fours thanks to Blaze Construction and SportsMatch..... I'll leave the journalism to others, but I've just ordered two new fours: - A coxed four in the Sims Empacher style - A coxless four in the Sims VEB style, same as 'Graham Carey', but with wing riggers (shock horror!) Both boats are 85+ Kg and both will come complete with cox-box or rate meter. Delivery expected late July. It's proposed to call the boats 'Eugene Broderick' and 'Trisha Corless'. Best regards John Walton

23rd June 2003 Trish Corless has submitted the following via the Captain ----- The winning RAF eight in the Thames Challenge Cup at Henley in 1953 are going to row the course at HRR on Saturday before or after tea break . Two of the crew in 1953 were members of Staines BC : Ken Cross and John (Jim) Green and they will be rowing in the crew at HRR.

22nd June 2003 Fresh from his trip to visit the SAS in Denmark, Murray Litvak has added a couple of items to Tales from the River Bank.

22nd June 2003 Duncan Speight emails ----- To all members, for your information I will be bringing down a load of Staines Regatta posters for distribution at other regattas we attend. These will include: Egham, Bedford, Molesey, Henley and Twickenham. For those of you racing it would be greatly appreciated if you could put these on car windscreens.. trailers, vans you name it I am sure a poster can be stuck on it! I will need a volunteer to oversee this job on a regatta by regatta basis... if you can pull a gang of people together it'll only take a few minutes to distribute, so come on lend a hand. You will probably be asked to help on the day of the regatta too so be prepared to lend a hand on the day. Thanks for your help, Duncan.

22nd June 2003 The official results for Marlow Regatta which took place yesterday have now been published. Two Staines crews entered in preparation for Henley Royal Regatta in a few days time. Both crews unfortunately lost in the first round, the Senior 2 eight coming 4th of 7 in their heat in a time of 6:30.80 and the Senior 1 coxed four also coming 4th out of 5 in their heat in a time of 7:08.50.

21st June 2003 Henley Women's Regatta started today with the Staines lightweight coxless four competing against Bath University. Full details are not known but the official results show the Staines crew being disqualified and no time taken.

WJ12 1x - Morrison and Goldswain. Sir William Perkins's School entries include 1 crew in the WJ13 4x+ and two crews in WJ13 2x.

20th June 2003 An eight ran aground last evening on the bend at Silvery Sands and was stuck fast for several minutes. The coxswain, Mr Roy Dauncey, blamed the strong cross wind for the incident and commented that it had nothing to do with his steering. Older members who have known Mr Dauncey for some time will probably make their own conclusions!

19th June 2003 The list of entries has now been released for Henley Royal Regatta. Staines has 3 crews entered, an eight in the Thames Challenge Cup and 2 fours in the Britannia Challenge Cup.

19th June 2003 Laura Cowie emails ----- This is a request on behalf of my new work colleague, Rachael Rooney, who has just moved to the area, and is seeking accommodation in the Staines area. Does anyone have a room to rent at the moment?? Rachael is a recent graduate and has started work within our planning department, currently staying with friends in Slough, which is quite a trek to the offices in Addlestone... Let me know if anyone can help - thanks! Laura Cowie Ex-Staines BC member (1998/99) Tel: 01932 425275 (work); 01483 755649 (home)

19th June 2003 If anyone with a digital camera is attending Egham Regatta on Sunday 29th June, could they let me know please. We need some photos of the two crews that are racing from Sir William Perkins's School for the web site. This is the first ever competitive rowing event for the school which is now training 'under the wing' of Staines Boat Club.

18th June 2003 Hayley Vrublevskis pleads ----- If anyone has got any old towels lurking at the back on their linen cupboards which have seen better days then please bring them down to the club to be used for boat wiping. Thanks Hayley.

18th June 2003 Michelle O'Riordan, now in Cambodia, has just emailed a couple of larger photos to go with her recent report. See Michelle's Travels.

17th June 2003 John Walton emails regarding this years World Masters Regatta in Vichy, France ----- Here is a bulletin I've produced about this year's event. Please think about coming along and joining in the fun at this year's bash. Please contact me if you need any more information, but note that you can get more details online at http://www.mastersvichy2003.com. Deadline for entries (to me) is July 20th. Two requests:- 1. Please don't put your own entries in or register the club online. Only one entry per club is allowed, and at the moment I'm proposing that I deal with all this nearer the time. 2. If you are definitely coming, please let me know ASAP, so I can get an initial idea of numbers, and if it's enough, get cracking with travel bookings. I haven't tried to send this to everyone, just the more mature members whose email addresses are in my contacts, so please forward this message to key members of other crews and the young'uns, and remember: 27 this year or older = Veteran. Application Form here --- Entry Form here

16th June 2003 Steve Tassell reports that the Staines lightweight girls won their event yesterday at Reading Amateur Regatta. Steve says --- "The girls won with a commanding verdict over Exeter University ‘B’ in Elite Coxless Fours. When we turned up to race the ‘A’ crew in the final we discovered they had scratched, obviously found the heat a bit too much." Full results will be available on the Reading web site here. The girls will go on to compete against Bath University in Women's Henley Regatta. For those wishing to support the race it will take place at 4.34 pm on Saturday 21st June 2003.

14th June 2003 Liz Barnard of Sir William Perkins's School confirms today that 2 crews have been entered into Egham Regatta which takes place on the 29th June 2003. This is the first competitive event for the girls and follows the introduction of rowing at the school in conjunction with the facilities of Staines Boat Club.

13th June 2003 Social Secretary, Steve Smith advises ----- Ladies and Gentlemen! With such a rigorous training regime at the current time, any social experiences seem to be too few and far between! However, all will be well soon, and the ENTIRE CLUB is invited for a picnic on the lawn along the Henley course on the day of the Mens Finals Sun 6th July. We'll try to get a great vantage spot in order to see the events, but more importantly, do indulge in a well earned break after the big events of the year, and just let our hair down in general. Picnic will start around lunch time, so come one, come all ready for copius amounts of fun and feasting!

12th June 2003 Steve Tassell writes regarding the chance to see our lightweight girls in action! ----- The lwt coxless four will be at Reading Amateur on Sunday racing in Elite coxless fours against Exeter University, the race is at 15:09 so, if you are in the area, your support will be welcome! We then move onto Henley and will be training there for the next week in preparation for Women’s Henley next weekend.

12th June 2003 An email from Zoe asking, I think, for a Remenham Club member to take her to Henley as a guest. ------ Hi its Zoe Mitchell. I don't suppose you could put an email on web to see if anyone has got any spare tickets for Remenham on Saturday will pay cash please, please, please been on hols and forgot totally and would really love to go. Cheers Zoe. mobile no. 07793 805567

11th June 2003 Alex Fitzgerad emails with good news about Henley Royal Regatta ---- We are entering an eight into the Thames Cup, and two coxed fours into the Britannia cup. The crews are: 8o: Robin Dunlop, Adam Gill, Steve Conner, Steve Smith, Mark Rolt, Max Somper, Terry Moore, Tom Goldswain. Cox: Caroline Bowman --- 4+: Duncan Speight, Steve Balentine, Jon Woodersfield, Alex FitzGerald. Cox Caroline Bowman --- 4+: Luc Wilson, Helge Neumeister, Dave Green, Fikret Ozer. Cox: Jodi Davis. It is fantastic to be able to put forward so many names and crews, when considering the entries in recent years have been limited to one crew. Alex

10th June 2003 Steve Tassell reports ----- The Annual Women's Rowing Lecture at the UK River and Rowing Museum in Henley will take place on Wednesday 18th June this year (2 days before the start of Henley Women's Regatta). This year's speaker is 2002 LW2- champion Naomi Ashcroft, and her subject is "Inspiration, Motivation, Win". For booking details call 01491 415605, look at the PDF poster or see the museum's website (link above).

9th June 2003 Captain, Duncan Speight reports ---- SBC at Docklands Regatta. For those of you familiar with Docklands regatta the weather didn't disappoint! On Saturday there was a cross head wind which mean that those crews on the airport side had a distinct advantage, Sunday was much of the same but the wind was stronger which meant that the regatta was cancelled late in the afternoon. We still managed some excellent results with the MS3 4+ winning bronze on Saturday, the same crew of Luc, Helge, Dave and Fikret winning the gold on Sunday. A brilliant performance and one which should fill them with a lot of confidence going into the Henley qualifiers. The Women's coxless four were entered in Elite and as such were up against two crews stacked with ex Olympians so were up against it. They put in a spirited performance but the Saturday did not provide any medals. The Sunday was a different story, winning a Gold in WS1 4- which considering the conditions and the size of them all now (they're the one's that when they turn sideways you can't see any more!) was a great effort. Other crews that entered where MS2 8+ they had a couple of tough races and were pleased with their result on Sunday, coming fifth out of seven in their heat. These guys are growing on confidence and I am sure will do well at Henley. The final crew was a MS1 4-, they got through to the final but were not able to take a medal, coming fifth. The reaction was positive as in both races the rate didn't go much over 31-33 respectively (looks a bit like the crews average age?!?). The same crew was entered for S1 4+ on the Sunday but on getting to the start the regatta was cancelled due to the conditions. I think at the back of the regatta committees mind the regatta was about to be cancelled as when we got to the landing stage they were giving out cups as a means to bail out!! Full results here. Next regatta is Reading where the Women will be racing both days. The men have decided to stay at Staines to put in some extra training so our next race will be Marlow in two weeks time. Well done to the girls for their win at Walton. Excellent performance!

8th June 2003 Paul Goldswain advises that his daughter Sarah has been selected to row at Women's Henley in the Bath University lightweight coxless four. By sheer coincidence her crew has been drawn against the Staines girls competing in the same event. For those wishing to support the race it will take place at 4.34 pm on Saturday 21st June 2003. We wonder who the Goldswain family will shout for! The draw can be found on the HWR web site.

7th June 2003 There is a rumour of a bronze medal today at the Docklands Regatta. Details will follow as soon as one of the competitors has reported in. Full results will be posted here shortly after the weekend.

7th June 2003 News has just arrived in from todays racing at Walton Regatta. Roger Pailes reports that the WS4+ of Chrissie Speight, Leanne Johns, Alison Rolt, Gayle Donnelly and coxswain Roger Pailes beat Kingston BC easily in the final after the bow girl of the Kingston four caught a massive crab half way down the course. This is the first qualifying pot for Gayle and Alison (see photo). Let's hope for many more. Clare Wood advises that the Vet C mens four had a good race but could not regain the 6 second handicap they were given and lost to the Reading RC Vet D crew by 4 lengths. Full results here

6th June 2003 Another reminder for those of you who have not checked out the Rowing Newsgroup on Google Groups. You can contribute to the discussions and start your own thread if you wish. You can also fink the link to it on our Links Page.

6th June 2003 For spectators travelling to Walton Regatta tomorrow, Staines has 2 crews entered. They are a WS4+ (1st race 10.36 am, 2nd race 2.06 pm) and a Vet C4+ in a straight final at 6.08 pm. Full draw here

3rd June 2003 REGATTA NEWS - A few reports just in -- Alex Fitzgerald writes --- We have a few crews entering Docklands this weekend - Mens S1 4- (+ on Sun), S2 8 & S3 4+, and Womens S1 4- (racing elite on Sat) The Docks web site has the draw etc - and we are really(?) looking forward to it. -- Sarah Fudge emails ----- There's loads about to happen!!! The S4 girls went to Twickenham last weekend and the coxless girls are entering Docks, Reading and hopefully Henley (if they have accepted us) and we're going to try our hardest to win a medal at the Nationals. Oh by the way we already have a gold medal guaranteed for Docks (will explain after the event!!) -- Steve Tassell adds -----"Fudge identified in Cake smear!" - Sarah Fudge won't mind me for revealing her strategy for making lightweight this year...she's taken to holding a satanic ritual every evening where she pushes herself to the darkest point of hell the very pit of humanity but as yet has not succumb to the digestive biscuit! There has also been some mention of running around the house naked in order to try and find ones inner self...she's on medication to help with the bouts of mental depression and fantasies about cake...allegedly.
30th May 2003 Egham Regatta, which will take place on the 29th June 2003, has published full details of the event on their website.

28th May 2003 For those of you at the club this evening, you may have witnessed a once in a lifetime happening. John Lusty, who has rowed for Staines for nearly 30 years, went out in a pair for the first time ever! Despite his feelings of trepidation the boat soon stabilised as you would expect. John's steering was something else however, often visiting the bushes and trees on the bank. We hope he doesn't drive his car in the same manner!!!!

28th May 2003 The swans nesting on the club lawn appear to have abandoned their nest leaving four of the eight eggs unhatched. Duncan Speight reports ---- On Monday morning the cygnets were swimming around the landing stage while the parents were on the bank trying desperately to get to them. We only saw two cygnets in the water and did wonder what had happened to the others. We managed to get the swans down to the water to join the cygnets but have not seen them since. Steve Tassell adds ---- I saw them at the weekend. It looks like three of the chicks have hatched and the mum and dad have been swimming around with them.

27th May 2003 Veteran D Staines oarsman Adrian Tollett has now released details of his 23 mile row in aid of the Mayor of Runnymede's Charities on 28th June 2003. He will row from New Haw Lock to the Bells of Ouzeley and will raise money for the childrens charities The Shooting Star Trust and Home-Start UK. Adrian would be very grateful if you would sponsor him for this solo adventure. You can see full details here and download the sponsorship form here. Alternatively, have a word with Adrian when you next see him at the club.

27th May 2003 Michelle O'Riordan from her world tour, emails today with her second news bulletin. See Michelle's Travels. (2 photos now added)

25th May 2003 Several Staines crews competed at the Metropolitan Regatta yesterday at Dorney Lake, Eton. Unfortunately there were no wins despite some close and exciting racing, notably the Men's Senior 2 Eights where Staines second to Caius BC by 0.72 second in the first round. Steve Tassell reports ----- The Met was promising on several counts, firstly the Men's Senior II 8 made it into the final after some very close racing and a gutsy row from everyone. Unfortunately fatigue from having doubled up in fours meant perhaps we didn't perform as well as one might have liked when it came to the final. On the Women's side we had two fours firstly our Novice/SIV girls were racing at Senior III as there was no SIV category. They surprised themselves with a solid row taking their first SIII scalp! This despite getting an official warning on the start and being put under undue pressure from the umpires. The SI coxless four was in a straight final with Oxford Uni and Imperial leading a strong field. Unfortuantely freak weather conditions right around race time meant we had some pretty substantial waves to contend with! Almost losing our bow rower some 250m in we managed to recover to get back on terms, sadly though it meant we were out of contention for the top places. Some consolation came from a tight race to the line with Bath Uni (featuring Sarah Goldswain at stroke). Thanks should go to all coaching staff and coxes for getting crews race ready and up to the start on time.

22nd May 2003 Peter Smith advises ------ We have been granted an exemption certificate under the Thames Conservancy Act for the coaching launch 'Pushy Cat'. This means that we are allowed to travel in it at a speed not exceeding 24 knots while coaching crews. Peter emphasises that, under this exemption, a maximum of 2 people are allowed on board and coaching must actually be in progress, i.e. not racing to find a crew that has already boated.

21st May 2003 Claire Merrett emails with an offer of accommodation ------ Lodger Required!! Available start July. Double Room in Modern fully furnished house - plus off road parking, garden, Sky TV, Warfield, near Bracknell - 20 mins Staines/35 mins Heathrow/45 mins (train) Waterloo/15 mins (train) Reading Non-smoker - Preferably female £300 mth, inc bills (except phone)

21st May 2003 Our secretary Murray Litvak writes ------ THE BLACK ART OF RIGGING TO MAKE YOUR BOAT GO FASTER- AND ITS FREE!!!!! Members may have noticed others members at the club waving pitch gauges and tape measures around over last weekend on the Coaching Course. For those of you both general members and those on the course, the ARA are happy to organise a course at Staines for a couple of hours to train you in this "black art" so that you can look Pete and Bob in the eye and know what they are talking about rather than remaining completely blank. The course will be free and all you need to do is bring the tools and yourself. It will include watching boats going by and spotting what can be done with the rigging to make it go faster as well as hands on tweaking!!! For those interested please send an email to traineerigger@otterproperty.co.uk a mutually convenient date will then be agreed with the ARA. Places are limited to around a dozen, so first come, first served.

20th May 2003 Michelle O'Riordan writes ------ Hello everyone! So...we are finally in Bangkok - I couldn't quite believe it...as the plane started to descend into Thailand it felt like we were entering a whole new world! - There were lovely gardens all round the runway and bizarrely a golf course...I am sure a few stray balls must get onto the runway! Getting a taxi was interesting...we had to battle our way through various people offering us great (not) deals - shared one in the end with a german lad travelling on his own (very brave I thought!) The hotel we are staying in is SO posh! - the pool is on the 6th floor - might have to cool off in there later its around 98F at the moment. Right, best sign off - we are off to Koh San Road tomorrow, the mecca for all backpackers and not so posh hostels! Hope everyone is well and to all those who came to my party...thank you for making it such a special day...I had a fantastic time and it was great to share it with you all. Big hug Michelle ----------------- PLEASE NOTE -- To keep everyone up to date with Michelle's adventures there is a new link on the list on the left on the Latest News Page so you can keep a check on how she is doing. See Michelle's Travels.

20th May 2003 Jenny Edmunds emails ------ There is a guy at my work who is looking to buy a second hand ergo, can anyone help??? don't think it needs to be in tip top condition he's looking to spend about £250 £300. Cheers Jenny

20th May 2003 Duncan Speight emails ----- For those of you at Tim Akroyds leaving do I have some bad news... it's likely that you owe me money for the Devises to Westminster race!! Now here's the problem, the sponsor form has gone missing from the BC... the sweep stake is still there but not the actual forms. So I leave it to you to decide what you are willing to pledge... being that I haven't got the form any more I can't gell if you are being extra generous or have taken the opportunity to save a bit of cash! As you know its going to a good cause (MacMillan Nurses) and for those of you that don't know, Barclays have matched it so we should have approx £1600 to give to charity all being well. Thanks for your help and support see you soon. Duncan

19th May 2003 Michelle O'Riordan left to go to Thailand today on the first part of her year long holiday that will take her to to several countries including Australia. Michelle has promised to let us know how she is getting on so keep an eye open on this web site for her first report and possibly a photograph.

18th May 2003 The ARA Instructors Award Coaching Course taking place at Staines finished today with all participants completing their assessments successfully. They are Murray Litvak, Clare Wood, Don Moore, Duncan Speight, Graham Carey, Jodi Davis, Steve Tassell, Liz Bernard (Sir William Perkins School) and Mark Haines (Putney Town). The training and assessments were undertaken by Helen Foord, John Truswell and Nigel Weare and Staines Boat Club would like to extend our thanks to them for their help. See the Photographs Page.

16th May 2003 Leanne Johns reminds us ----- Just a quick reminder that it is Michelle's leaving party on Saturday night at the boat club. Do try and be there.

16th May 2003 Those of you at the club last night will have noticed that another section of the Instructors Award Coaching Course was taking place, this time under the control of Nigel Weare. Nigel is an honorary member of Staines Boat Club and has also worked for the last 15 years for the ARA. He is the ARA Coaching and Development Officer for the South Region (Thames Upriver) so when you next have a question about rowing or coaching that you cannot answer, he is the man to ask. I have added a photo of him (with pen and chart) towards the bottom of the IA Coaching Course photos that can be found on the Photographs Page

15th May 2003 Alex Fitzgerald emails ----- Dear SOBS and friends of SOBS Since the departure of the intrepid Mr Akroyd, people will have noticed a decrease in the number of invites going out for the SOBS dinners - could there be a correlation between tummy size & invites, you can form your own thoughts on that ...... So for those in need of a party on the Bank Holiday weekend, we offer a fancy dress BBQ dressed as vicars 'n tarts! Sunday 25th May so you have all Monday to recover. Just the thought of Gideon in suspenders should be all the encouragement you need to pay a visit.........(hm?) £10 on the door, starting from 5.30 and food should be available from about 6.30. Prizes on offer for the best two outfits and for winning some "summer" games! Members of the "committee" have suggested that a visit to the local nightclub(s?) could also be in order to parade your wares about town a bit later. If people can pass the message on to those who may be interested and also let me know if they will be coming so I have an idea of how much food to get in, I will be grateful - look forward to seeing you there. Alex

14th May 2003 Murray Litvak emails ----- Members cooperation will again be needed on Thursday night as the Coaching Course will be using the Clubhouse from 7pm. Please try to gain access to the building via the boathouse/ rear door. Thanks.

13th May 2003 Steve Ballantine has just submitted some photographs taken at Evesham Regatta on the 4th - 5th May 2003. See Photographs Page

12th May 2003 Murray Litvak writes regarding the Instructors Course ------ A thank you to all members for co-operating over the weekend by not using the main clubhouse. You will pleased to know that the weekend went well and there are some photographs on the relevant pages showing the "fun". Next weekend the same will apply, the course will be using the Clubhouse on Saturday from 9am, and then the river in the afternoon. Please do not use the main entrance, please gain access via rear door or boat house doors. Finally, no aimless wandering in after training and trying to flop down on those comfy chairs- because you won't be able to. Remember these members on the course are doing it for YOUR benefit, not theirs!!!!!

7th May 2003 Following comments made by Chairman of Evesham Regatta & Junior coach Norman Regwell, Peter Smith responds ---- As you know all Staines members that went to Evesham had a good time, that includes Ted Dyos although he didn't get a pot this year for being an old member! On Saturday night we went back to the club for a drink or two at about 10AM, and as the downstairs bar was closed, Ted said there was a PUB near our guest house, lets try that. Getting close to it there was a loud noise, that some call 'music' We went into the bar which didn't have music but could hear a lady singing Summer Time next door. I asked the bar maid if it was Karaoke! NO SHE SAID, it's a drag queen! Well Ted was, every 5-10 mins, back and forth loving every minute, I stayed in the bar talking to an old local gentleman, the next thing I saw was the two guys that own the pub snogging behind the bar, 'uck', so I didn't move from my seat and when Ted came back I told him about the snogging and said lets get out of here. Ted said as we were leaving that he liked the pub and wanted to go back. I said not with me! 'Quote of the weekend' Walking along the road by the river by the church, Ted said to me, 'I like this place' I looked over and said 'WHAT THE GRAVE YARD' I think he meant Evesham?

Also, to everyone that was kind enough to sponsor Henry and I for the Devises to Westminster, you'll be please to know we finished the 126 miles in in 30hrs 15mins and we're still suffering! As most of you know I pretty much live at the boat club so if you sponsored us it's time to cough up :-). With the help of Barclays Bank it looks like we have been able to raise approx £1500 for MacMillan Nurses so thank you all very much for your support. For those of you that haven't sponsored us and would like to make a donation there is still time!

2nd May 2003 Alex Fitzgerald emails ----- Please could I ask you to put a request on the web site for all people to search their car boots and their consciences! for any boat ties they have got. We have just had to buy 8 more and as they cost £5+ each, it is not cheap. It seems to be a problem every time 4 or more boats are loaded on the trailer. People who keep them "in reserve" as they never have them are depriving the rest of the club when they need them. Like the recent gun amnesty, can we have a boat tie amnesty and get them returned. Thanks Alex

27th April 2003 Adrian Tollett writes regarding his sponsored row in aid of the Mayor of Runnymede's charities. ------- I thought I would leave my boat at the Club for a couple of days as it is a bit windy today. This makes portage difficult, especially when crossing busy roads. I have a few days left on the visitor's licence. If anyone would like a demo, I will see if I can oblige. A few statistics for your interest : Total elapsed time from New Haw Lock (boated, below lock) to The Bells of Ousley and back to SBC landing stage was 6:09, comprising 2:55 sculling, 1:04 portage, 1:35 locks and 0:35 other breaks. Average sculling speed upstream was about 5 m.p.h. I should be able to maintain a faster speed downstream, especially if I can avoid all the overhanging trees. Bob Slade took some shots of me in the boat this morning. When I have completed this trial trip, decided on the timings for the sponsored row on 28th June, got the details of the Mayor of Runnymede's charities, etc., I will try and publish the sponsorship forms before the Mayor-making on 15th May. The day after my sponsored row, 29th June, is Egham Regatta, when the Mayor will be presenting the pots. I will be present, in Staines blazer, to accompany the Mayor's party during the late afternoon/early evening period. - Adrian

Unfortunately the weather wasn't up too much so the girls decided against surfing and hit the shops! The boys surfed (Battle of the testosterone Part I) and then joined us for a walk around the local towns and climbed the sand dunes (Battle of the testosterone Part II). I consider myself fortunate to have spent such a fantastic weekend together. Please see me or Claire to see our photos.

15th April 2003 Leanne Johns pleads for ergos, sorry egos!---- I have had another call from Matthew Clifton at Prospect Pictures. For those of you who missed the banter at the weekend he wants to come down to the club next Tuesday film the men's squad rowing and then ask a few questions about dating, women etc. They will also have some video phones on them and they will record pictures of you. They will then film various women taking part, show them the pictures see if anyone matches up and if you're chosen you get to go on an all expenses paid date in town on Friday 26th April. Special thanks to Alex who forced me to do the ''yard of ale'' for old times sake (I guess he is still trying to get his own back following the best man speech at his wedding...!!) and to Dunk for presenting me with the weight reducing pants (more useful as time goes on...) and a very good T Shirt...also to Steve B who supplied the Absinth and who I hold solely responsible for my passing out later on. If you didn't make it to the club, it has been great fun rowing with you, or trying to coach you to row, over the last seven years that I have been with the club. I am sure I will miss not racing this Summer, especially with the run up to and including Henley. I will certainly do my utmost to be there on the bank...I'll try and bring Steph with me also!! Good luck to you all for a very successful season...(and I hope you manage to keep the SOBS dinner events going- there needs to be a new SOBS Master! Anyone?) Cheers to you all. Tim.

The jackets will be £79.50 (the increase in price is due to lower numbers expected, this will go down a few £'s if more people order) cheques made payable to Staines Boat Club. There will be another kit order for summer wear in the next couple of weeks, so watch this space'

17th March 2003 Leanne Johns appeals ------ "You should all now have received entry/sponsorship forms for the sponsored row. If you have not they can be downloaded from this site --- entry forms (download here) and sponsorship forms (download here). As I am sure you will appreciate time is of the essence so please get your entry forms in and start collecting sponsorship today!"

17th March 2003 Murray Litvak emails, regarding the Womens Head of the River Race last Saturday ---- THANKS FOR THE RIDE- A short note to say thanks for the T shirt as a souvenir of the event on Saturday, it was much appreciated and not necessary. I had a thoroughly enjoyable time, and think you had a very good row. Hopefully, that will set you up for the start of the Summer season. I of course, attribute a substantial rise in placings entirely due to the yellow mask which scared the other crews!!! - Murray (see TFTRB)

15th March 2003 The Women's Eights Head of the River Race took place today in glorious spring sunshine from Mortlake to Putney. With a record entry of 270 crews the Staines Senior 3 eight started 218th and finished 141st in a time of 23 mins 45.62 secs. They came 64th of 118 crews in their division. Full results are available here. Sarah Goldswain, currently studying at Bath University, rowed in their first eight which came 117th in a time of 23 mins 27.28 secs.

11th March 2003 Leanne Johns advises ------ The Staines Boat Club sponsored row will take place on Saturday 12th April. This is approx. 34miles from Henley Rowing Club to Staines Boat Club. The target is to raise £5000 with 20% (£1000) being donated to charity. This has yet to be finalized but likely to be a local children's charity. There is a £5 entry fee which will cover towing fees, refreshments and lunch and a £50 per person minimum sponsorship amount is required due to the limited places available. Experienced scullers and doubles can be used as well as fours and eights so juniors are welcome to join in. Sponsorship forms must be handed to be stamped before the event so that we can record the funds being raised. We will also need a support crew to assist with manning the locks, coxing, replacing anyone who is injured. As you will appreciate time is of the essence so please return your entry forms asap. If you are not able to take part in the event but would like to make a donation to help raise the target please contact Leanne Johns. Please encourage friends and family to come along and support. Hot food and drinks will be available at the club from 4pm. Entry forms (download here) and sponsorship forms (download here) will be posted out to all members but are also available at the club. Cheers Leanne

11th March 2003 Duncan Speight emails ---- The yellow boards are up at Bell Weir and Penton Hook locks but there is forecast for more rain. If you plan to go out during the week could you check the boards with Penton Hook before boating. Their telephone number is +44 (01784) 452657

11th March 2003 The Thames Rowing Council describes itself as an organisation that has a significant role to play in rowing today, linking together the Divisional Representatives and the A. R. A. It now has its own website

11th March 2003 Rachel Quarrel's web site is reporting that the Reading Head has been cancelled ------- The Reading Univ. BC President announces that unfortunately he has been forced into fully cancelling the Reading Uni HORR (UK), since the proposed rescheduled date is in the university holidays and there would not be enough students around to run the event.

11th March 2003 Staines Boat Club is entering a Senior 3 eight in the Women's Eights Head of the River Race which takes place on Saturday 15th March 2003 at 2.00pm. There is a record entry of 270 crews this year. Spectators are welcome and should note that the race is from Mortlake to Putney and Staines start number is 218. See start order.

9th March 2003 A new Sims mens coxed four was named Graham Carey today. The sun shone for the event and the assembled dignatories enjoyed a wine tasting afterwards. See Photographs Page.

7th March 2003 Duncan Speight emails ---- THE RED BOARDS ARE UP AT STAINES so we are boating from Thames RC on Putney embankment. The vans booked for the weekend so the towing is sorted. Everyone knows about the plans (see below). If the vets are going to row at the tideway, the plan will be for preferably them to load up but if it speeds things up and avoids two trailers going to different places, we will put the boats on for them. Holloway also know and will let me know if they want to come with us asap, if they are not coming we will take their boat off the trailer in the morning.

7th March 2003 Mens coordinator, Alex Fitzgerald advises ----- THE READING HEAD HAS BEEN CANCELLED due to high river, strong flow and expected rainfall and rescheduled for Sunday 23rd March 2003 (see web site). Unfortunately the boards at Staines are on red also. The plan is to meet at 7.45am tomorrow and load up any remaining boats on the trailer and take it somewhere, probably Putney, Duncan will know tomorrow morning once he has contacted relevant people. We will be leaving at 8.15am when the van arrives, so please load up efficiently and if it will take longer, arrive earlier!!!! If people can let the rest of their squads know, that would be useful. Alex

7th March 2003 Duncan Speight appeals ---- CALLING ALL CREWS! - Do you have a COX BOX in your possession? If so Please bring them back ASAP. We are currently missing 2 which are valued at £600 each, without them we are unable to provide enough to all the crews going out over the weekend. At this kind of price we can't afford to be buying new ones on a whim!

6th March 2003 The draw for Reading Head that takes place this Saturday 8th March at 11 am, has now been published. Three Staines crews are competing namely two womens S3 coxed eights and a mens S2 coxed eight. View draw here.

6th March 2003 Our Captain, Duncan Speight, has responded to the rumour that he is to compete in the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race. Here is his report ----- yep there is a silly plan to do the Devizes to Westminster, I blame it all on Mr Tassell who asked me to help him and his K2 partner out... when I found out it was just driving the car and feeding them I was turned off the idea so thought that it would be a good idea to do it myself. I asked Tim Akroyd if he would do it... he agreed and then was so scared after going to the seminar explaining it that he decided to leave the country... fortunately (if you could class it as that!) one of the guys I work with is an avid Kayak paddler and has always wanted to do it so I have a replacement partner... it now seems like Steve Tassell and his mate are going to do the leisurely four day event leaving me with the short straw! We have done a fair bit of paddling now, fallen in on the Lammas Island.... met some rather 'friendly' men at the bottom of their garden whilst trying to boat. You can imagine the look on their faces as two blokes are standing there in rubber?!?!? They even offered us the use of their washing machine! To add to that we had a bit of a close call at Sunbury lock last Sunday to the amusement of the locals.... as we hung on for grim death trying not to fall in whilst both wetting ourselves laughing as the water started to pour in! We are planning on doing a long paddle this weekend, depending on the rowing training this is likely to be from Marlow..ish to Staines. We then hope to do the sponsored row in the kayak to get a bit more practise. It seems that everyone with any experience either thinks we are stark raving mad or doesn't think we will finish it with so little training... we are both determined to prove otherwise! It would be great if we could get some support from the club for the event... the more encouragement on the day the better... I am sure we will need it by the time we get to Staines!! Henry and I will also be doing the event for charity, these being for MacMillan Cancer Research and Staines Boat Club, so expect some hassling for money in the not too distant future!

4th March 2003 Our President, Don Moore, has just released his report for 2003. View it here

2nd March 2003 Steve Ballantine has submitted some photos taken at Nottingham Head of the Trent on 23rd March 2003. See Photographs Page

2nd March 2003 Rumour has it that our Captain, Duncan Speight is not satisfied with the level of training at Staines so has decided to compete in the annual Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race which takes place over the Easter weekend 18 - 21st April 2003. We will report in more detail as soon as we hear officially from Duncan.

2nd March 2003 A team of willing volunteers worked hard over the weekend clearing, cleaning, painting and renovating the clubhouse and grounds. In response to a plea from the local residents association, the hedges were cut and undergrowth cleared along the border with Riverside Drive. With the exeption of one strangely irate lady, the residents seemed very pleased with the effort.

2nd March 2003 Burway Head took place yesterday with only 3 boats containing Staines members competing. Tom Goldswain and Rob Baker teamed up with Marlow for the 4x event & came 4th out of 5 in a time of 10 mins 35 secs. The Vet C 4+ women started the race but after turning realised something was wrong with their rudder. On checking, they discovered it had been sheared off whilst jostling for position before the race - which was shame as their only opposition were the same Weybridge crew they beat at Molesey two weeks before. The Staines/Walbrook Vet C 4- men came 3rd of 3 in a time of 11 mins 23 secs. Their time was not helped by a Broxbourne S34+ who steered into them as our crew overtook causing both boats to come to a complete halt. As a result, the Staines/Walbrook boat lost about 30 secs. Full results are available on the Burway web site.

26th February 2003 The Captain, Duncan Speight, appeals ------- For those of you that may have forgotten, this weekend is 'be nice to the boat club weekend' so we need all of your help to give the BC a bit of a spring clean and do some necessary maintenance. Jobs include; - decorating the changing rooms laying new carpet in both changing rooms, finish external racking, tidy up the car park and the landing stage area and cutting back the hedge on riverside drive. As you can see there is a lot to do so please spare a few hours. The boat club will appreciate it, as will you when you have somewhere nice to change, somewhere safe to put boats and to be safe in the knowledge that you can get to the landing stage without rolling flat on your face! So bring down your useful tools, some beer money and a sense of humour and we'll get it done in no time! Thanks for your help. Best Regards Duncan Speight.

25th February 2003 Peter Smith has belated news of new SBC offspring. Last Thursday (20th February), Terry and Debbie Sweeney celebrated the birth of their first child, a baby girl named Cora. She was born at a weight of 8 lbs 6oz. Staines Boat Club sends our congratulations to them all.

25th February 2003 The Molesey Veterans Head results have finally been published on the Molesey Boat Club web site. Leanne Johns comments --- I am delighted to report that the Vet B girls have won their pennant in the Vet B/Vet C handicapped fours!! (beating the Weybridge Vet C crew). The crew comprised of Carol Goldswain, Carol Cornell, Clare Wood, Hayley Vrublevskis and coxswain Terry Moore.

24th February 2003 Steve Ballantine writes ----- A quick reminder to all. I will completing the entries for Reading Head Thursday evening if you want to enter crews I will need all your details by then. (i.e. A cheque for the entry fee and a completed entry form)

24th February 2003 Eight crews from Staines took part in the Head of the Trent at Nottingham yesterday. Steve Tassell reports ------ The results were: 1st Division- MS48 4th out of 10 in a time of 12:10 (short course), 2nd Division- MS28 14th out of 18 in a time of 18:05 (long course), WS24+ 3rd of 3 in a time of 22:58 (long course), WS34+ 6th of 10 in a time of 23:03 (long course), 3rd Division- MS24+ 4th of 4 in a time of 20:05 (long course) WS38 15th of 17 in a time of 21:39 (long course), Both squads were pleased on the whole although we need to crank things up another gear with the Men’s and Women’s Head of the river race looming ever large! Caroline Bowman, cox of the MS48, advises ---- Great result and a good solid race by the S4 boys. Full results will be available (once published) on the Nottingham Boat Club website. Helge Neumeister advises that there are photos available from the various divisions from the Head of the Trent on www.naturesimages.co.uk and www.jetphotographic.com

24th February 2003 Molesey Veterans Head took place on Saturday with two Staines crews competing. Full results will be found (once published) on the Molesey Boat Club web site.

20th February 2003 Michelle O'Riordan emails ----- I wanted to let you know that I will be having a leaving party at the boat club on Saturday 17th May 2003 before I go on my travels for a year and that you are ALL invited! Venue: Staines Boat Club Time: 19:30 Music: There will be a DJ pumping out your favourite party tunes. 18th February 2003 Captain, Duncan Speight asks ---- Do we have any qualified first aiders at the boat club? Is there anyone reading this that is a first aider that would be willing to help club members pass their IA award? If you would like to know more about this please let me know, you can contact me at duncan.speight@gxs.com This really would help us immensely and could save the BC nearly £200 so your help would be greatly appreciated.

18th February 2003 Tim Akroyd responds ----- As I'm sure most of you know I am leaving Staines at the end of March to go to work in Copenhagen for a few years. I will be letting my house in Staines and I am in the throws of clearing it out now. I have managed to clear a lot of items though there remains a couple of items up for sale or up for grabs. For sale Marantz CD Deck and Marantz amplifier (special edition) with Acoustic Research speakers (AR18 for the techies) looking for £150 ono Up for grabs A few pot plants. My membership for Holmes Place in Staines (you would have to pay £40 to transfer the membership from my name to yours and the monthly subs is £51. However you wouldn't have to pay the full initial joining fee which I believe is around £150)....it has a great pool and big fluffy towels... If any of you are interested in the above please let me know- on email or call me on the mobile, 07771 913753. Cheers, Tim.

18th February 2003 Duncan Speight reports ---- As most of you will know Tim Akroyd has taken a new job with his existing company, this is a great promotion for him but not such great news for SBC and all is friends as this also means a move to Copenhagen. Tim has spoken to Don and I about this and would like to step down as Vice Captain next month and hand over to some one who will be a little closer to home. Doing a little digging I think I may have found some one suitable to take Tim's position... even more amazingly they even agreed to take the post if the committee were happy. I would like to propose Jo Hawkes as the new Vice Captain. I am sure most of you know Jo as she has been at Staines for a number of years and has played an important part in the development of the women's squad and as the joint driving force in re-decorating the boat club this year. If there are any other nominations for the positions I would suggest that we vote for the new Vice Captain at the next committee meeting,. If there are not other nominations and the committee are happy with the nomination I would like to invite Jo to the next committee meeting. On behalf of Staines Boat Club I would like to wish Tim all the best in Copenhagen and to expect regular visitors!

14th February 2003 Alex Fitzgerald emails ------ The boards are still red, so we will be boating from Putney Town. Stuart is leaving the BC at 8.00, so please can the senior men be there at 7.45 to tie on Nigel John and the blades. Put riggers in cars. Crews will be decided on the morning, but I want to get two outings in - so be prompt. For the other squads, please note that the trailer is leaving at 8.00 tomorrow morning, so if you want any boats trailered, put them on tonight, or so they are ready for 8.00 prompt. Don't be selfish and make everybody else late because of your inefficiency. (I don't want to be responsible for our captain having another tantrum in the car park!!!) Many thanks Alex

13th February 2003 The ergo challenge took place at the boat club tonight with three teams of six competing. Each team member rowed 500 metres twice giving a 6000 metre total distance. Combining seniors, women and veterans in one competition brought some very exciting racing. The results were - Team A - 20mins 41.1secs, Team B - 20mins 03.8secs and Team 3 - 20mins 03.2 secs. Duncan Speight would like to thank all those who took part and wants to encourage all the members who stayed away this time to make sure they compete next time. The evening finished with another fine bolognese with garlic bread from the lovely Cal.

12th February 2003 Paul Hopkins writes ---- Dear Ergo Challenger, I'm afraid that Auriol Kensington have again had difficulty in raising a team for tomorrow (Thursday). However, as most of us have it in our diaries, I was wondering if we could organise an internal challenge - the real purpose would be to treat it like a training session and see if you can beat your previous best time. I understand that Cal is again planning another culinary delight and I am assured that the bar will be open afterwards!!!!! As before the format will be meet at the Club around 7.00pm with 2k ergo pieces from 7.30pm. I hope that you all will be able to make it. Best regards, Paul Hopkins

12th February 2003 Steve Ballantine advises ------ We are in luck as Stuart has agreed to tow this weekend. The plan will be to return the boats to Staines on Sunday as the following weekend we will be competing at Nottingham Trent & Molesey Vets - Anybody wanting me put entries in for N'Trent please note that I am planning to do these tonight and will need details and cheques. Please ask your squads to bring their cheque books.

12th February 2003 Michelle O'Riordan emails ----- Hi everyone - I am looking to rent my flat out while I am away on my travels...I think most of you know by now but for those who don't, I have decided to spread my wings and go travelling to South-East Asia, Australia and N.Zealand for a year. So....I just wanted to put the word out that if there is anyone you know who might be interested in renting a two-bedroom first floor flat in Staines for a year from mid-May onwards, then please get in touch via email at michelle.oriordan@eta.co.uk The flat is about a 5-min walk from the station and it is situated in Knowle Green. The rent will be £700+ bills.

12th February 2003 We are delighted to report that our very own Sarah Goldswain has been selected to row in the University of Bath first eight for the Woman's Eights Head of the River Race which takes place on the 15th March 2003.

12th February 2003 Duncan Speight reports ----- I have just spoken to the lock keeper at Penton Hook, unfortunately the red boards are back up and will be for at least a few days. Depending on the amount of rain in the catchment area today and tomorrow will depend on whether they will still be up at the weekend. From his tone I would not be suprised if the river is unrowable this weekend.

11th February 2003 Alex Fitzgerald writes ----- Dear All, You all have had the experience of knowing Tim Akroyd. As you may or may not know we will be waving him off to Copenhagen at the end of March for three years. To this end I propose a celebration - after all these years we have finally got rid of him! On 15th March we will combine his favourite pastimes of rowing, food, women and beer. Starting at 2.00pm on Hammersmith bridge we will be cheering on the ladies of Staines in their annual women's head of the river race. Following a discussion in the Rutland Arms or Blue Anchor on how well they have done (the answer will obviously be very well!!) we will trundle back to Staines where the bar will be open at the boat club. (e.t.a. 6 ish A few more ales to give those who have raced, time to recover and catch up then go for some food. The nature of food to be agreed but in all likeliness, it will be a(nother!) curry in true Akroyd style. Afterwards who knows? a visit to some dodgy establishment in the local vicinity. Hope to see you there Alex

10th February 2003 THE GREAT STAINES BOAT CLUB CLEAN UP A request from Duncan Speight --------- We have recently received a letter from the Riverside Drive residents stating their plans to get a work party together to tidy the road, cut back tree's etc. As part of this general tidy up they have asked if we could smarten up the hedges and bushes at the front of the BC. This seems to have come at a good time as there are also few things that we need sorting out at the boat club at the moment, these include, - Redecorating the changing rooms, - Laying new carpets (kindly donated by Alex & Jo Fitzgerald) - Finishing off the external boat racks - Generally making sure that all is in a good condition for the annual dinner dance, which, for those of you that may not know is to be held on the 26th April in a Marquee at the boat club. Looking at the rowing calendar, I would suggest the first weekend in March (1st-2nd March) would be a good time for this to be done as those that are rowing are racing at Burway so they can come back after racing to a paint brush or spanner depending on preference! If we could aim to start around 12-12.30 hopefully we should be able to get everything done with all your help. I am sure that Terry would be happy to open the bar and if the weather permits maybe we could have a BBQ to! To make this a success we need all of your help so please spare the BC an afternoon to bring it back to a decent condition and provide the boats with a safe resting place for the season. if you could let me know if you are free by e-mailing me to the following address it would be appreciated duncan.speight@gxs.com. One last thing, if you have any paint brushes, hedge trimmers, shears, saws, tacks, hammers or any other tools that you think would help it would be greatly appreciated. Please book this weekend in your diaries now.

10th February 2003 Captain, Duncan Speight emails ----- Hi All, The current plans for the coming weekend are to stay at Staines if the river is rowable. If the red board appear again during the week I would suggest taking the trailer to Putney Town. The weather forecast doesn't look too bad so fingers crossed we will be able to get out at Staines again. Tuesday -Rain in eastern England is likely to persist throughout the day. Elsewhere largely dry with sunny intervals and light winds, however, showers will affect the northwest and Northern Ireland. Wednesday - England and Wales mostly cloudy, patchy rain dying away as it edges west across southern parts. Elsewhere mainly dry with some sunny intervals after localised patchy fog and frost. In south turning colder from the east. Could all crews confirm to me whether or not you will be joining the club at the tideway if the river is in flood as soon as possible. Thanks for your help. Best Regards Duncan Speight

10th February 2003 Regatta Secretary, Steve Ballantine writes -------- Please find attached a list of events and let me know if you want me to sort any entries, I've put dates on the ones that I need details for (+cheques). Please don't rely on me to chase up entries but do let me know if you sort out events independently, just for my info' ---- Feb 22nd Molesey Vets - Details needed by 10th Feb if you want me to deal with this. ---- Feb 23rd Nottingham Trent - Details needed by Feb 12th. ---- Mar 1st Burway - Details needed by 17th Feb if you want me to deal with this. ---- Mar 8th Reading Uni' - Details needed by Feb 24th. ---- Mar 15th Women Head - Details needed by 16th Feb if you want me to deal with this. ---- Mar 22nd Kingston Head - TBA. ---- Mar 29th 8's Head - Details needed by Feb 23rd. ---- Mar 30th Vet's Head - Details needed by Feb 28th if you want me to deal with this. ---- May 3/4th Evesham Regatta. ---- See David Biddulph's 2003 Rowing Calendar

9th February 2003 Bedford Head took place today with Staines entering a Vet C Four and a Vet C Eight. In very close racing the Vet C Four came 3rd (of 3) in a time of 7 mins 23 secs and the Vet C Eight came 4th (of 4) in a time of 6 mins and 45 secs. Full results are available here.

9th February 2003 Peter Smith reports that one of our ex juniors, Alex Hamilton, has been selected to row for the University of Cambridge Lightweight eight. Rowing currently for Sidney Sussex College, the education establishment once attended by our own Roger Moulding, Alex would like to thank Staines Boat Club in general and Ted Dyos in particular for the rowing help he has received in the past. He will be rowing for Cambridge against Oxford University in the lightweight races at Henley on the 30th March 2003.

7th February 2003 Staines have entered two crews in Bedford Head that will take place on Sunday. Spectators are welcome to come and watch the races comprising the Vet C eight (no.34) at 10.45 am and the Vet C eight (no.182) at 3.30 pm.

7th February 2003 Great news! - The boards are now on yellow at both Bell Weir and Penton locks according to Steve Ballantine and Duncan Speight so rowing is on at the weekend for those crews that have permission to boat from the Captain. The lock keepers are expecting more rain so it is possible that the situation may change. Steve has cancelled the towing van in the circumstances.

6th February 2003 Adrian Tollett advises ------ I am planning a sponsored row in aid of the Mayor of Runnymede's charities, provisionally to take place on 28th June this year. This date should give me adequate daylight to row from New Haw to Old Windsor and back, a distance I estimate to be about 22 1/2 miles. I will need to row over this route beforehand (in stages) in order to check that I can get past all the locks and time myself so that I can draw up a timed itinerary. The craft is a 16 foot Alden single scull, with 2 foot beam. The name of the boat is "Billygoat". The time checks will enable me to ensure that I can complete the course in one day (and get home for the night !) and I intend publishing a timed itinerary, listing pubs, locks and rowing clubs, so that any supporters know when/where to cheer me on. There is no sense in which this is a race - as long as I have enough daylight to get back to the White Hart, New Haw half an hour before sunset. The main problems will be Town Lock and Thames Lock, Weybridge. To do this single-handedly, I will have to try boating with rigger unit and blades stowed (using a paddle), then rig the boat on the water - should be fun ! I will try this locally (New Haw/West Byfleet) with a low bank and somebody at hand, before I attempt it below Town Lock. When I carry out the trial, I do not know how long it will take me to get to Staines (or if ?), but the Thames bit will be straightforward, if a long distance. I will let you (and other clubs) know when I plan to carry out the trial. I will have plenty to 'trial' before I am ready to tackle Thames Lock and am chatting up suitable havens on the Wey. I will be in a better position to publish the row when I am more confident of the timing. Starting now gives me 4 1/2 months total preparation time - should be enough. This is an example of what happens when you hob-nob with Mayors. They sidle up to you and say, "Now then, Adrian, what are you going to do for me next year ?".

6th February 2003 News from a newsletter to be sent out by John Walton ---- Dear Member, It's been a few years since we did it, but once again we're holding this year's Dinner Dance under canvas on the Club lawn on April 26th. We're hosting the Remenham Club dinner the night before, so it's worth the bother and expense of hiring a marquee. Those who remember the dinner dances of the early 90s will recall that the effort makes for a memorable evening. Obviously we're depending on numbers to make the event a success, so we're writing to all members now, in the hope you'll order your tickets early. If you're around the club in the coming weeks you're liable to be hassled to give us a pledge that you'll come. Save yourself the hassle and make the commitment now! Why not try to make up a table? We can accommodate about 120 people, so there should be plenty room for you to bring partners, colleagues, your boss, your parents or even your (older) children! Please book early to ensure a place at this once a decade event. There's also a Boat Naming coming up soon. Our newest boat, a Sims coxed four to be called Graham Carey, will be officially named - and launched - on Sunday March 9th at 12.00 noon, followed by a Wine Tasting (with bread and cheese to make up for your missed lunch) between 1.00 and 3.00. We're holding a quiz night at the Club on March 20th, at 8.00 p.m. This will be a chance for the more mature members to show the younger rowers whose knowledge is greater - the younger committee members have thrown down the gauntlet! Note too that we're planning a sponsored row this year, provisionally on the 5th April, between Henley and Staines - more details of that nearer the event. See here to print out full letter and Dinner Dance application form

5th February 2003 Steve Ballantine advises --- A van is booked to tow boats to Putney Town RC on Saturday 8th leaving at 8:00am (Therefore any boats that need to go will have to be loaded Thursday or Friday) and returning on Sunday 16th. Towing arrangements have yet to be confirmed. All: Please keep me advised of all events you have entered so we do not breed confusion with event organisers by having several sets of information from the same club as they don't generally like it.

4th February 2003 Alex Fitgerald writes regarding the next SOBS dinner on the 11th February ------ It has come to some of our attention that the usual organiser has been failing in his responsibilities recently in not only organising a SOBS event but also turning up! In order to rectify the situation, it is about time another event took place. To this end I propose Saffron which (I am reliably informed!) is a new Indian, run by the old owners of the infamous Green Curry house, in the Anne Bolynn Hotel beside the Jade Garden on Tuesday 11 February 2003, 8.00. Please let me know by Friday so I may make the appropriate bookings if you would like to come along.

3rd February 2003 Rachel Quarrell attended the buoyancy seminar on Saturday and has published on her website a summary of what was said taken from notes made at the time. Please note that the views expressed are in each case those of the speaker.

3rd February 20033 Duncan Speight would like to remind all committee members that there will be a committee meeting at 8.00 pm tomorrow night (Tuesday).

31st January 2003 The Veteran Squad competed in the Ergo Challenge yesterday despite their rivals Auriol Kensington pulling out.The overall winner was Simon Delph with a 2k time of 6 mins 53.6 secs. Simon beat second place man John Lusty by just under 3 seconds but apparently had a 10 year age advantage. The evening finished of with an excellent bolognese prepared by Cal. Make a note in your diaries for the 13th February as AK have promised to come for a rematch.

29th January 2003 Sarah Fudge advises ----- We don't have enough people in the club wanting to row this weekend to make it feasible to hire a van so we (the girls squad) are meeting at the boat club at 9am for a run and a weights circuit if anyone would like to join us. I believe the men's squad are also land training. There was some talk of cycling and swimming.

29th January 2003 Tomorrows ergo challenge postponed. Paul Hopkins writes ----- Dear Vet Ergoers, I have just heard that AK have pulled out of Thursday's match and would like to reorganise for 13th February. No doubt this news will come as a bitter disappointment to many of you I know that your training plans meant that you would have reached peak fitness at precisely 7.30pm on Thursday. I would therefore suggest that we still meet as planned on Thursday and treat it as a rehearsal for when AK finally pluck up the courage to take us on. It will also mean that we will be even faster when we eventually next meet AK. I look forward to seeing you on Thursday from 7.00pm. John/Ian, If you could arrange to bring an ergo down it would help with the arrangements. Murray/Graham, We will still need officials to take times etc. Best regards, Paul Hopkins PS As a further incentive to come along tomorrow evening, I can tell you that a gourmet meal (pasta) will be available afterwards. If that is not enough to tempt you - the bar will also be available and a free pint for everyone who improves on their PB from last time.

27th January 2003 A public seminar is being held covering 'Swamping and Crew Shell Buoyancy' on Saturday 1st February 2003 between 4 - 6 pm at the Lawson Room, Mortlake, Anglian and Alpha BC, Chiswick. See their poster here

23rd January 2003 John Walton has suggested a 'Guess Whose Baby' page. It is now implemented as a 'Guess the Baby' page to include photographs of members when they were babies as well as their offspring. So dig out your photos and send them to me for inclusion. See the Games Page for a peek.

22nd January 2003 Steve Smith has released details of the social events planned for the near future. See the Social Calendar Page

21st January 2003 Paul Hopkins emails ---- Dear Member, Auriol Kensington are looking to avenge their defeat in the Ergo Challenge and would like a rematch. They have suggested 7.30pm Thursday 30th January at Staines Boat Club. The format would be similar to the inaugural match. Hopefully we would have at least 8 competitors and could make up various combinations: pair, four, eight etc. As always it is about improving on your previous personal best and seeing how much Christmas has taken out of you. If we are able to get any ladies interested we could extend it to a mixed Challenge. Please could you let me know if you could make it - I will need your response by the end of this week so that I could get back to AK. Please could you also pass on details to any other Veteran club members who might be interested. Duncan has agreed that the Club ergos would not be available for normal training on the 30th between 7.30pm and 9.00pm. We are hoping that food will be available afterwards - can anyone give me contact details for Terry to see if the bar could be opened. Best regards, Paul

20th January 2003 Full results for the Remenham Challenge that was raced yesterday are now available on David Biddulph's web site

20th January 2003 For those contemplating leaving boats at Dorney Lake during periods of highwater, please note that a Stampfli single was stolen from a chap called Paul Thomas when on a trailer in the car park last week, probably Friday. This follows a previous report of items being stolen from rowers cars in the same location.

20th January 2003 A report in this morning from a resident of Chertsey Lane indicates that the rain in the last 24 hours has already increased the level of the Thames. Apparently the water is again flooding the car park of Trusses Island and is threatening to break the banks at Runnymede. The Environment Agency are currently showing a status of Flood Watch from Windsor to Teddington.

20th January 2003 Roger Pailes reports that there was a strong headwind but conditions were generally good for the Remenham Challenge which took place on the Tideway yesterday. The final results are still awaited but will be found on David Biddulph's web site

19th January 2003 Happy birthday to our Secretary, Murray Litvak who was born 38 years ago today.

16th January 2003 The Environment Agency is holding a public surgery to share their understanding of the recent flood events and to answer public questions. The surgery is on Thursday 23rd January 2003 and will concentrate on flooding at Egham, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Staines and Wraysbury. It will be held at the Hythe Centre, Thorpe Road, Staines, Surrey, TW20 8BU (opposite Magna Carta School) between 9.00 am and 9.00 pm.
