HELP NEEDED FOR STAINES REGATTA- THIS IS SERIOUS

The annual regatta, in its 151st year needs your help.
We need volunteers to carry out various tasks, including stake boats, swan herding, and numerous general roles.
The SAR committee simply cannot cover all the roles themselves, so for once get off your backside and help out.
The most important job is swan herding, and bribes of beer and refreshments are available for people who put themselves up for this role.
Please e mail:- iamnotalazybod@otterproperty.co.uk

1st July 2002 Two emails have been recieved from Tim Akroyd and are reproduced here-
1.) Andy, Charlie and myself have been discussing hiring taxis to take us to and collecting us from Henley on Saturday for the yearly Pimms fest. This is apart from the taxis that Alex/Dunk have organised to take people from Woking/Guildford. Interested people for the Staines contingent at the moment include Me, Charlie, Andy, Pete + Sarah and Roul Is anybody else interested in joining this elite group ? In the past we have left the boathouse at 11ish in the morning and have been collected at Remenham at about 11.30pm...this is after the BBQ and fireworks...(which to me is the best bit of the whole week!) If you do wish to join I must have a definite answer by tomorrow evening (Gids take note)...when I understand Andy will book the cabs... Here's to a marvellous weekend. Tim.
2.) I know this is a bit late in the day but a few of us fellow SOBS thought it would be good to have a picnic on the Sunday at Henley, to sober up from the day before. The idea is to bring food and drink and encamp ourselves near the start. If you wander up the bank I am sure you will find other wandering SOBS members... Aim for midday as a time to meet and in the region of the first 400m of the course...just so that we can find each other. If anybody has a portable BBQ...so much the better, though let us all know so we know to bring some food to cook ! It is very easy to find if you haven't been there before. As you come into Henley traffic is directed to car parks near to the start of the course (cost £12-15). Park and then just wander along to the start. Simple. You don't need to let me know if you can make it this time....just turn up! It's that simple !! Look forward to seeing the normal crowd and perhaps some new and old faces too...perhaps? Go on you know it makes sense, it's Henley after all !! Only happens once a year... Tim.

31st May 2002 A report now from a 'young lady' who wishes to remain anonymous about the Oscars themed dinner dance last Saturday - Thanks go to Steve Tassell and Jo Hawkes for organizing this year's annual dinner themed as "A night at the Oscars". The evening started when Genghis Khan (Duncan) and Ming (Steve T) made a grand entrance by yelling and falling to the floor as people were tucking into their delectable pork terrine starter. The award ceremony was carried out throughout the meal, the tables themed as award winning films such as Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Graduate were filled with faces of old and new. The band played renditions of Madonna, complete with coned basque and Tina Turner complete with Silly Wig, although Zoe stole the show at this point with a full on Tina Turner impression that could have won her another Oscar! Duncan won an award for Most Spectacular crash, some might say this was not really acceptable with him being Captain of Boats even though he used the old "hangover" excuse. A plea from the Captain "please do not follow by example". We managed to raise approx. £650 from the raffle thanks to Bob Slade for donating the Mountain Bike which was won by Gideon, The Runnymede Hotel for donating Dinner for 2 which was won by Elaine and James, Swan Hill for donating Pizza Express vouchers won by Jo Hawkes and Townends Estate Agents for M & S Vouchers won by Zoe. Smiffy tried to claim the 1 hours coaching session (so that he wouldn't have to do it) but alas it promptly found its way back into the raffle and was won by someone yet to enjoy the thrills and spills of Rowing. The winners of the awards are as follows; Tom Goldswain - Most Improved Oarsman ---- Mike Piper - Club Person of the Year ---- Ted Dyos - Services to Rowing ---- Duncan Speight - Most Spectacular Crash ---- Zoe Mitchell - Moving from Novice to Senior squad in 1 season ---- Leanne, Christie, Gayle, Sally - Crew with Attitude (on the water that is!)

27th May 2002 Murray Litvak advises - VET B DOUBLE AT NATIONAL VETS Following an earlier piece regarding the possibility of running the above event, it now seems there has been sufficient interest for the event to be run. So all you vets, pair off with someone of the right age and sex and get practicing.

23rd May 2002 Captain, Clare Wood, writes - Raffle tickets are now being sold for the Dinner Dance so this is a plea to anyone not supporting the event - Please support the raffle! Leanne Johns adds - "Prizes include a Mountain Bike (kindly donated by Bob), Dinner for 2 at the Runnymede, M & S Vouchers, Microsoft Computer Games, Champagne and lots more!"

19th May 2002 Coate Water Regatta was a complete shambles reports Paul Goldswain. Apparently yesterday's regatta progressively degenerated into chaos as it ran later and later behind time. This culminated in Paul's junior sculler son Tom waiting two and a quarter hours at the start in cold conditions and finally being told to race someone that was not even in his event! Tom finally withdrew from the regatta and demanded the return of his money. This comes after the regatta withdrew the entire veteran entry due to over subscription.

16th May 2002 We are sad to report the death of Chris Roullier last Saturday 11th May 2002. The club sends its condolences to Chris's family.

16th May 2002 From a rambling email from Duncan Speight - Well it's that time again SOBS is coming around fast and we want you there! Back by public demand the venue for June SOBS will be the Anglers Retreat...By popular demand SOBS will be on 12th June (second Wednesday). This is mainly due to the bank holiday weekend. For those of you that went to the first SOBS all those years (ok months!) ago you may remember it.... it's the one with the mesmerising fish tank at the back of the restaurant. As you may have noticed Tim is not able to arrange this one as he is swanning off, sorry I mean working in the US for a few weeks, although I am told that he will be back for the event. Tim has promised that he will keep up the training for the Henley program so we have no need to worry... but knowing Tim and his business lunches..... TIM WE HAVE OUR SPIES.... WE WILL BE WATCHING YOU!! :-) We would also like to get your input as to the next SOBS do... we had thought about a picnic during Henley week... maybe on the Saturday. It would be good to get the club together as a whole for at least part of the day. Maybe we could congregate up near the start, section off an area then get down to what SOBS is all about! Some news for those of you that may not already know. Julian Blackman, a member of Staines about 6-7 years ago is getting married next weekend (25th May) to his fiancé Karen. I'd like to wish them well and hope they have a fantastic day. On the rowing front we have got off to a good start this season with wins at both Evesham and Bedford, the Novice men won on Sunday at Evesham and from what I understand the SBC mob were going wild on the bank!! The Women's S3 4+ also won in emphatic style! The Novice women were not quite so lucky, their chances were thwarted by a geographically challenged swan.... "otherwise we would have had em!" was heard a number of times after the race. The girls plan to have their revenge this weekend at Coate Water Park. Tom, Staines's psycho junior sculler is still on great form winning on Sunday and getting to the final on Saturday. The Bedford weekend also has a surprise in store, the OB's of SOBS managed a win in Elite coxed fours beating IC in the final.... the margin, two feet but hey a wins a win (well unless your IC! hehehe!!) Anyway let me know if you are able to make it to SOBS and once I have an idea of numbers I'll book the table.
15th May 2002 Our secretary, Murray Litvak advises - VETS NATIONAL CHAMPS A call has come from St Catherine's College Rowing Society asking for opposition to race a mixed double in the above event. It seems they are Vet B, but a suitable handicap could be applied. The organisers have hinted they will run the event if they can get the numbers. If there are any members that are up for that can they let the college know at stcatherinesbcl@maillist.ox.ac.uk
13th May 2002 The draw for Coate Water Regatta next Saturday should be released soon and can be viewed here.

12th May 2002 A plea from our bar officer. - Could any members, who could spare a little time for the club, please contact me as soon as possible. I really need a few people to help as bar staff on Ted's Birthday/ boat naming do on the 8th June....to ensure that a good time is had by all. Many thanks Terry Moore

A naming ceremony will be held on the same evening as Ted's Party (8th June) at 8pm as several regatta's are taking place on this day. Also Alison is in need of new members for the 100 club. £12per year and is drawn monthly. 2/3 income goes in prizes and 1/3 income is donated to the club. 6th May 2002 NEW (OLD) COURSE FOR STAINES REGATTA After using the "sprint" course for several years the Staines Amateur Regatta Committee have decided to revert to the "long" course, with its sweeping Middlesex bend to test scullers to the limit. The course will run from the gate at St Peters Church down to the normal finish. An unnamed source said " make the torture longer for them", not quite what we hoped for, but there is a feeling that this may encourage more crews to enter. The regatta takes place on Saturday 27th July.

6th May 2002 At her own request, Leanne Johns our publicity officer has elected to be the next representative in the GOO GAME. Go and play with her!!

5th May 2002 Evesham Sprint Regatta. Fine wins today for the mens Novice coxed four, womens Senior 2 coxed four and Tom Goldswain in the mens Novice sculls. See results page.

4th May 2002 Evesham regatta took place today with a large contingent of Staines members competing. With some very close racing and 4 finals contested, there were no Staines victories. Evesham Rowing Club very kindly presented Ted Dyos with a tankard to commemorate his services to rowing. Ted started his rowing career at the age of 26 and is to celebrate his 70th birthday in June. 26th April 2002 The memory of the tragic accident when three Staines oarsmen lost their lives exactly 31 years ago was rekindled last evening. At 7.00 pm, in the presence of several Staines crews and friends and families, a rowing eight comprised of friends of the deceased oarsmen threw lilies into the river in rememberance of the day that affected all their lives in 1971. Carol Choules, the wife of one of the lost men, was present with her daughter Helen. They also cast flowers in their own tribute. The minutes silence will take place at 7pm at the lock on Thursday 25th April (all boats should stay to the left side of the lock!) Any queries please contact me. clare.wood@swanhill.co.uk
22nd April 2002 From Leanne Johns - Update on the Holmes Place membership as follows: If there are 20 people interested we can join for £47 per month with free joining fee. We would all need to go to an induction evening and sign up on the same day. I would suggest Tuesday 30th April at 8.00pm. If you are interested please let me know if you can make next Tuesday. The membership can also be linked to other Holmes Places if Staines is not convenient.

Presenting a lecture by Jonathan Gornall at The Royal Geographical Society - 'Rowing the Atlantic Alone' - Chief sub-editor of The Times, Jonathan Gornall, set out as a novice rower to race across the Atlantic in a two-man team. The attempt went awry after problems, including his shipmate deciding to retire after only two weeks afloat. Left alone, Jonathan pressed on for 1,000 miles before finally giving up what had become an unequal battle with time, the elements and his own state of mind. Finally, he was obliged to watch as his boat was burnt and scuttled at sea. "I have taken a note of the co-ordinates of my final position and they will be carved on my heart". Jonathan Gornall - Wednesday 30TH January 2002 , Royal Geographical Society, 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR - Drinks 6.00pm - New Map Room, Lecture 7.00pm - Lecture Theatre, TICKETS £10 (£6 CONCESSIONS) - FOR TICKETS: Ring the credit card booking line on 020 7713 5247 or send a cheque made payable to ORBIS, with a s.a.e. to: G.
